Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThe musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser\, “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling”\, and brilliant Californian cellist Natalie Haas spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. Over the last 20 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world\, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing\, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music. \nFraser has a concert and recording career spanning over 30 years\, with a long list of awards\, accolades\, radio and television credits\, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans\, Titanic\, etc.). In 2011\, he was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. Haas\, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music\, is one of the most sought after cellists in traditional music today. She has performed and recorded with a who’s who of the fiddle world including Mark O’Connor\, Natalie MacMaster\, Irish supergroups Solas and Altan\, Liz Carroll\, Dirk Powell\, Brittany Haas\, Darol Anger\, Jeremy Kittel\, Hanneke Cassel\, Laura Cortese\, and many more. \nThis seemingly unlikely pairing of fiddle and cello is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser. His search eventually led him to find a cellist who could help return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music\, where it stood for hundreds of years before being relegated to the orchestra. The duo’s debut recording\, Fire & Grace\, won the coveted the Scots Trad Music “Album of the Year” award\, the Scottish equivalent of a Grammy. Since its release\, the two have gone on to record five more critically acclaimed albums that blend a profound understanding of the Scottish tradition with cutting-edge string explorations. In additional to performing\, they both have motivated generations of string players through their teaching at fiddle camps across the globe. \nPhoto credit: Irene Young

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nOne of Canada’s finest artists\, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics\, spirituality\, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk\, jazz\, rock\, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala\, Mali\, Mozambique\, and Nepal\, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders. “My job\,” he explains\, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.” \nThat scratching and pulling has earned Cockburn high praise as an exceptional songwriter and a revered guitarist. His songs of romance\, protest\, and spiritual discovery are among the best to have emerged from Canada over the last 50 years. His guitar playing\, both acoustic and electric\, has placed him in the company of the world’s top instrumentalists. And he remains deeply respected for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt\, working for organizations such as Oxfam\, Amnesty International\, Doctors Without Borders\, and Friends of the Earth. \nThroughout his career\, Cockburn has deftly captured the joy\, pain\, fear\, and faith of human experience in song. Whether singing about retreating to the country or going up against chaos\, tackling imperialist lies or embracing ecclesiastical truths\, he has always expressed a tough yet hopeful stance: to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight. “We can’t settle for things as they are\,” he once warned. “If you don’t tackle the problems\, they’re going to get worse.” \nFor his many achievements\, the Ottawa-born artist has been honoured with 13 Juno Awards\, an induction into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame\, as well as the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award\, and has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. But he never rests on his laurels. “I’d rather think about what I’m going to do next\,” says Cockburn. “My models for graceful aging are guys like John Lee Hooker and Mississippi John Hurt\, who never stop working till they drop\, as I fully expect to be doing\, and just getting better as musicians and as human beings.” \nHis commitment to growth has made Bruce Cockburn both an exemplary citizen and a legendary artist whose prized songbook will be celebrated for many years to come.

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nAfter 16 years\, eight albums\, and hundreds of shows\, Joshua Radin still treats music as an antidote to any ailment. The LA-based singer/songwriter finds healing in between waves of acoustic eloquence and dyed-in-the-wool Americana storytelling. On his ninth album The Ghost And The Wall [Nettwerk]\, the troubadour continues a cycle of catharsis meant to be shared among any and all receptive hearts. \nSince 2004\, he’s affected countless listeners with palpable transparency\, selling over 1 million records\, generating 1 billion+ streams\, and garnering a gold plaque for single “I’d Rather Be With You.” Landing north of 150 film\, television\, and commercial syncs\, his voice courses throughout the zeitgeist. Among many highlights\, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden personally handpicked “Brand New Day” for a commercial in support of the troops. In addition to memorable performances on Ellen\, The Tonight Show\, Jimmy Kimmel Live!\, Conan\, and Today Show\, he famously serenaded avowed super fan Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi during their wedding. Beyond sold out headline shows on four continents\, he’s performed alongside Ed Sheeran\, Sara Bareilles\, Ingrid Michaelson\, Sheryl Crow\, Tori Amos\, Imogen Heap\, and more. He also remains a committed philanthropist\, supporting charities like Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA)\, among others. \nThe Ghost And The Wall was produced entirely remotely by Jonathan Wilson [Father John Misty\, Conor Oberst\, Dawes}. \nFolk-rock band Tow’rs opens.

Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nDebuting in the U.S. in 2012\, We Banjo 3 has since emerged as fast-rising touring darlings in the country that two of the members now call home. The Galway\, Ireland\, and Nashville-based quartet––comprised of two sets of brothers\, Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley––continually push musical boundaries while maintaining an unwavering devotion to the essential audience experience. WB3seamlessly converge the shared and varied traditions of Americana\, Bluegrass\, and Celtic music with popsensible songcraft to create a truly unique and gratifying signature sound. Brilliantly commanded instruments––banjo\, fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar\, and percussion––effortlessly elevate lead singer David Howley’s propulsive voice. Live on stage\, their songs carry the listener along until\, at the perfect moment\, the band crescendos into catchy choruses with pitch perfect harmonies. We Banjo 3 deliver their music with such palpable rapport\, stunning precision\, and infectious energy\, it’s impossible to pigeonhole what kind of listener might suddenly consider themselves a WB3 fan. With recent stunning performances at such broad ranging festivals Merlefest\, BottleRock\, Summercamp\, ROMP\, Wintergrass and others\, enthusiasts of almost every genre of music are taking notice. Actor/comedian and musician Steve Martin says of the band\, “We Banjo 3…are making waves…here in America. They are playing the banjo in a style that I didn’t even know could be played like that.” Northwest Cultural Blog said\, “There are few adjectives left to describe the authenticity and the electrifying experience you get when you first see/hear We Banjo 3 live on stage…It’s the incorporation of each and every one of its members\, their individual charisma\, their energy\, their passion and their very soul\, that makes them one of the greatest live musical acts the world has to offer today.” \nWe Banjo 3 released their 6th CD\, Roots To Rise Live\, in July of 2019 in conjunction of the band’s summer and fall 2019 U.S. tours. Recorded at The Ark in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, the CD features a mix of original material\, traditional compositions\, select cover songs\, and two previously unreleased tunes. The CD debuted at the beginning of August at # 1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums Chart spending 4 weeks in the peak position. The band’s 2018 studio recording\, Haven\, spent 3 weeks at # 1 on that chart\, marking the first time an Irish band held the # 1 position on this chart. When Haven re-entered the chart at # 5 in August 2019\, joining Roots To Rise Live at the #1 position\, WB3 made history again as the only Irish band to hold two top-5 chart positions simultaneously. Of Roots To Rise Live\, Songlines Magazine reviewed “…this album by Celtgrass pioneers We Banjo 3 scorches its way through a rollercoaster set colliding their native Galway heritage with liberal helpings of blistering bluegrass and a telling nod to pop music.” \nWe Banjo 3 is committed to giving back to the community\, and raising awareness around the issue of mental health is a cause that is dear to their hearts. Toward this effort\, We Banjo 3 donate $2.00 for every t-shirt and CD sold on their U.S. tours to organizations that work to provide mental health resources. In 2019\, WB3 raised $7500.00 for Mental Health America\, the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the mental health of all Americans. For 2020\, We Banjo 3 is pleased to partner with start-up not-for-profit Backline. Backline works to support the mental health of music industry professionals and their families by providing streamlined access to mental health and wellness services and educational resources specific to the work and lifestyle of the music industry community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nSinger-songwriter Martin Sexton is like an ultra-active antenna\, adventuring through the static to grab a clear signal. When he dials in on one station\, he then quickly shifts to the next one. This everchanging attention span drives his family crazy\, but it’s ingrained in Martin\, dating back to his childhood when he would tear through television primetime programming. \nThis ability to hone in on little defining moments suits Martin as a songwriter as evident by his latest EP\, 2020 Vision. This is Martin’s first release in 6 years\, and it is a poetically emotive and an elegantly evocative pandemic scrapbook. “In one song\, I’m building a treehouse with my son. In another song\, I’m crossing America and seeing the beauty in people rising through adversity and loving each other\,” Martin details. \nUp next\, the road is calling Martin as tour dates are being booked in this post-vaccine chapter. 2020 Vision will always have its lessons and remain in Martin’s sight\, even as the miles out on the road put pandemic life in the rearview mirror. One of those lessons is the power of togetherness. Martin says: “My mission statement for the past 15 years has been unity through music\, and I am committed to sharing peace and harmony through my songs.” \nOpener Chris Trapper is a storyteller. With his soulful\, honeyed tenor\, sly humor and an uncanny knack for melody\, Chris has traveled the world over\, performing to a dedicated and ever growing fan base with nothing but his guitar and his songs.

