Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nWhether playing acoustic\, mandolin\, national steel\, or screaming electric guitar\, Davy Knowles has an unmistakable style.  Since bursting on to the scene with his band Back Door Slam’s critically acclaimed album ‘Roll Away’ in 2007 (“I heard the spirit of Jimi Hendrix” Patrick McDonald – Seattle Times)\,  Davy’s star has only risen. His sophomore release ‘Coming Up For Air’ was produced by the legendary Peter Frampton (“Davy already has a recognizable style. He’s definitely the gunslinger guitarist of the 21st century\,’’- Peter Frampton). \nKnowles has several top-5 Billboard Blues charting albums under his belt\, high profile TV appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS Good Morning America among others)\, and has been praised with high accolades from heroes and press alike – but it’s not just the music industry who has taken note. Knowles was also the very first artist in history to perform live to the International Space Station directly from mission control in Houston TX\, and has had his music taken to the Space Station by two astronauts\, Nicole Stott and Ron Garan\, on their missions orbiting Earth.  \nNever one to be satisfied or to sit still\, Knowles has explored multiple genres and styles\, from the hard-hitting 70’s classic rock influenced album ‘Three Miles From Avalon’\, to the haunting acoustic delta blues of ‘1932’\, and the sweet\, soul-searching folk of 2023’s ‘If I Should Wander’.  \nWhether spending an evening onstage armed with just an acoustic guitar\, or wielding his well worn and trusty Telecaster while fronting his blues/rock trio – and at any point in between the two – Davy Knowles is a versatile and formidable songwriter and musician.

When Covid sidelined his touring this past year\, he started laying concrete to help support his baby mama and his kid. That’s fuckin’ real. When Joe and his band\, the Honeybears\, popped onto the national stage over a decade ago\, many critics embraced him but still\, there were some that maintained that they hadn’t paid their dues. Joe’s still here. Still going. Still cashing checks and snapping necks. The dues of hard work; the delirious heights of the industry as well as the disappointments and low hanging fruit. Through this all\, Joe’s only honed his mastery over gut bucket blues guitar and his true voice. It’s a vital and distinctly American voice that never anticipated the attention he wound up receiving\, never went looking for it either. It just started happening. The garage\, the blues\, the propulsive and synergistic live performances that inhabit the spaces of James Brown\, Lightnin’ Hopkins\, and the MC5…those things happened naturally from the very beginning and could only be accurately communicated in the live experience\, not a press release or a slick brand campaign. Sharon Jones\, Charles Bradley\, Cedric Burnside and Lightnin Malcolm\, The Dirtbombs\, Detroit Cobras\, the Strange Boys; these are some of the artists that Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears shared countless bills with; almost a roll call of the most influential soul and garage bands of the last twenty five years. Has the soul blues garage explosion from that era been commodified or worked into the overall template of pop rock? Sure. But the ground floor was a vital space for people that like guitars and grease and at this point Black Joe Lewis is one of the last standing that was there. Last of a dying breed. Or maybe a missing link. Does this make him a throwback? A throwback to a throwback? It’d be tempting and easy for Joe to go along with that but nah\, we don’t think so. We know that Joe Lewis is genuinely doing his thing and that he’d do it regardless of what’s coming down the pipe. A stone cold original and a veteran at that. If you like whistling in your music and some floppy hat\, quaky kneed dudes cloyingly singing at you\, then you might not “get it” but whatever…there are enough intrepid\, degenerate weirdos that do. Those are the folks Joe cares about. Not the glad handing set. Not the fair-weather friend set getting down with the flavor of the month. Like the title of his last album says\, “the difference between me and you” is Joe defining for himself that there’s the belabored wannabes and then there’s dudes that actually “HAVE the blues”…whatever the hell THAT is! Joe’s concrete pouring boss is gonna miss him.  \n  \nYpsilanti’s own James Bourland & The Staches open the show with a performance of raw emotion and soul. Led by the charismatic frontman James Bourland\, whose gritty vocals and masterful guitar riffs set the stage on fire. Accompanied by an allstar band of local talent\, Marley Turner on Harmonica\, Dylan Turner on Keys\, Skott Schoonover on Bass\, and Jordan Otto on Drums\, this blues ensemble captures the essence of the genre’s rich history while adding their own modern twist.

Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nMark Jewett is an insightful Michigan native storyteller who writes songs that push the boundaries of Americana into an uncommon blend of folk\, rock\, blues\, and prog rock. In them\, listeners will hear and feel honesty\, gratitude\, and thoughtful introspection\, with doses of humor and drama to vary the pace. His songs betray the effort he makes to find just the right words\, taking cues from the likes of Randy Newman\, John Prine\, and Nick Lowe. \nMark assembled the band known as The Strategic Advisors to record his 2nd full length album\, “The Lucky One\,” released in 2021. The band is comprised of some of SE Michigan’s finest musicians\, including Billy Harrington (drums & vocals)\, Michael Harrington (pedal steel\, electric & acoustic guitars)\, Ken Pesick (bass)\, Amy Petty (vocals & guitar) and Dale Grisa (keyboards). The band is extremely versatile and sonically\, they make Mark’s tunes span the wide space between classic folk and epic soundscapes you might expect to hear from Pink Floyd. Somehow\, it all fits together to provide an attention grabbing extravaganza. \nDetroit-based indie-folk band Jackamo opens. Led by sisters Alison and Tessa Wiercioch (vocals) and Jimmy Showers (guitar)\, and known for their blood harmonies\, acoustic textures\, and lyric-driven storytelling\, their sound is intimate\, nostalgic\, and always evolving.

