Widely hailed for his finger style and hybrid picking technique\, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song “Country Boy.” Albert’s many career highlights include two Grammy wins\, five years in the Eric Clapton band\, and stints with the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman\, The Crickets\, the Everly Brothers\, Joe Cocker\, Emmylou Harris\, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou\, who says\, “When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth\, I’ll be able to say—with pride if that’s allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.”

Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nBlackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music. \nTraditional songs of emigration\, sea shanties\, lively jigs and reels\, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people. \nWhat makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes\, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments\, including wooden flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, five string banjo\, cittern\, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony. \nBlackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit\, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls\, universities and festivals\, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest. \nMetro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorn’s annual appearances on J. P. McCarthy’s St. Patrick’s Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 1990s\, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs\, and have performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010\, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times. \nFrom large festival\, to pub\, restaurant or intimate performing arts center\, Blackthorn provides time tested entertainment. Chuck Ward of the Milwaukee Irish Fest says this about the band\, “Blackthorn was very well received at Milwaukee Irish Fest\, they impressed everyone with their strong and well blended songs. They are strong ambassadors in their commitment to continuing the Irish ballad tradition and a crowd pleasing addition to any festival.”

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nDar Williams has always followed her muse. When she was up in Somerville\, Massachusetts\, in the early nineties\, knowing that she wanted to pursue music or theater\, she worked backstage at the Opera Company of Boston and wrote plays on the side. But she was in Boston\, and the muse led her into the myriad open mics and tip jar gigs of booming folk revival. She opened a trunk of old songs and started writing new ones. Dar still loves every minute of her job and always advises folks to “follow their muse.” She still goes wherever the muse leads her\, which\, presently\, is right back on her couch\, coffee on the coffee table\, guitar in hand\, writing her next batch of songs. Come by and pick up a copy of Dar’s new middle-school children’s novel\,Amalee. \nOpening is Emily Scott Robinson\, named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 New Country and Americana Artists You Need to Know” for 2019.

SUMMARY:Stephen Kellogg
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: Proof of Vaccination is required for admission. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nOver the last decade\, New England native Stephen Kellogg has performed more than 2\,000 concerts around the world\, raised thousands of dollars for causes close to his heart\, been named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year\, and penned singles for artists like platinum selling rock band O.A.R and American Idol winner Nick Fradiani. Stephen’s most recent writing work with legendary guitarist Robert Randolph\, led to a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Blues Record.” He’s also had his songs covered by international major label acts and released ten studio albums of his own yielding hundreds of thousands of ticket and record sales. \nA father of four and married to his high school sweetheart\, filmmaker Peter Harding was so moved by the everyman nature of Kellogg’s story that he made a documentary called “Last Man Standing” which went on to become an Amazon exclusive film. In recent years\, Kellogg has added authorship and speaking to his resume as well. He delivered a TEDx Talk on job satisfaction\, the keynote speech for the prestigious photography summit WRKSHP\, and was invited to speak to the students at Columbine High School in Littleton\, CO on the topics of social justice and ‘finding your voice.’ He has appeared as a contributing author in several publications and in 2020\, will be publishing his first full length book-a collection of essays called\, “Objects in the Mirror: Thoughts on a Perfect Life from an Imperfect Person.” \nKellogg’s newest studio album\, Objects In The Mirror\, was recorded over the course of a single week in Nashville\, TN. Produced by Will Hoge and featuring twelve songs that explore American life in 2018\, the decision was made to track the band live\, keeping the results in tact with minimal overdubs. “I wanted to make an album that sounded and felt like the ones I grew up loving; Bob Seger and Cat Stevens\, Tom Petty and Rod Stewart. Emotional records where the songs relate to each other and the lyrics are front and center. That’s my true north.” That sentiment comes through loud and clear on Objects In The Mirror\, an album which Rolling Stone says sounds ‘like John Prine fronting The Heartbreakers.” Another journalist succinctly describes his music as “a beautiful display of- well\, his heart\,” while Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz told Glide Magazine\, “He’s just one of the most likable people I’ve known. There are few people in rock n’ roll who are just so great.” \nWhile Stephen Kellogg may have remained underneath the radar for some in the mainstream\, he has succeeded in building a meaningful career alongside many of the best in the business. He’s sung duets with Sara Bareilles\, Josh Ritter\, Rosanne Cash\, and Pat Monahan of Train and participated in the 2018 “Garden Of Dreams’ concert at the Beacon Theater. His music has found its way onto the Billboard charts and been featured in numerous films and TV shows. Whether performing solo or with a band\, Kellogg’s soul and energy fuel one of the most dynamic shows anywhere. “With beautifully written songs and an engaging personality”\, The Michigan Daily reports\, “Kellogg appears as if he was born on stage\, taking the spotlight and using it to his advantage\, but never letting go of his connection with the audience.” A master storyteller in his prime\, he will spend much of 2020 where he’s always been at home…the road.