As he put hurts we didn’t even realize we had or shared into his songs\, we sang along. And we felt better. But there has always been far more to Moreland than sad songs. Today\, his earthbound poetry remains potent\, but in addition to his world-weary candor\, Moreland’s music smolders with gentle wisdom\, flashes of wit and joy\, and compassion. And once again\, as we listen\, we feel better. Austin-based songwriter Will Johnson (Centro-matic) opens.

DESCRIPTION:This show has been cancelled. Purchases made will be automatically refunded by MUTO. Contact MUTO at muto-tix@umich.edu with questions. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThink of a carnival\, or indeed a carny\, and it’s very likely that images of bearded ladies\, mustachioed strongmen\, trapeze artists\, wolf boys\, monkey mermaids and the like will come flooding into your mind. Add a healthy dash of punk rock and oldie timey music\, and you have Black Jake & the Carnies. \nThese men create sounds that make Tod Browning’s Freaks look positively conventional. The glorious dichotomy is that the tunes are catchy enough to be disconcertingly accessible. You are\, indeed\, one of us. \n“The idea for Black Jake and the Carnies came to Jake in 1999\, when he had an ecstatic vision of a band playing fast-paced music on traditional instruments\, full of entertaining gimmicks\, props\, and crowd interaction\,” says the band. “The original incarnation of the band started in 2002\, and played one disastrous Halloween Show at Trinity House Theater before breaking up.  Jake kept the vision alive and kept writing songs over the next four years until one day in 2006 he decided to get a band back together.  A few guys who knew some guys down the street eventually turned into a new Black Jake & the Carnies overnight.” \nThe band\, comprised of Black Jake (banjo\, vocals\, kick drum\, tambourine\, songwriting)\, Kyle Kipp (guitar\, backing vocals)\, Wally Jarvis (hand percussion\, accordion\, harmonica\, backing vocals)\, Ozzie Andrews (bass)\, and Gary Ritter (Fiddle\, Mandolin\, backing vocals)\, are five hard-working men from Southeast Michigan who wallow in the imagery of sideshows and carnivals. “When you grow up in a small town\, you have hair down your back and everyone’s a redneck\, you get called a freak a lot\,” Jake told Detroit’s Metro Times in 2011. “So I get attracted to the outcasts\, the freaks\, being somebody who’s on display.” \nHe’s not wrong. When Black Jake & the Carnies played a prison show in Belgium as part of the Belgium/Netherlands/Germany tour in 2011\, the touring company said that they were the only band they’d ever seen who got the prisoners to jump up out of their seats and dance. And everybody knows how hard convicts are to please. \nPhoto Credit: Philamonjaro

The program celebrates diversity in the art of story\, and includes true personal stories\, tall tales\, folk tales\, a story from literature\, and a couple of songs from the folk tradition. This program not only entertains\, it also gives a window into the reason that the oral tradition of storytelling is the most enduring adventure in human history. \nStorytellers include four members of the Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild – Steve Daut\, MC\, Lorelle Otis\, Jane Fink\, and Rich Swanson. In addition\, we are delighted to welcome Barbara Schutzgruber from the Lansing Storytellers\, and Larry Castleberry from the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers as featured storytellers tonight. \nAlso available as a Virtual concert on our Facebook Live page and YouTube channel. But those able are wont to be luminous\, struggle having landed their hearts on the outside of their bodies: a swinging lantern within that aforementioned dim room – where stories are unraveled\, thus to be reconstructed … purposefully reanimated. \nIt was also within such a room that Allison Russell – singer\, songwriter\, poet\, and activist – bore witness to herself in descent. But the abused child she was played mother to the brave woman and fierce artist she would become – surviving being one of only two options\, and not the most likely. \nBlessed be. \nAllison’s new album\, Outside Child – that draws water from the dark well of a violent past — is her first solo offering\, she also being a pivotal voice in two bands: Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters. And telling her own story sounds now to have made her free – not from it all\, but free within it: to reframe and reclaim her identity and its singular authority. \nThe songs themselves – though iron-hard in their concerns – are exultant: exercising haunted dream like clean bedsheets snapped and hung out into broad daylight\, and with the romantic poet’s lust for living and audacity of endurance. \nNina Simone comes to mind\, as well Edith Piaf: two shamanistic practitioners who turned their faces into the blade of storm and roared back dignity and hope. \nThis music\, no less – no less – is a triumph: a courageous work – burnished and bright; unspeakably beautiful as she sings the unspeakable. \nAbove all\, it is an act of remarkable generosity: a cathartic\, soulful\, buoyant and redeeming gift to us all and\, one must believe\, to herself as well. \n-Joe Henry\, Bath\, Maine

