DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

DESCRIPTION:At it since 1984\, Blackthorn offers shows that involve a musical ramble across Ireland. Traditional songs of emigration\, ballads\, shanties and jigs and reels combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that is uniquely Irish. Each of the band’s five members plays multiple instruments\, including flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, fiddle\, banjo\, cittern\, bodhran\, and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four-part harmony. This band has been bringing a rich tapestry of Celtic music to southeast Michigan and beyond for almost 40 years\, and they’re a must-see for those who want to know the deep traditions of Irish music in Michigan. They’re members of the Michigan Irish American Hall of Fame. And\, this being December\, there may be a holiday tune or two!

DESCRIPTION:“I was in a long-distance relationship with music for many years\,” jokes singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. Long-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, as well as the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer. Together with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations and continents. \nStill\, other pursuits have always beckoned. Vienna returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a bonus parent to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown. \n“I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes\,” Vienna says of that period. Out of that idea emerged some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done: a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You\,” about leading and leaning on one’s community. When she performs it on stage – solo\, live-looping her voice\, keyboards and percussion to layer the two songs together – the audience response is electric. \n“We’ve Got You” also marks a new chapter of merging her musical and environmental vocations. In 2022\, she launched a “music x climate action” community on Patreon\, combining monthly livestream shows with Zoom climate action sessions\, and hosting workshops between concerts that participants have described as “life-changing\,” “rocket fuel\,” and “the perfect antidote to despair.” \nThe long-distance phase is over. They’ll also be joined by their longtime Good Mischief Band\, Mike Morrison on drums and Eric Fithian on bass. The brothers play songs by many of the artists who’ve inspired them\, including Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seeger\, Bob Dylan\, Tom Paxton\, and the Beatles. They also sing their own songs\, as well as poetry they’ve set to music. Johnny paid for a premium homeowner’s replacement policy for nearly 30 years\, but after 18+ months his insurance company continues to delay fair payment on his claim. A denial of fair payment will shutter this historic Ann Arbor musical institution and force Johnny Williams\, a pillar of our community\, to move away. As of now\, the insurance company stopped paying for temporary housing so Johnny has been forced to move up north near family. This benefit concert features a lineup of some of the finest artists from across Michigan performing in support and solidarity with the grassroots\, community driven campaign to Save the Speakeasy and Bring Johnny Home! King\, Taj Mahal\, Buddy Guy\, R.L.Burnside\, The Dave Matthews Band\, Tracy Chapman\, and Wilco\, among others\, and was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese 2003 film “Feel Like Going Home\,” which traced the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. Corey shares the stage with one of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, creole and zydeco (Louisiana French) music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson—a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist\, and songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential.

DESCRIPTION:The Life I’ve Picked \nAn Evening with John McEuen and The Circle Band: \nJohn takes the audience on his trip with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, one that led to the incredible multi-platinum Will the Circle be Unbroken album which he initiated in 1972. John captured the band over the years on 8mm film\, and with his brother’s (William E. McEuen\, manager/producer) video and stills\, we see the unseen backstory of this iconic musician\, album\, and band.  Exactly what did happen at the magic sessions that created the landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken album? Possibly the most popular and famous Americana/Blue Grass album ever recorded\, and how John started it in Colorado\, is told with the music and video on stage. “These previously unseen shots\, on a huge screen\, are incredible. It’s like being there!” John says\, “We play songs that relate to what is on the screen”. \nJoined by another NGDB co-founder and “Circle” veteran (bass\, mandolin) Les Thompson\, John brings his guitar\, banjo\, fiddle\, and mandolin along with their favorite Dirt Band and Circle songs to the audience. With them will be Danny Knicely (guitar\, mandolin and great vocals) bringing his incredible mastery to this show\, singing some of the songs with his Virginia voice. And\, Bryan McDowell\, also a ‘Winfield winner’\, with his vocals\, guitar and mandolin. John tells the stories behind the songs\, collaborating with such notables as Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Maybelle Carter\, Bob Dylan\, and life-long friend Steve Martin. \nFor The Ark John has invited The Stranded Hoboes to do a cameo performance with him and join in a few ‘Circle’ songs. This bluegrass group (made up with Wounded Warriors)\, and will also play “Bluegrass Banjo Boy” with John\, a tune he recorded with them last year. \nMcEuen’s renown countless jams include street performers to Phish\, Earl Scruggs\, Levon Helm\, Leon Russell… and even Sesame Street with a herd of goats and a cow! Arguably\, McEuen’s most important legacy may be his initiation of what Rolling Stone called “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and 2004 ZAGAT survey called “the most important record in country music” –   Will the Circle Be Unbroken \n………………………… \nA co-founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1966)\, John McEuen has continually performed since 1963 – 11\,500 concerts and 300 television shows throughout more than 4 million miles – both with the band and as a solo performer. He has been honored solo by the Folk Alliance Organization Best in the West Award. Beyond performing\, John has a rich history of creating\, producing and preserving original and traditional folk and acoustic music… and\, taking it to new audiences. \nMcEuen has made over 40 albums (6 solo) that have earned five platinum and five gold recognition awards\, multiple Grammy Awards and nominations\, CMA and ACM awards\, Emmy nominations\, IBMA record of the year award\, and performed on another 25 albums as guest artist. He’s also produced more than 300 concerts  – the first in 1965 in Long Beach Calif.\, with Bob Dylan. \nJohn’s production of Steve Martin – The Crow won the 2010 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy. The Music of the Wild West CD- produced by McEuen\, was honored with the Western Heritage Award. DESCRIPTION:Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary\, indie-folk take on the time-honored fiddle-singing tradition. When playing live\, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and leading his four-piece band. His original music blends folk song writing with an edgy\, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice\, violin and looping-effect pedals. He’s not just a folksinger with a guitar! Although he’s coming to The Ark with his first full-length album\, “For the Giving\,” Aleksi Campagne is not new to the stage. At five years old\, he began performing alongside his mother\, Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor. At 19 he moved  to Paris to study under jazz violin legend Didier Lockwood. At 21\, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin\, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And\, by 25\, Aleksi had graced the lineups of some of Canada’ most beloved folk festivals—including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, the Regina Folk Festival\, and the Northern Lights Festival\, among others.