They’re among the first to truly give voice and openly represent Jewish American culture\, tradition\, values and spirituality in the world of American roots music. In a testament to the unbridled imagination and extraordinary grace of their musicianship\, each track on Songs for the Sparrows ineffably evokes the sensation of roaming through the unknown. True to the album’s spirit of loving inclusivity\, Lindberg and Zasloff\, have created an elegantly wayward sound by melding elements of everything from Americana and Appalachian bluegrass to Celtic folk and Eastern European music. Not only a reflection of their vast musical knowledge\, that open-hearted embracing of so many eclectic genres also speaks to the joyful curiosity that animates every aspect of their artistry.

He hasn’t moved to LA or Nashville; he’s stayed in the cold grey north of Minnesota\, because that’s his home. Charlie makes his Smithsonian Folkways Recordings debut with ‘Last of The Better Days Ahead’\, out worldwide July 30\, 2021. \nDead Horses isn’t a band in the conventional sense. Rather\, it’s an intimate\, folk-inspired conversation between two close friends. At its core\, the participants are guitarist/singer Sarah Vos and bassist Daniel Wolff. Dead Horses weave together a vibrant patchwork of classic and contemporary influences that span trad roots\, indie- folk\, and other experimental musical idioms. Through it all\, the union of Sarah’s emotive songwriting with Dan’s intrepid bass playing transcends the singer-songwriter-with-backup-musicians paradigm.

He’s a virtuoso to beat the band! Andy entertains both the eye and the ear with his use of altered tunings\, tapping\, partial capos\, percussive hits\, and with his signature two-handed technique. His guitar performance videos have received hundreds of millions of views on the Internet\, and at one point he held the top three positions on YouTube’s list of top-rated videos of all time. After starting out on electric guitar\, Andy switched as a teen to acoustic and began studying the music of Michael Hedges\, Don Ross\, Billy McLaughlin\, and Preston Reed. To this day he still cites those four musicians as primary influences. Master craftsman and innovator at the same time\, Andy McKee is a virtuoso for our time\, and his live shows are absolutely legendary. \nThe unfolding era of the music business has provided many fresh opportunities for artists to foster direct and meaningful connections with new audiences around the globe. Trevor Gordon Hall is a powerful emerging voice\, albeit without words to his music\, showing that combining honest heart felt compositions with precise technical virtuosity do not sideline an artist in today’s world but can launch a wider reach than ever before. With an exploding presence on streaming services like Spotify\, YouTube etc.\, a tour calendar that has taken him all over the world\, it’s safe to say that this is a new era for artists like Trevor to engage listeners from all cultures\, languages\, genres\, and backgrounds.

Contact MUTO at muto-tix@umich.edu with questions. \nA cross-pollination of numerous influences\, including cabaret\, spaghetti Westerns\, norteño\, punk\, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe\, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa\, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals\, guitar\, trumpet)\, Tom Hagerman (violin\, accordion)\, Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone\, bass) and percussionist Shawn King\, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor. \nThey found widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie\, Anti-\, the band delivered A Mad and Faithful Telling in early 2008\, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed\, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work\, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris\, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour\, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years\, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career\, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love\, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot\, Paddington\, and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. Meanwhile\, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session\, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album\, This Night Falls Forever\, this time via Concord Records.