It all comes together to make this 5-piece unit a favorite of the festival circuit (Milwaukee Irish Festival & Dublin Irish Festival among many others\,) the morning show circuit (Live with Regis and Kelly and A&E’s Breakfast With The Arts) and the 10s of thousands of fans\, the self-described “Haggis Heads\,” who have purchased their records\, donated more than $150\,000 to finance 3 albums\, and made their most recent effort debut at #9 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart. It should be of no surprise then that Enter The Haggis has become a critical favorite\, receiving praise from The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post and Canada’s Globe and Mail.

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nWhen you hear Marielle Kraft’s music or experience her candid live shows\, you feel as though you already know her. The Nashville-based indie pop singer/songwriter\, originally from Rhode Island\, displays craftsmanship beyond her years\, evident through her use of salient detail\, raw emotion\, and poignant word choice to describe moments “exactly as they feel.” \nIn spring 2018\, she was crowned Grand Champion of the Mid-Atlantic Singer-Songwriter Competition\, and the following June she delivered a Tedx Talk at Firefly 2018\, discussing the importance of honesty rooted in her songwriting process. \nMarielle Kraft’s debut studio EP\, “The Deep End” officially released on July 12th\, 2019\, is described by The Music Mermaid as “song after song of mini pop addictions.” In February 2020\, Marielle Kraft co-released an “anthemic” and “heart-filled” single with Joshua Howard entitled “In It Together”\, which quickly gained traction across platforms. \nHer October 23rd single\, “Portland\,” breathtakingly captures the moment we find ourselves in\, and speaks volumes of the young artist’s songwriting abilities. \nMarielle Kraft has shared stages with names as big as Jon McLaughlin\, Ava Max\, and Betty Who. Her “winning personality\,” “genuine connection\,” and “gift for story telling” on stage have fueled the ever-growing crowds at each of her shows\, with no signs of slowing down. \nWithout missing a beat\, Marielle Kraft released back to back singles to kick off 2021\, both of which found major traction on Tiktok before becoming fully studio produced releases. “Everyone But Me” (February 19th) and “We Were Never Friends” (March 24th) feature a more developed sound than seen from Marielle before\, and have cultivated her biggest streaming debuts to date. With more new releases on the way\, Kraft is on track for an even bigger 2021. \nSince leaving her full-time teaching career to pursue a life committed to creating music\, Marielle Kraft has promise to follow suit to artists like Julia Michaels and Maisie Peters as the young songwriter makes a growing impact in the indie pop scene. \nThis is a FREE show. Nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers.

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHailed by the New York Times as “one of the great soul interpreters of her generation”\, Bettye LaVette is a vocalist who can take any type of song and make it completely her own. To quote the late\, great George Jones\, “Bettye is truly a singer’s singer”. \nHer career began in 1962\, at the age of 16\, in Detroit\, Michigan. Her first single “My Man – He’s a Loving Man”\, was released on Atlantic Records. This led to tours with headliners such as Ben E. King\, Clyde McPhatter and then up-and-comer\, Otis Redding. She recorded for numerous major labels\, including Atco\, Epic\, and Motown\, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. She also worked alongside Charles “Honi” Coles and Cab Calloway in the touring company of the Toni Award winning musical\, Bubbling Brown Sugar. \nThe 2000’s started what she calls her “Fifth Career”. Her CD\, A Woman Like Me\, won the W.C. Handy Award in 2004 for Comeback Blues Album of the Year. She was also given a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation\, was inducted into the Detroit Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame\, given an Unsung Award by the National R&B Society\, and inducted into The Blues Hall of Fame by the Blues Foundation. She has received Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist. Since 2002\, she has released 8 albums\, 5 of which have received Grammy nominations. \nIn 2017\, she signed with Verve Records and has since recorded 2 albums\, both of which were produced by Steve Jordan\, were critically acclaimed\, and received Grammy nominations. The first was Things Have Changed\, an album consisting of all Bob Dylan songs. Her latest\, Blackbirds\, is Bettye’s homage to the Black female singers of the 1950s who came before her. \nFans\, critics and artists have nothing but high praise for her live show and her vocal prowess. Now\, at 75 years old and in her 59th year in show business\, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today.

