DESCRIPTION:Americana and Alt-Country artist Judy Banker returns to The Ark with her all-star band for a birthday concert that also celebrates the release of her fourth studio album\, “Bona Fide.” With this newest release\, Judy’s songwriting—rife with melodic hooks and raw\, poetic lyrics set to layered\, innovative arrangements—has evolved\, crossing over and blending jazz\, R&B\, and rock to create something that feels at once familiar and wholly original. Musical partner to Michigan songwriting legend Jay Stielstra for nearly 15 years\, and music director of the fall 2022 40th-anniversary revival of Jay’s musical play “North Country Opera\,” Judy has been writing and recording her own music for the past decade\, with her debut release\, “Without You\,” nearing its ten-year anniversary. With three highly regarded studio albums under her belt and a single\, “Blessed Be the Nation”—a poem of Pete Seeger’s Judy set to her original music—Judy has established herself as a staple of the southeast Michigan music scene. \nAlong with copies of “Bona Fide” and other music merch\, Judy will have available for purchase copies of photographs she is known for capturing of the rural/natural areas surrounding Ann Arbor. The Boston Globe says that her “provocative\, dark-eyed ballads are becoming the talk of the folk world.” Antje is a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival’s Best New Folk Award\, and the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act. \nJoe Crookston and Antje Duvekot are touring in the Midwest in early November performing a creative storytelling collaborative concert called Imagine Nation. \nThey will perform the entire show together on stage\, weaving in and out of harmonies presenting as a duo.

However\, the 50th Anniversary Celebration of You Don’t Mess Around With Jim has prompted the most affectionate look back yet at his father’s enduring legacy.  The renewed interest leading up to the celebration of the classic album (which was recorded for only $18\,000 and spent an incredible 93 weeks on the charts) has inspired a special version of A.J.’s popular ‘Croce Plays Croce’ concert series. \nA.J. crisscrossed the country in 2021 with this unique concert experience to sold out shows and rave reviews: ‘As a considerate tribute\, Croce Plays Croce covered just about everything a fan could expect. Instead\, the evening felt more like a family reunion.’ – Live Music News & Review \nThis special 50th Anniversary performance promises A.J.’s unique interpretation of Jim’s iconic You Don’t Mess Around With Jim album with a full band and visual presentation of the songs\, including indelible hits\, “Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels’)\, “Time In A Bottle\,” and others. \nJim Croce found long-overdue success in 1972 following years of struggling to make a name in the music business. That year he released his debut album\, You Don’t Mess Around With Jim\, which topped the Billboard Album chart for more than a month\, spawning the hit singles “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim\,” “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)\,” and “Time in a Bottle”. His final studio effort\, I’ve Got a Name\, was released just after he passed in Fall of 1973\, ten days after his death. Three more hits (“Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues\,” “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” and the title song) came from that album\, which reached #2 in the album charts. His records earned three #1’s and ten Top 10’s. His three classic albums (including Life and Times) amazingly were recorded in just a one-and-a-half-year period. Jim Croce was just thirty when he died but helped christen the singer/songwriter era of the early 70s\, influencing generations of great songwriters to come.  He has achieved unprecedented record sales for a working-class\, solo ‘folk’ artist including The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame induction\, surpassing the 50 million sales mark (worldwide) with his memorable self-penned tunes gracing more than 375 compilations. His music continues to be included in major films\, TV shows\, and commercials including Apple’s Siri Ad\, Tarantino’s Django Unchained\, the X-Men franchise\, Netflix’s Stranger Things and currently in George Clooney’s The Tender Bar. \nA.J. was only two years old when his father was killed in a tragic airplane crash in 1973\, but came to love and appreciate his dad’s blue-collar\, empathetic wordplay and irresistible melodies\, “just like everyone else…by listening to the albums\,” says A.J. The younger Croce never performed his dad’s song live until he came across a batch of old covers Jim Croce recorded of classic and obscure blues and folk songs\, including work by Fats Waller\, Bessie Smith\, and Pink Anderson.  “I was amazed to discover he was into stuff I was playing myself\,” says A.J. DESCRIPTION:King Sophia has a degree in classical cello from the University of Miami. She is also\, she says\, “a vocalist\, an electric guitarist\, a songwriter and composer\, an arranger\, a conductor\, a performer and recording artist\, a teacher\, and above all\, a student and a catalyst for change.” She classifies her songs as Neo-Soul Art Music\, “but I play across a variety of genres including classical\, jazz\, blues\, R&B\, funk\, hip hop\, bluegrass\, and pop. I also consider much of the music I write and arrange to be protest music — a genre that I believe is crucial to our survival as a species and that I will continue to draw attention to throughout my musical journey.” \nAnn Arbor alternative soul artist Dani Darling Dani Darling made her media debut in 1984—as one of a set of triplets born in Ann Arbor. She sang with her sisters as a girl\, and later did stints in a reggae band and in the hip-hop collective The Black Opera. But\, she told the Metro Times\, she wasn’t sure hip-hop was the right direction for her: “I was like\, who am I? So I was trying to figure it out. I’m more of an acoustic artist\, you know. I write with my guitar\, I have a big background in\, like\, old movie musicals and jazz. My favorite vocalist is Ella Fitzgerald\, and Thom Yorke is one of my biggest inspirations.” A new sound came together\, featuring classic influences like R&B and jazz as well as new sounds like lo-fi and chillwave\, all fused in her own original songs that often have a cosmic tinge.  \nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark.  \nEach show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

