DESCRIPTION:A free family concert by Joe Reilly and his band featuring Anishinaabe pow wow dancers from Mt. Pleasant. Joe is a local musician with Italian\, Irish\, and Native American (Cherokee and Choctaw) heritage who was raised in Kalamazoo\, Michigan and has strong ties to Ann Arbor. This family-friendly event is great for elementary-school aged kids. The event is free and open to the public with a catered lunch provided beforehand. It is sponsored by the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. \nDoors and lunch at 11:30\, the program beings at 12:30. \nPre-registration for this event is closed\, but walk-ups are welcome after 12pm until we reach capacity.

After two records on Epic\, Fahl had more freedom to pursue her own muse\, whether that meant writing and recording songs for movies (including the theme for the Civil War epic “Gods and Generals”)\, singing arias and medieval Spanish songs for Sony Classical\, or releasing a unique album-length take on “Dark Side of the Moon”… \nWith an earthy\, viscerally powerful contralto that bridges the generational gap between Fairport Convention’s Sandy Denny and London Grammar’s Hannah Reid\, Mary Fahl makes music that feels timeless\, esoteric and ecumenical. Her elegant\, cinematic songs have a hauntingly gothic romanticism that inspired renowned writer Anne Rice to portray Mary’s voice emanating from a dead woman’s room in her 2013 novel The Wolves of Midwinter. \nOver the past few years\, she’s been touring and recording on her own label\, Rimar Records\, and her recent releases have garnered awards including an Indie Acoustic Award for Best Live Album for “Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House” (filmed for PBS) and a 2020 Independent Music Award for her holiday album\, “Winter Songs and Carols”. In 2011\, he graduated from Berklee College of Music\, having studied there on a full scholarship. The following year\, in 2012\, he won the USA’s National Mandolin Championship in Winfield\, KS. A fixture of the bluegrass scene\, he has performed and collaborated with Béla Fleck\, Tony Trischka\, Michael Daves\, Grant Gordy\, Wes Corbett\, and Alex Hargreaves\, to name a few. Additionally\, throughout his 20s\, he toured as a member of the groups Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band. Currently\, his focus is on his own ensemble\, The Jacob Jolliff Band—one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today. They’ve released three albums\, the most recent of which\, “Instrumentals\, Vol. 2: Mandolin Mysteries\,” dropped in May 2024. The band plays a combination of complex original instrumental music and vocal repertoire that spans from trad bluegrass to unlikely pop covers. Investing himself in the American musical diaspora\, he has explored the common thread connecting folk\, blues\, jazz\, ragtime\, and country forms – discovering his personal perspective as a composer in the process. “The music that moves me is imperfect\, honest and raw.” Joshua explains\, “Those qualities are what turned me on to Delta blues\, to punk rock\, to old soul\, and traditional music from all over the globe. DESCRIPTION:This is a special afternoon performance. \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nThere are no advance tickets sold for this afternoon’s show. As a singer\, songwriter\, producer\, composer\, sound engineer\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Beck has carved a unique space for themselves as a leader in modern music. Their body of work includes standout releases such as Blinded by Hunger (2018)\, Revelations EP (2018)\, Drift EP (2019)\, and the concept album ANGXL (2020). Beck’s captivating performances at venues like the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and The Ark have garnered acclaim\, leading to accolades such as Best New Artist in Washtenaw County by Current Magazine. Their community influence extends through collaborations\, including composing for the Skyline High School Symphony Orchestra\, and their involvement with Amplify Washtenaw to support local BIPOC creatives. \nAfter a brief hiatus\, Beck returned stronger than ever\, launching Renivere Recording in 2024—a production company and exclusive record label dedicated to empowering artists and fostering safe\, creative spaces. Beck’s impact continued with a live performance on The Seven Series in June 2024\, marking their official return to the music scene. Known for her commanding vocals and powerful drumming\, Zoey brings a unique energy to every performance—often driving the rhythm section while delivering emotive\, expressive vocals. \nRaised in a musical family\, Zoey grew up immersed in music at the Grekin School of Music\, where she learned to play a variety of instruments and developed her musical voice. She is currently a student at Ann Arbor’s Pioneer High School\, where she has performed as a singer\, and a featured drummer playing along with the Pioneer Choir and Orchestra and performed in the Pioneer Theatre Guild’s 2025 production of Future Stars. \nZoey has performed extensively around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\, both as a solo artist and with her band\, and continues to explore new musical directions with every performance. She is thrilled to bring her sound to The Ark stage. \nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Each show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nAcoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child\, flirting with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine.  \nKottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri\, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina\, then to New London and into the Navy\, with his twelve string. “The trip was not something I enjoyed\,” he has said\, “I was broke and met too many interesting people.” Discharged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues\, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder\, for the Scholar’s tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.)  \nAfter sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Takoma label\, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.  \nKottke’s 1971 major-label debut\, “Mudlark\,” positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein\, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still\, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce\, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol\, as records like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s live “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.  \nHis collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, “Clone\,” caught audiences’ attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called “Sixty Six Steps\,” produced by Leo’s old friend and Prince producer David Z.  \nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