He’s equally—and tremendously on all counts—gifted as a singer\, writer\, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: “Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you’re ever likely to hear … utterly original … it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated … his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener’s brain.” Peter grew up in Milwaukee\, made his debut on the streets of Dublin\, and moved to Boston\, performing in subways and finally clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco\, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song “Take Down Your Flag\,” about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston\, South Carolina. “I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through\, and I think that young man is right as rain\,” Peter says. “I’m doing my best.” Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album\, “There Is Another World.” \nThe sound of SistaStrings can’t be described in one word. This Milwaukee-based sister duo combines their classical background with R&B and a touch of gospel influence that culminates in a “vibey\, lush sound.” With thick string harmonies between violin and cello and soulful voices\, SistaStrings takes you on a journey.

A battle with clinical anxiety disorder and prescription drug abuse\, which came to a head in 2019\, had dimmed the light within. The man who once seemed to ooze spontaneity was now creatively adrift\, stumbling along in the fog. \nIn December\, he entered a program and\, for the first time in a long time\, a path toward healing began to emerge. He began to see that inner peace was possible\, even with the world outside raging. \nA few months later\, in February\, a tornado came and decimated East Nashville\, his adopted hometown. Covid-19 took root just days later\, changing lives forever. In the early days of his recovery\, a different reality was beginning to take shape\, both within and without. New worlds were being born; old worlds were dying. \nKnowing he was struggling to write songs and make sense of it all\, Slim was finally able to flesh out a throwaway ditty one afternoon. His close friend Mike then suggested he try penning a song a day. Slim didn’t like the idea\, but he gave it a shot. \nTo his surprise\, the songs came. In a flurry of stream-of-consciousness writing\, the new tunes tumbled out\, one after another\, like little starbursts of joy\, gifts from the gods you might say. Slim was tuning out the noise and finding beauty in the madness of a world coming undone. Over the course of a couple of months from March to May\, Slim penned more than twenty that were certified keepers. Out of this bumper crop came the songs that make up his new album\, Strawberry Mansion\, which is being released this winter on Dualtone Records. \n“I wasn’t sitting on the songs and I wasn’t overthinking them\,” Slim says of the writing process of those months. “Something cracked open with the slowing down and the stillness of quarantine. \nAfter finishing a song\, whether he liked the tune or not\, he’d call Mike\, a videographer\, and they’d record it and post it to Instagram. It was a form of therapy\, he now realizes. “There was nothing precious about the process and it was a bonding thing between me and Mike as much as anything else\,” Slim says. “It also gave me a release and maybe some potential form of healing\, and was an opportunity to not always listen to the shitty thoughts in my head. I wasn’t ever thinking that I was writing songs for a new record.” \nPrior to this creative outburst\, Slim’s anxiety had grown so acute there were times when he actually feared picking up his guitar and trying to write. With the help of therapy and friends\, he was now learning to confront his demons rather than run from them. So\, in the midst of a panic attack one day\, he picked up his guitar and the song “Panic Attack” was born. It’s a raw\, off-the-cuff