Hoodang is David Rossiter, Sophia Hanifi, and Dave Keeney. For nearly two decades, Hoodang has been mesmerizing audiences with its unique blend of dark, driving, off-kilter alt-country music. The band writes songs, often in the first-person, of people tarnished by bad blood and bad luck who still find ways to make it through to the next town, day, marriage, con, or bottle. Blending a driving, fingerstyle rhythm guitar sound with a thrumming bass, chiming electric guitar, hammer down percussion, and soaring vocal harmonies, onstage Hoodang’s comfort zone has been a spontaneous, careening edge that plays off the moment, the mood, and the room.

With Special Guest: Tré Burt

The Majestic Theatre 4140 Woodward Ave. Detroit, Michigan 48201 United States

Presented by The Ark and AEG Live at The Majestic Theatre Margo Price has something to say but nothing to prove. In just three remarkable solo albums, the singer and songwriter has cemented herself as a force in American music and a generational talent. A deserving critical darling, she has never shied away from the sounds that move her, the pain that’s shaped her, or the topics that tick her off, like music industry double standards, the gender wage gap, or the plight of the American farmer.
Special guest, Tré Burt, opens the show.

Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis Presley decades before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet relatable music of our time. With 30 years of writing, touring, and entertaining under his belt, he shows no sign of slowing down, still breaking genre barriers and topping charts, putting a new twist on his already entertaining live show. Paul is an Ark favorite who never fails to connect with Michigan audiences, and he comes to Michigan with a new album, “Never Too Late to Call,” recorded at Sam Phillips Studi in Memphis. The album, Paul says, “features music from a man who is with the “right one and is happy to be there.”

The Whiskey Charmers is a Detroit-based band led by Carrie Shepard and Lawrence Daversa. Fans have often compared their sound to riding through the desert with the top down, or the feeling of being in some lonesome smoky bar off the side of an abandoned highway, or music from a Spaghetti Western. The Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Motor Company Fund.

Named for a tough but enduringly creative neighborhood north of downtown Cincinnati, Over the Rhine is the duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. Their ethereal sounds—dreamy, sweeping, highly literate and melancholy—have drawn comparisons to the likes of Cowboy Junkies. If you’ve never heard Over the Rhine, this is a great time to check them out—their December shows draw on their superb holiday albums, which bring renewal and a sense of the season to all.

The Majestic Theatre 4140 Woodward Ave. Detroit, Michigan 48201 United States

Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who’d ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn’t rely on amplification. Special guests, Full Cord out of Grand Haven, Michigan has been stealing the scene with an extraordinary song base that spans through originals, newgrass, traditional, covers, country, Texas swing, jazz and more.