Each member also individually (but at separate times) faced devastating heartbreak\, went to jail\, got sober\, almost quit music entirely\, reconnected with a long-estranged family member\, started making music again\, hit rock bottom\, had a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger who changed their perspective on life\, almost quit music entirely a second time\, reconciled their progressive\, liberal ways with their strict\, conservative upbringing\, and embraced the raw power of their sexuality. It was quite a summer \nAnd sure\, you may be reading this right now saying\, “Wow\, that kind of sounds like the band just basically jammed every album bio cliché they could think of into a single paragraph without anything to back it up in a pathetically transparent attempt to generate press coverage.” But that kind of cynical thinking is exactly why GQ owns Pitchfork now (or whatever the hell happened there). Anyway\, it’s all real\, and if it makes for the kind of inspirational headline that editors and advertisers alike both find highly clickable\, then so be it. \nYou see\, two years ago\, Fantastic Cat was nothing more than a little-known rock band with a cult following (their fans were primarily members of Heaven’s Gate). That all changed with the release of their award-eligible debut\, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat\, which garnered the kind of press you simply can’t make up. USA Today proclaimed\, “We don’t have a music writer anymore\,” while NPR received multiple copies of the album in the mail\, and The New York Times’ Jon Pareles declared\, “I’m currently out of the office and will respond when I return.” \nIndividually\, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nFor decades\, Kathleen Edwards has been a cornerstone of North American roots music.  \nSince making her debut with 2002’s Failer\, she’s spent the 21st century occupying the grey area between genres\, swirling together her own mix of alt-country\, folk\, and heartland rock & roll. It’s a sound that has earned its creator more than a half-dozen Juno nominations\, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist\, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty\, Neil Young\, and Lucinda Williams — she’s opened the door for others\, too\, inspiring a new generation of artists who\, like her\, blur the boundaries between genre and generation.  \nA native of Ottawa\, Ontario\, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album’s warm\, woozy sound — crystallized on radio hits like “Six O’Clock News” — quickly turned her into one of the era’s alt-country heroes. From the very start\, though\, Edwards’ music seemed to exist somewhere out of time\, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for “Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.”  \n“No one knew what to call my type of music back then\,” she says of those early years. “The Americana genre didn’t exist yet\, so they couldn’t categorize me. I just made the kind of music I wanted to make.”  \nEdwards continued blazing her own trail with follow-up albums like Back to Me and Asking for Flowers. By the time Voyageur arrived in 2012\, Americana very much did exist as a genre\, and Edwards found herself riding a newfound commercial peak. The album reached Number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and Number 3 on Billboard’s Folk Albums chart. Even so\, a busy decade on the road had left her exhausted. After touring in support of Voyageur’s release\, Edwards left the music business altogether and moved to suburban Ontario\, where she opened a coffee shop called — defiantly — “Quitters.”  \nWhen a phone call arrived from Maren Morris\, who was looking for songwriting partners for a new project\, Edwards jumped at the chance to collaborate. The two musicians co-wrote “Good Woman\,” which appeared on Morris’ Grammy-nominated album Girl in 2019. Back home in Canada\, Edwards continued to write new material\, eventually partnering with producer Ian Fitchuk for the album Total Freedom. Released in 2020\, the album expanded her sound and her audience; Total Freedom didn’t just mark her return to the music industry. It was a rebirth\, too. \nWhat’s next? New music\, of course. She and Grammy-winner Jim Scott co-produced and released an album called Covers\, which pays homage to some of her songwriting heroes – Tom Petty\, REM\, John Prine\, Bruce Springsteen\, et al. Edwards remains a fan of “ripping guitar riffs and good songs\,” and she’s combining both into a follow-up album co-produced by Grammy-winners Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson that will showcase her legacy as well as her evolution.  \nShe maintains a presence on the road\, too\, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes — including Willie Nelson\, John Fogerty\, and Bob Dylan — the next. \n“The amount of things I’ve gone through might make someone else quit…but quitting doesn’t quite do it for me\,” she says. “I can’t help but want to write great songs\, connect with people\, and see what’s ahead. I don’t love looking behind\, even though it’s one of the ways we can see what we’ve done\, so I’m looking forward.”

DESCRIPTION:With a reputation for spectacular live performances\, the genesis of multi-platinum artist The Verve Pipe can be traced back to the early 90s when the principal members of two rival Michigan bands joined forces. After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals. \nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio. \nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. The album also included ‘Colorful\,’ the emotive ballad featured in the film and soundtrack Rock Star\, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston and also co-starring lead singer Brian Vander Ark in his first major film role. \nIn addition to their success on radio\, TV and film\, sold-out concert dates throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia\, features in Spin and Rolling Stone and videos on MTV and VH1\, the band have made numerous television appearances\, including ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Late Night With David Letterman.’ \nAfter an eight year hiatus\, The Verve Pipe were approached to submit an original song for a compilation album of children’s music. That session inspired A Family Album\, their critically acclaimed introduction to the world of children’s music\, as well as their follow up release\, Are We There Yet? The legendary blues man\, Willie Dixon encouraged him to bring his music into schools over 35 years ago\, and The National Blues Foundation recognized his work as a leading blues educator in 2007. An award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, he is accomplished on guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle and ukulele. Robert is the former host of the award-winning radio programs “Blues from the Lowlands” and “Deep River” broadcast on Detroit Public Radio’s WDET-FM Detroit. He has taught music history courses at Wayne State University in Detroit\, and he serves as a member of the affiliate faculty at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. \nThis is a special night.  In addition to the concert Rev. Robert Jones will be presented with the 2025 Michigan Heritage Award\, Michigan State University.