number that rises above the dark subject matter with spirit\, irony and humor. “I called a healthcare professional/ Wanna speak to someone confidentially/ Don’t know just how I’m feelin’/ But I’m feelin’ feelings exponentially\,” he sings. \nAlbum-opener “Mighty Soul” details a world beset by Biblical-grade plagues (coronavirus\, the Nashville tornado) and government malfunction. It ultimately calls for healing through community and the recognition that we can all make a difference. It functions as the album’s spiritual center\, a secular gospel number for all mankind. \n“Morning Prayer” is inspired by the songwriter’s effort to pray for the first time in his life. “It’s not in the key of any one religion\,” Slim says of the number. “For this\, I’m grateful that my guitar was unknowingly yet appropriately out of tune. It’s a song to help me practice compassion\, surrender\, connection to nature\, the spirits and beyond.” \nThe second part of “Morning Prayer” is one of the most affecting moments on Strawberry Mansion\, with the singer reaching out and offering prayers for his loved ones who are struggling\, for all of humanity\, really. “For my friends who suffer/ For my mother\, father and brother/ For a world down on its knees/ I pray for thee\,” he sings with great poignancy. \nThe road to Strawberry Mansion\, which was recorded at Daylight Sound in Nashville with longtime compadres Paul DeFigilia (Avett Brothers) and Mat Davidson (Twain)\, began in 2019 with Slim’s decision to get sober. Even though the singer-songwriter kicked alcohol years ago\, the insidious monster of addiction had crept back into his life in different guises. The last straw came during a road trip with a friend\, who\, at the end of the journey\, let it be known that the man he knew and loved was no longer recognizable. So Slim called his manager and loved ones and soon checked into a program. That experience and his ongoing recovery program have given him a framework for grappling with the personal demons that have always skulked in the shadows\, and helped him find light in the void. “It’s important for me to talk honestly about these things\, because I feel it gives me strength\, and it might help others along the way.” he says. \nStrawberry Mansion is the singer-songwriter’s seventh full-length album. He released his first record\, Electric Love Letter\, back in 2004. Since then he has graced the stages of Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, Newport Folk Festival\, and the Conan O’Brien show\, winning fans over with his heart-on-a-sleeve sincerity and rousing live shows. \nBorn Sean Scolnick in 1980\, Slim took part of his artistic moniker from his hometown of Langhorne\, Pennsylvania\, a place he’s still very much connected to despite making his home in Nashville. Since the advent of Covid-19\, he has been traveling back to PA once a month to see his mother and grandmother\, and\, like many Americans\, finding strength in his origins and family bonds. The title Strawberry Mansion refers to the neighborhood in Philadelphia where both of his grandfathers grew up\, a place he calls “dirty but sweet\, tough but full of love\, where giants roamed the earth and had names like Whistle and Curly.” That idea of a mythical wonderland informs the new album from head to toe. Strawberry Mansion is not so much about nostalgia for the past as it is about the possibility of better days ahead in this world. These are songs that remind us we’re all part of a collective “Mighty Soul\,” united in one journey\, just like the characters in that old Philly neighborhood. It’s a life-affirming album for these times. \nIt’s hard to track down Nat Myers. He’s one of those young solitaires you hear before you see. As a performer\, he emits but doesn’t distill\, his secrets. His style’s homemade\, unplugged. He began as a street performer before working into traditional venues. He makes his home in Northern Kentucky.