SUMMARY:Arlo McKinley
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: Proof of Vaccination is required for admission. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.  \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nGifted singer-songwriter Arlo McKinley will release his debut solo record at age 40 on John Prine’s Oh Boy records – after he almost gave up on music altogether\, his story is one of hope and sincerity\, and he is living proof that great songs will reach the right ears eventually\, even if it takes time. \nMcKinley’s Oh Boy Records solo debut\, Die Midwestern\, is deeply rooted in street soul\, country\, punk\, and gospel and draws on personal stories\, set against the backdrop of his hometown of Cincinnati Ohio. It was crafted downriver\, in Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service\, produced by GRAMMY award-winning Matt Ross-Spang\, with an all-star Memphis band of Ken Coomer\, David Smith\, Will Sexton\, Rick Steff\, Jessie Munson and Reba Russell. There\, McKinley recorded ten remarkable songs – some dating back fifteen years – all penned with a weight\, honesty and gritty-hope that comes from living in the rustbelt city where his songs were born. Matt Ross-Spang stated\, “I am in awe of Arlo’s songs and his dedication and embodiment of each one when he performs them. His willingness to bare it all on this record was more electric than the equipment used to capture it.” \nArlo McKinley is the last artist John and his son Jody signed together to their label Oh Boy records. Jody Whelan shared\, “John was reserved in his praise for songwriters. I played him a couple of Arlo’s songs and he heard Bag Of Pills and said\, “that’s a good song” which for him\, was very high praise. He loved Arlo’s voice\, this big guy with a sweet\, soulful\, gospel voice. He loved the dichotomy of the hard life lived\, presented through such beautiful songs and John was very excited about the promise of the album’s release.” \nMcKinley stated\, “The feeling of knowing that a hero of mine took time out of his day to come see me perform is such an accomplishment in itself to me that if it all ended the next day and I found out music just wasn’t in the cards for me\, I would’ve still considered everything I have done as a success.” \nOn Die Midwestern\, McKinley’s songs bleed truth and emotion from a heart scarred by wild nights and redeemed by soulful Sunday morning confessions. His lyrics are laid bare\, stark and arresting in their honesty\, and often penned from real-life experience. “Bag Of Pills” is an autobiographical and frank account of the drug issues which affect his hometown\, “I wrote it after I sold some pills so I could take a girl out. Those were rough times and also right around the time I started seeing a real drug addiction very close to me. After watching so many friends die from drug abuse it turned into me praying that it doesn’t get any worse while knowing that it will resulting in my writing of the lyrics\, ‘life I don’t want it if it’s so easy to die.’” \n“Gone For Good” sees McKinley share his lessons from broken relationships\, \n“I wrote ‘Gone For Good’ after a serious long relationship of mine ended. It’s about me realizing how short I fell on even trying to make it work.” Title track “Die Midwestern” reflects on McKinley’s love/hate relationship with Ohio\, “I love it because it’s everything that I am but I hate it because I’ve seen it take my loved ones lives. I’ve seen it make hopeful people hopeless.” McKinley reflects on his brutal honesty in his songs\, “Songwriting has to be real. I’m 100% putting myself out there\, I’m not writing fiction. To me it is just about honesty. “ \nBy age 8\, McKinley was singing at his family’s church\, Bethlehem United Baptist where he first saw the light of music. Early musical loves outside church were his Kentucky native father’s bluegrass and timeless country records of Hank Williams\, Sr. as well as\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, Otis Redding and George Jones. Then his two older brothers’ punk and metal collection drove him to throw himself raw onto the Cincinnati punk scene. \n“I grew up in the punk scene with my brothers and dad has all of that stuff that came out of King Records like Hank Williams and I was just surrounded by it\,” McKinley says. “I still take parts of it and I feel I write songs in a punk rock way…” \nWith concert covers ranging from Johnny Paycheck and The Misfits to Rihanna and Post Malone McKinley shows a diverse range of musical interest\, which he attributes to musically melting pot of the Cincinnati music scene\, \n“You go back to the history of Cincinnati music and you can see and feel that the river back then connected everything and it all flowed into one spot and brought all kinds of music here\,” says McKinley\, adding\, “That’s why I think this town has never been known for one kind of music because so many things came through here.” \nHe pursued a solo career from 2014\, with his own band The Lonesome Sound and achieved some success including a nomination for Album of the Year\, Songwriter of the Year and Best Americana Act from the Cincinnati Music Awards\, but his career stalled and he almost gave up altogether\, \n“I don’t know why the world works the way it does but I’m beyond grateful to be in this situation.” McKinley stated\, adding\, “I’m a little wiser in my ways and a 20 something me would’ve found a way to destroy the one dream that has stuck with me my entire life. Being a working musician.” \nHe also almost missed his big break\, which came when he was offered an opening slot for Tyler Childers\, and his now manager\, was trying to reach him on the phone to offer him an opening slot. Arlo initially dodged the persistent unknown caller. Eventually\, they connected after a friend hit him up on social media and he took the call. \n“My buddy was like\, Arlo.. Tyler’s team are trying to get hold of you.. I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t take that call. Still delivering tuxedos which was my side job before I was a full-time musician.” \nSince\, McKinley has been making a name for himself around the country\, humbly sharing stages with kindred musical spirits John Moreland\, Jason Isbell\, Justin Townes Earle\, and contemporary rising singer/songwriters Ian Noe and Colter Wall\, eventually attracting the attention of Oh Boy\, who signed him in March 2020. \nMcKinley reflects on the significance of the timing of his release\, stating\, “I only met John briefly and I would’ve loved to have sat with John and talked music which I’m sure would’ve happened but I treasure the moment we had together when he came to see me play a show. His passing was a major knockdown blow for the entire team. I’m sure John had a vision for Oh Boy Records and I’m proud and honored to be able to contribute to the labels continued legacy.” \nMcKinley’s Die Midwestern remains an album of hope and he knows first hand how his music can connect with his growing audience. \n“I had a guy who was dealing with brain cancer walk up to me and say that he was done with it but something in my songs resonated with him and made him get out and start living even though he knows what is ahead of him. Nothing is more important than that. That’s why I write songs like I do. I’m just another lost\, hurting person in this place – I just like to sing about it.”