It might be more like a lament. It might be more melancholy. But I’m going to tell you: the blues is in there.” \nIf anyone knows where to find the blues\, it’s Taj. A brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind\, he has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. Then\, as he traced origins to the American South\, the Caribbean\, Africa\, and elsewhere\, he created entirely new sounds\, over and over again. As a result\, he’s not only a god to rock-and-roll icons such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones\, but also a hero to ambitious artists toiling in obscurity who are determined to combine sounds that have heretofore been ostracized from one another. No one is as simultaneously traditional and avant-garde.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nSCHMALTZ\n6pm \nSchmaltz is a modern klezmer band based in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. With a unique sound that hinges on craftily blended genres\, their music provides a refreshing perspective on klezmer music\, infusing traditional Jewish music with contemporary flavor by mixing in elements of jazz\, balkan\, funk\, latin\, and polka. Schmaltz’s debut album\, “The Seltzer Man”\, highlights what fans love: creative compositions\, incredible improvisation\, and the undeniable energy of a roaring horn section. With deep roots at the University of Michigan\, Schmaltz features numerous graduates of the School of Music\, Theater & Dance\, including bandleader and primary composer Ryan Schildcrout (saxophone)\, Michael Gerace (trombone)\, Jacob Warren (bass)\, and current SMTD protégé Christopher Gerace (trumpet). Rounding out the ensemble\, the rhythm section includes Ann Arbor native Jack Harris (drums)\, and award winning pianist\, arranger\, and composer Seulah Noh (piano). \nJILL JACK BAND\n7:30pm \nJill Jack’s decades-spanning career has carried her across the globe\, captivating audiences both as a solo artist and with her band. She has shared stages with iconic performers like Bob Seger and Loretta Lynn\, cementing her place in the Americana music scene. Blending folk\, rock\, country\, and blues\, her sound is as dynamic as it is authentic—driven by vivid storytelling\, quick-witted humor\, and deeply heartfelt performances. \nWith an impressive catalog of 12 albums and 51 Detroit Music Awards\, Jack’s artistry extends beyond the stage. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nBRAIN PLASTICITY UKULELE COLLECTIVE AND BLUESHOUSE\n6pm \nBrain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is an open community of musicians playing at all levels and abilities. Ukes? Well\, it’s more like 30 different instruments. Plasticity? Yes! The Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective believes that by sharing music and learning how to play a new instrument\, you can: “Drop a brain bomb. Fire up the synapses. Rewire some neural pathways.” And BLUESHOUSE!\, led by veteran English bluesman Mike Brooks\, has enlivened countless stages and street parties around southeast Michigan over the last decade. Join us for a combination that will stretch your brain! \nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.

The act is composed of New Zealander Nick Stone and Coloradan Dani Cichon\, and together the two multi-instrumentalists and songwriters combine ethereal harmonies\, poetic lyricism\, percussive finger-style guitar\, bluesy resonator\, suitcase stomp\, and driving mandolin into a genre-bending sound described by American Songwriter as “impeccable”. South for Winter has received nominations such as Finalist for “Best Group/Duo” in the 2023 International Acoustic Music Awards and Semi-Finalist in the 2023 and 2022 International Songwriting Competition. Their music has been praised by sites such as American Songwriter (“laden with delicate harmonies\, intricate guitar-work\, and earthy vocals… impeccable sound”)\, No Depression (“must-see artist”)\, and AmericanaUK (“an ethereal\, dreamy\, journey…a journey well-worth taking”).

DESCRIPTION:Bluegrass heroes Stillhouse Junkies are on the forefront of breaking through the genre with their free-flowing musical interplay that weaves roots\, classical\, texas-swing and blues into a high-energy\, intricately composed yet expansively improvised tapestry of sound.   \nThe trio\, Fred Kosak (guitar\, mandolin)\, Alissa Wolf (fiddle)\, Jeanette Adams (bass) are based in the wilderness town of Durango\, Colorado.  Formed in 2017\, the band is already 3 albums deep with singles constantly streaming out including a collaboration with Tim O’Brien. Their prolific songwriting\, 3-part harmonies and outrageous instrumentals brought them the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award “Momentum Band of the Year” in 2021. \nStillhouse Junkies are quickly becoming a household name as they tour incessantly across the United States.  They have played beloved festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival\, Rockygrass\, Merle Fest\, and ROMP gaining new fans every day.  Their busy schedule has seen them supporting Willie Carlisle\, The Lil Smokies and Asleep at the Wheel. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy.