Equal parts genius and buffoon\, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician has become a cult hero and a pop icon\, with a show that appeals to college students\, stoners\, businessmen\, yuppies\, rednecks\, punks\, kids or your grandmother. \nHeywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted\, inventive\, bizarre songs\, sung and played in a variety of styles\, from folk\, to country to rock to pop\, and way beyond. \nYou have to be pretty smart to get Heywood at his deepest level (he demands a high level of pop culture literacy)\, but you can also enjoy him just for his vocal style impersonations\, expert musicianship and just plain silliness. But why trust our opinions? \nPhoto credit: Andy Rogers

Theirs is a story of struggle\, hard knocks and triumph. Essentially unable to cope with modern life\, the members of this band are outcasts of society who survive by playing the lost music of the flatlands where they were raised. \nThe Corn Potatos have delighted audiences with their driving fiddle tunes and harmonious singing across the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Mexico\, and India. They are all multi-instrumentalists dedicated to continuing the music and dance traditions of the Central and Southern US. In addition to being champion fiddlers they play banjo\, guitar\, bass and mandolin and deftly handle many different antiquated styles including ballads\, “ho-downs\,” country “rags” and southern gospel\, specializing in twin fiddling and double banjo tunes. \n

DESCRIPTION:This show has been cancelled. Purchases made will be automatically refunded by MUTO. Contact MUTO at muto-tix@umich.edu with questions. \nFrom the band: “We are disappointed to announce that we will be canceling all of the dates for our February tour due to the ongoing situation with Covid. However\, the good news is that we will be back with a bigger and better tour later this year! All ticket purchases will be refunded by the ticket provider. Keep healthy and well and we’ll provide an update with new tour dates as soon as we can.” \nOcie Elliott is musical duo Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy from Victoria\, B.C.\, Canada. The two have come a long way in a short time since a chance encounter in a Salt Spring Island café led to a spark\, collaboration\, and their ultimate partnership in music and beyond. That was hardly two years ago\, and Ocie has been busy\, releasing both an EP and their debut full-length album We Fall In (Nettwerk Music Group)\, playing with the likes of Mason Jennings\, Sons of the East\, Kim Churchill\, Roo Panes\, Current Swell and Joseph\, touring Canada\, US\, and Europe and having their song “Run To You” featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. \nIn the challenging internet age of streaming music\, Sierra and Jon have cultivated a fast-growing following by releasing a captivating series of live acoustic videos on Facebook recorded in the cozy confines of the couple’s Honda CR-V (which\, Sierra explains\, offers “organically well-rounded and self-contained” acoustics which lend an intimacy to their intricate harmonies). The novel approach has paid off\, with a million streams of their most popular tracks on Spotify and Apple Music\, as well as sold-out shows. \nWith gentle acoustic chords layered over gorgeously complementary voices\, which intertwine in gentle harmonies\, Sierra and Jon’s beautifully written songs explore\, of all things\, love and connection. The duo has been aptly described by one reviewer as “…the aural equivalent of indigo painted skies and the first summer stars.”

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nANAÏS MITCHELL is a Vermont and Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter\, and the Tony and Grammy award-winning creator of the Broadway musical Hadestown for which she wrote the book\, music and lyrics. Hadestown won 8 Tony Awards overall including Best Musical as well as the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. Mitchell was named to TIME’s prestigious TIME100 list in 2020\, and her first book\, ‘Working on a Song – The Lyrics of Hadestown’ was published by Penguin/Plume in the same year. Dubbed by NPR as “one of the greatest songwriters of her generation”\, Mitchell comes from the world of narrative folksong\, poetry and balladry. Her recordings include the original studio album of Hadestown (2010\, featuring Justin Vernon and Ani Difranco) and Young Man in America (2012)\, along with reinterpretations of traditional music including Child Ballads(2013\, with Jefferson Hamer) and Bonny Light Horseman (2020\, as Bonny Light Horseman\, which received two Grammy nominations). She has headlined worldwide and supported tours for Bon Iver\, Josh Ritter and Punch Brothers\, and her music has featured in year-end best lists including NPR\, Wall Street Journal\, MOJO\, Uncut\, The Guardian\, Sunday Times and The Observer. If there’s a common thread in Mitchell’s work it’s that she’s as interested in the world around her as the one inside her. As the New York Times wrote\, “Ms Mitchell’s songs address contemporary angst with uncanny vision….a formidable songwriting talent”.\n\nAnaïs Mitchell is joined on this one-of-a-kind tour by Bonny Light Horseman\, a folk supergroup trio comprised of Mitchell\, Eric D. Johnson (best known for his project Fruit Bats and stints with The Shins)\, and Josh Kaufman (instrumentalist and producer known for his work with Hiss Golden Messenger\, Bob Weir\, The National). Bonny Light Horseman will perform selections from their two-time Grammy nominated album of traditional folk songs with a contemporary twist\, before Anaïs takes to the stage to share songs from her forthcoming album as well as from her back catalogue of audience-favorites on this unique\, collaborative tour.