NPR summed it up best\, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.” \nEvoking themes of “hope\, love\, contemplation\, celebration of Wednesday\, pharmacists\, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other\,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. Pepper” album in his father’s record collection. After wearing the record out on his aqua green playschool record player\, Peter went on to create his own house music\, setting up plastic trash cans and using pencils as drumsticks. Eventually his grandfather purchased real drum sticks to replace the pencils and a true musician was born. Peter Bradley Adams’ brand of Americana songwriting nestles his often delicate\, always heartfelt voice in the warm embrace of gentle guitar\, tasteful dobro\, subtle banjo\, supportive bass\, and unhurried percussion. The result is a sonic scape that\, in turn\, wraps itself around the listener like a soft blanket on a cold day.

Then\, barely out of high school\, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega\, John Gorka\, Bill Morrissey\, Cliff Eberhardt\, and others—where she fit right in—and kept on singing after earning a degree and working in the field of clinical psychology. She’s a singer-songwriter with an extraordinary feel for the range of human emotion. Lucy puts her own spin on contemporary songwriter folk with warm\, powerful vocals and guitar playing that draws guitar gods (or geeks) to talk shop with her. Lucy Kaplansky\, says the Boston Globe\, “is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern city folk.”

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nYou may have encountered Carsie Blanton through her great John Prine tribute that circulated earlier this year\, but there’s a lot more to this New Orleans songstress than that. “Like the singer-songwriters she admires\, Carsie Blanton is making folk-based music that prizes wordplay and an antic sense of humor. You can hear jazz\, Motown and power pop in her melodies and phrasing\, which makes her stuff delightfully surprising but doesn’t help her in commercial categorization\,” says Ken Tucker of NPR. “Her tone never becomes cute because she phrases with such purpose. And what she’s talking about is almost always earthy if not downright down and dirty.” Carsie has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe since 2006\, as a headliner and as support for Paul Simon\, The Wood Brothers\, The Weepies\, Shawn Colvin and many more. Her live performances\, which include material from every album\, have been praised for their wit\, humor\, and captivating charm. \nA songwriter’s songwriter\, known for his lyric craft\, distinctive voice and soulful songs steeped in classic rhythm & blues\, pop\, jazz\, folk and country\, Milton first gained notoriety in his hometown New York City when his song “In The City” became a hit on New York’s WFUV radio. His live performances\, which include material from every one of his albums\, are praised for their wit\, humor\, and captivating charm.

SUMMARY:Chicago Farmer & The Fieldnotes

Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nSays Todd Snider about Chicago Farmer: “I love Chicago Farmer’s singing and playing and songs\, but it’s the intention behind the whole of his work that moves me to consider him the genuine heir to Arlo Guthrie or Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He knows the shell game that goes on under folk music … which is sacred to me. Chicago Farmer is my brother; if you like me\, you’ll love him.” Chicago Farmer is Cody Diekhoff\, who came from the Illinois farming community of Delavan. Many of his songs are in the Woody Guthrie vein\, populist as well as autobiographical. Cody logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer (originally the name of a group) before settling in the city in 2003. He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams\, and it was a revelation. Profoundly inspired as well by fellow Midwesterner John Prine\, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. Cody writes music for the “kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan\, everyone has a story\, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way\,” he says. \nOpening is Erin Zindle\, the songwriter\, fiddler\, and leader of the nationally-touring folk-rock band Erin Zindle & The Ragbirds. With a genre-bending hybrid of indie-pop melodies\, global-infused beats\, rock guitar riffs\, conscious lyrics and virtuosic fiddling\, Erin Zindle & The Ragbirds deliver something that’s hard to define. Her voice is both earthy and ethereal\, full of character and texture with lyrics that point to the daily paradox of intentionally cultivating hope in the midst of a crazed and jaded world. She skillfully switches between violin\, kalimba\, piano\, and accordion\, never losing her infectious smile
