SCHMALTZ

Schmaltz is a modern klezmer band based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With a unique sound that hinges on craftily blended genres, their music provides a refreshing perspective on klezmer music, infusing traditional Jewish music with contemporary flavor by mixing in elements of jazz, balkan, funk, latin, and polka. Schmaltz’s debut album, “The Seltzer Man”, highlights what fans love: creative compositions, incredible improvisation, and the undeniable energy of a roaring horn section. With deep roots at the University of Michigan, Schmaltz features numerous graduates of the School of Music, Theater & Dance, including bandleader and primary composer Ryan Schildcrout (saxophone), Michael Gerace (trombone), Jacob Warren (bass), and current SMTD protégé Christopher Gerace (trumpet). Rounding out the ensemble, the rhythm section includes Ann Arbor native Jack Harris (drums), and award winning pianist, arranger, and composer Seulah Noh (piano).
