at Michigan Theater Join us for a special one of a kind show of songs, stories, and visuals. Lucinda Williams’ music has gotten her through her darkest days. It’s been that way since growing up amid family chaos in the Deep South, as she recounts in her candid new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I told You. Over the past two years, it’s been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17, 2020, at age 67. Her masterful, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To
wit, her stunning, sixteenth studio album, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever.

Can anyone who was listening to new music in the 1980s forget the songs of Michigan’s own Marshall Crenshaw? To New Wave pop they brought country and R&B elements, they brought romantic yearning, they brought the craft of a true songwriter. Says Trouser Press: “Although he was seen as a latter-day Buddy Holly at the outset, he soon proved too talented and original to be anyone but himself.” Unlike most of the acts of that era of youthful musical attitude, Marshall Crenshaw is still going strong. These days the bespectacled romantic fool of the early 1980s is all grown up, but with his fabulous songwriting chops undiminished–and even augmented a bit by jazz harmonies on occasion. “Mixing old hits like “Someday Someway” and “Whenever You’re On My Mind” with new songs, Crenshaw showed that …he still has ‘it,’” wrote Roger Friedman of Fox News after attending a recent Crenshaw show. Come by and pick up a copy of Marshall’s new expanded reissue of the album “Miracle of Science”!

A.J. Croce has been a staple of the Americana, AAA, Blues, Top 40 and other charts throughout his own stellar career, releasing ten studio albums that effortlessly transcend multiple genres and have had 20 songs chart in the Top 20 on various radio charts. However, the 50th Anniversary Celebration of You Don’t Mess Around With Jim has prompted the most affectionate look back yet at his father’s enduring legacy.  The renewed interest leading up to the celebration of the classic album (which was recorded for only $18,000 and spent an incredible 93 weeks on the charts) has inspired a special version of A.J.’s popular ‘Croce Plays Croce’ concert series.

Ever since his days with the pioneering folk-rock band Fairport Convention, Richard John Thompson OBE, the product of a working-class London family, has gone his own way. If he so desired, he could spend his time as a singer-songwriter, performing and peddling his grim, brilliant songs of love gone wrong. If he chose to, he could just play his guitar; he’s one of the best guitarists on the planet, and when it comes to making a guitar part of a song, he’s unmatched. But what really gets you about Richard Thompson is the sheer creativity of the man. Will he play a 14th-century ballad about the Battle of Agincourt? a Britney Spears cover? a rockabilly or Cajun rave-up? Named one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, Richard Thompson is the recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, and a longtime favorite among audiences in southeastern Michigan. It’s been hard to catch him lately in an intimate show, so don’t miss this chance! Come out and pick up a copy of Richard’s new book, Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice.

Celebrating 55 years on stage! A performer with an abiding love of being in front of an audience, Rush is a rib-tickling storyteller, an expressive singer, and a guitarist capable of real melancholy. He’s a durable Ark favorite, and, says the Chicago Tribune, he’s “probably the only man alive who should be allowed to sing Joni Mitchell songs.” Tom Rush is, in short, folk royalty.