Delta 88’s music has been heard on stages throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe with the likes of bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley\, country star Emmylou Harris\, and singer-songwriter Buddy Miller\, among others. DESCRIPTION:The son of a small-town farming community\, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow Midwesterner John Prine\, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small-town roots\, tilled with city streets mentality\, are turning heads North and South of I-80. \n“I love the energy\, music\, and creativity of Chicago\, but at the same time\, the roots and hard work of my small town\,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan\, Illinois\, with a population less than 2\,000\, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers\, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs. \nHe writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan\, everyone has a story\, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way\,” he says. “My generation may have been labeled as slackers\, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t work hard – many people I know put in 50-60 hours a week and 12-hour days. That’s what keeps me playing. I don’t like anyone to be left out; my music is for everyone in big and very small towns.” \nHe listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams\, and it was a revelation. Prine and Guthrie quickly followed. DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. Williams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. \nLike everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \nDar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she’s had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90’s Boston scene\, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers\, Berklee jazz musicians\, slam poets\, and folk artists\, like Patty Griffith\, Melissa Ferrick\, the Throwing Muses\, Vance Gilbert\, and Jonatha Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album\, The Honesty Room\, in 1994\, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. \n“Good and bad things happen\, and it’s not necessarily a reward or indictment. I’ve just got to meet it.” Williams observes. “Like\, I’m bringing my whole life to this moment; it will surprise me\, challenge me\, show me where I was wrong\, even make a fool out of me\, but my job is to show up and not take adversity personally. Real happiness doesn’t have to feel like Snoopy dancing with Woodstock; it can just be knowing you have the resilience to meet whatever comes to you. I will call that a good life.”

