SUMMARY:Summer Sounds at The Ann Arbor Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nBRAIN PLASTICITY UKULELE COLLECTIVE AND BLUESHOUSE\n6pm \nBrain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is an open community of musicians playing at all levels and abilities. Ukes? Well\, it’s more like 30 different instruments. Plasticity? Yes! The Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective believes that by sharing music and learning how to play a new instrument\, you can: “Drop a brain bomb. Fire up the synapses. Rewire some neural pathways.” And BLUESHOUSE!\, led by veteran English bluesman Mike Brooks\, has enlivened countless stages and street parties around southeast Michigan over the last decade. Join us for a combination that will stretch your brain! \nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.

SUMMARY:Summer Sounds at The Ann Arbor Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current air quality advisory\, our artists are unable to perform this evening.  We plan to be back at the Stage on Main on Saturday evening. \n  \nWe are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nTHE RUPPLE BROTHERS\n6pm \nThe Rupple Brothers are a psychedelic folk ensemble who combine a love for family\, music\, life\, and improvisation to create a musical space unlike any other. Born unto song\, brothers Evan and Cole\, and an ever expanding cast of soul brothers\, traverse the entire spectrum of sound and space; each being proficient in multiple ways of musical strangeness\, while bringing a positive and powerful family message with their brand of wild folk. They have carved themselves out a respected place amongst the Michigan music scene\, throwing their own annual grassroots festival Handmade Music Festival in their home of Chesaning\, opening for bands like The Way Down Wanderers\, Chirp\, The Mallett Brothers Band\, Tejon Street Corner Thieves\, Good Old War\, opening up for White Denim at Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch\, winning the Review Award for “Best Duo”\, and playing top tier venues and festivals across the state. They plan to carry their stories of song to the furthest reaches of the universe. \nBOBBY ALU\n7:30pm \nIf you ask Byron Bay’s Bobby Alu what his music sounds like\, he’ll tell you how he hopes it makes you feel: like you have your favorite drink in hand\, sipping as the sun sets on a balmy evening that’s laden with the promise of adventure. In an ideal world\, he’d follow summer around the earth\, in his endless quest to nail that feeling in his songs. \nFor Bobby it’s all about letting the music decide where it takes you – creatively and physically – and following the threads of curiosity large\, small and often strange. It’s playing ukulele with old friends at the local market in exchange for a box of vegetables\, because how weird is it to improvise along to people buying bananas at 7am on a Tuesday? It’s going to Ghana with just a hunch and a WhatsApp number to track down the rhythms that lit up his heart. It’s touring the world for five years as Xavier Rudd’s percussionist\, learning how to be in service to the vibe of a room\, and how to make the jump to being an international performer in his own right. It’s honoring his Samoan heritage through sharing the stage and releasing an EP with his mother to connect with the language of her homeland. Always\, it’s about being open to discovery: if you choose music\, you choose it all.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nRabbitology\n6pm \nRabbitology is the project of Nat Timmerman—a world that was pulled from her odd-running mind. A little land of the harebrained and burrowing. Simply follow the three-legged rabbit prints until you’re knee deep in this world’s eclectic soundscapes\, and here you will discover a collection of memoirs turned into fantastical sonic short stories. Stay as long as you like. Make this world your home too. It’s a little unusual in here\, but that’s life! \nJoe & The Ruckus\n7:30pm \nThe Ruckus is a collective with the goal of recontextualizing classic funk and soul music within our 21st century world. They formed during the pandemic and emerged from lock-down as changed people in search of new live music experiences from those typically seen pre-pandemic. The Ruckus rose to and surpassed that expectation\, providing electrifying live concerts with repertoire ranging from the father of funk\, James Brown\, to the king of soul\, Stevie Wonder\, and beyond into more modern artists and have now expanded from their hometown to NYC\, Chicago and Detroit.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year!\n\nDuPont Phillips\n6pm \nSoutheast Michigan favorites Chris DuPont and Kylee Phillips met a decade ago at a Tree Town Sound radio appearance for Ann Arbor’s 107.1 and have been fans of each other’s writing ever since. In the summer of 2021\, after countless path crossings\, Chris and Kylee finally learned each other’s material and discovered an incredible vocal blend and stage synergy. They each released solo EPs in the fall of 2023 and their first duo EP – “Big Sky Sessions” – in April 2024. \nNathan Graham\n7:30pm \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, Nathan Graham meshes South Side Blues with Nashville Americana\, beginning his career backing blues singers at famous haunts like Buddy Guy’s Legends and Kingston Mines. He spent a decade as a guitar-for-hire before picking up a mic to tell his own stories on the stage.  \nSoulful and steady\, Graham’s music offers a raw introspective of the human condition that’s both painful and comforting. His guitar conveys heartbreak\, lyrics tell stories of regret\, but his rich vocal delivery offers the remedy. \nHaving brought his songs on international tours with both major label and indie acts\, Graham is challenging the notion of what it means to be a singer-songwriter. He’s driving inclusivity within the genre\, and he hopes to evoke a sense of understanding in the process. \n“I’m writing about universal experiences\,” he says. “I’m writing music to connect my story to yours\, show you all that we have in common\, and maybe help both of us feel less alone.”

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \n6:00 Jordan Hamilton \nCellist and vocalist Jordan Hamilton is a mix of mastery and maverick musicality; hip-hop influenced\, rhythmically layered\, melodically robust. Driven by diversity\, drawn to the cello’s tone\, cosmic strings calling souls home. A different kind of symphony\, hopeful enough to grow our empathy\, “part political activism\, part hopefulness\, part performance art\, part soundscapes\, and all entirely mesmerizing.” (John Sinkevics\, Local Spins) Emotional energy crafted from integrity\, immaterial and immortal\, experienced at the speed of sound\, with a bit of bounce\, groove by the ounce\, and all the jump you’ll need to move. \n7:30 Tony Furtado \nVery few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \n6:00 Phillip-Michael Scales \nAs a kid\, Phillip-Michael Scales didn’t understand what it meant that his aunt’s close friend\, the guitar player who called him “Nephew” and he called “Uncle B\,” was B.B. King. Once Phillip-Michael began guitar lessons\, the significance became so clear that he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead\, he fell in love with songwriting when an English teacher told him “A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone.” When his Uncle B passed away\, Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music as a way to honor him. “These days I’m finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics\, my identity\, and the idea of Legacy.” The result is a sound he calls “Dive Bar Soul” which takes a bit of indie rock storytelling and couples it with the passion of the blues. \n7:30 Joe and The Ruckus \nThe Ruckus is a collective with the goal of recontextualizing classic funk and soul music within our 21st century world.