DESCRIPTION:Watch on The Ark’s Youtube channel \nMustard’s Retreat has always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about\, regardless of the trends of the music industry and pop culture. They are committed to simply being themselves\, not chasing fame or brass rings\, while delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them\, and that is as true now as it was then. \nThey’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6\,000 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. \nTheir performances are always joyful and uplifting\, as well as intelligent\, thought provoking and insightful. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career\, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them. “Folk music is\, at its heart\, defiantly hopeful!” Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. We care much more about what we do and stand for and finding that common ground with our audiences\, than fame or money: this is our community of choice\, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here.” \nArk Family Room shows are free and streamed to The Ark’s Facebook page. SUMMARY:James McMurtry
DESCRIPTION:This show has been rescheduled for June 14\, 2022. Tickets will be reissued automatically for the rescheduled date. Refunds will be available by request only no later than 30 days after the announcement of the new date. \nPlease Note: Proof of Vaccination is required for admission. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nIn James McMurtry’s new effort\, The Horses and the Hounds\, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years\, due August 20 on New West Records\, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation (closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record\,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.” \nThe Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (Ozzy Osbourne\, John Fogerty\, Van Halen\, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica\, California\, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory\, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago\, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington\, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums\, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland\, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album\, Saint Mary of the Woods\, for Sugar Hill Records. Another veteran of those three releases\, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely\, John Mellencamp\, Dixie Chicks)\, returns with some of his finest work. \nAccordingly\, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle\, Rodney Crowell\, Lucinda Williams\, John Hiatt\, Aaron Lee Tasjan\, Buddy Miller\, dozens more). \n“I first became aware of James McMurtry’s formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the ’90s\,” says New West president John Allen. “He’s a true talent. All of us at New West are excited at the prospect of championing the next phase of James’ already successful and respected career.” McMurtry perfectly fits a label housing “artists who perform real music for real people.” After all\, No Depression says of the literate songwriter’s most recent collection\, Complicated Game: “Lyrically\, the album is wise and adventurous\, with McMurtry — who’s not prone to autobiographical tales — credibly inhabiting characters from all walks of life.” “[McMurtry] fuses wry\, literate observations about the world with the snarl of barroom rock\,” National Public Radio says. “The result is at times sardonic\, subversive and funny\, but often vulnerable and always poignant.” \nHis lauded storytelling — check out songs such as “Operation Never Mind” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” on The Horse and the Hounds— consistently has turned heads for decades now. “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime\,” said John Mellencamp back in 1989\, when Too Long in the Wasteland hit the Billboard 200. “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game\,” says Americana all-star Jason Isbell. “He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim\, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Childish Things spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006\, and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year\, with “We Can’t Make It Here” named the organization’s Song of the Year. \nOther accolades include a 1996 Grammy nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body and an American Indie Award for Best Americana Album for It Had to Happen (1997). \nMcMurtry tours year-round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances\, reflected in the release of two live discs: the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records\, and 2009’s Live in Europe\, which captured the McMurtry band’s first European tour and extraordinary live set. Along with seasoned band members Ronnie Johnson\, Daren Hess\, and Tim Holt\, Live in Europe features special guests Ian McLagan (Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers\, Skunks). SUMMARY:A Michigan Tribute to Nanci Griffith
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PDF PROGRAM \nMusicians with Michigan roots will pay tribute to Nanci Griffith by offering covers of her classic songs. Tickets to this streamed performance go on sale Monday\, January 24 at noon. The event will be available for rebroadcast through February 6. \nNanci Griffith was no stranger to The Ark’s stage\, gracing the club with several memorable performances from 1985 to 2013\, including an intimate benefit concert with Billy Joe Shaver and the Cash Brothers in 2003 and an unforgettable evening with Maura O’Connell\, John Gorka and the Chenille Sisters at The Ark’s 40-Year Fling in 2005.  More than quantity\, though\, we celebrate the quality of her music with this tribute show. Her songs are mostly portraits\, and each one is fully filled out with details that fit\, and that reveal the deep resonances of human lives. She brought a poetry to small-town Texas life that shone with beauty and celebrated human resilience. \nNanci’s Other Voices\, Other Rooms album of 1993 took the Grammy award for Best Contemporary Folk Album; it was a tribute to the songwriters who inspired her\, from Kate Wolf to Pat Metheny. She in turn has inspired many of the songwriters who take to The Ark’s stage today\, including the Michigan artists who are lending their voices to this virtual event. She was a cheerleader and ambassador for her fellow artists\, whether emerging or established. At every Ann Arbor Folk Fest she played you could find her stationed backstage\, watching and listening to every set throughout the evening.  Once she drove from Nashville to The Ark to attend a performance of her friend and mentor\, Odetta.  No one who was there will forget the incredible moment when Odetta called her onstage to join the encore. \nEach of Nanci’s appearances in Ann Arbor brought new music\, and often we felt like we had front row seats at her creative process. The message she left when she signed the wall backstage at The Ark: “Sing out\, sing loud\, for Pete’s sake.”  We miss her terribly and are deeply thankful for her music. \nFeatured performers for Saturday’s tribute include Annie and Rod Capps\, Chris Buhalis\, Dave Boutette & Kristi Lynn Davis\, Dick Siegel & Dave Keeney\, Jen Sygit\, London Beck\, The Lucky Nows\, Matt Watroba\, May Erlewine\, Nadim Azzam\, The RFD Boys\, Rochelle Clark\, and The Accidentals with special guests Kim Richey\, Maia Sharp\, Beth Nielsen Chapman\, and The Burney Sisters.