DESCRIPTION:Gemini is the much-loved duo of Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits. They’ve been performing since 1973 and are now playing music for the third—or is it fourth?—generation of young fans and families. They write and perform acoustic music for children and families\, celebrating with their audiences the warmth\, fun\, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event\, filled with rousing singalongs\, hand motion tunes\, folk tales\, and music from around the world. “If the Pied Piper had been twins\, chances are he would have been Gemini\,” says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents’ Choice Magazine\, the American Library Association\, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA)\, and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts. This is Gemini’s first live show at The Ark since the pandemic\, and it features Brian Brill on piano. Still\, there’s serious business in the group’s take on “We Three Kings” with the genuine Oriental influence of Ming Xioo-Fen’s pipa playing\, and Reid’s readings of the traditional songs “The Huron Carol” and “In The Bleak Midwinter” are as reverent as standard Christmas songs get. Roberts’ basso profoundo\, on the other hand\, is an acquired taste and he puts it to wickedly good use in “Jingle Bells\,” which is delivered like a medieval chant or rugby cry that’s certain to put the fear in jolly old St. Nick.” The dynamic and engaging stage show will feature original members Brad Roberts\, Ellen Reid\, Dan Roberts and Mitch Dorge who will be joined as always by Stuart Cameron and relative newcomer\, Leith Fleming-Smith\, delivering songs from Jingle All The Way along with some of the bands greatest hits! \n“Jingle All The Way” will be available on vinyl for the first time and will be made available on streaming services.

The trajectory for Geneviève’s career has been on a tremendous incline since her album “No Water\, No Flowers” catapulted her from Quebec recognition to national praise\, including a Canadian Folk Music Award\, performing on stage with City and Colour\, rave reviews from media\, music publications and blogs\, and tracking on multiple radio stations right across Canada. SUMMARY:Seamus Egan
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to think of an artist in traditional Irish music more influential than Seamus Egan. From his beginnings as a teen prodigy\, to his groundbreaking solo work with Shanachie Records\, to his founding of Irish-American powerhouse band Solas\, to his current work as one of the leading composers and interpreters of the tradition\, Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today. As a multi-instrumentalist\, he’s put his mark on the sound of the Irish flute\, tenor banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, tin whistle\, and low whistle\, among others. As a composer\, he was behind the soundtrack for the award-winning film “The Brothers McMullen\,” co-wrote Sarah McLachlan’s breakout hit\, “I Will Remember You\,” and has scored numerous documentaries and indie films since. As a bandleader\, Solas was the preeminent Irish-American band of their generation for decades\, continuously renewing Irish music with fresh ideas. As a performer\, few others can make so many instruments or such wickedly complex ornaments seem so effortless. Music comes as naturally to Seamus Egan as breath\, but his mastery of the tradition is only one facet of his plans to move the music forward.

DESCRIPTION:For the month of December\, the boundary pushing Americana powerhouse Nefesh Mountain is hitting the road on the Love And Light Tour. Their aim for this unique month-long run of shows is to put forth messages of inclusivity\, unity and love\, largely in response to the current and devastating war in Israel and Gaza. For these special performances\, they have curated an incredibly diverse list of originals and covers\, hoping to spread light in these dark times through their music and famously dynamic and touching live shows. The tour also comes on the heels of three brand new singles released this year in anticipation of their newest album “The Cabin Sessions” coming out in February 2024. \nLeaders and husband and wife team Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg have been proudly open and vocal about their background and heritage as Jewish Americans since they formed the group nearly a decade ago\, and are among the first preeminent Americana/Bluegrass musicians to infuse Jewish culture into the beautifully diverse tapestry of American roots music. For them the music is wholly American\, freely expressing their own identities while at the same time firmly standing against hate\, discrimination and intolerance of all forms including anti-semitism\, which has seen an unprecedented rise in recent years and even more in the weeks since the war in Israel and Gaza. Nefesh Mountain has recorded and shared the stage with Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Bryan Sutton\, John Doyle\, Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers)\, Mark Schatz (Bèla Fleck\, Nickel Creek)\, Mike Gordon (Phish) and Tony Trischka among others. The Troubadours along with their band continue to forge new paths in unknown territory\, armed with Zasloff and Lindberg’s strong\, smokey\, and folksy vocals and Lindberg’s soulful and masterful skills on acoustic and electric guitars and banjo. \nA personal message from Doni and Eric: \n“Our hearts were shattered on October 7 after the horrifying attacks in Israel that resulted in the devastating loss of innocent lives and the taking of over 220 hostages\, and continue to splinter into pieces as the war ensues on the people of Gaza who are tragically killed and caught in the crossfire. We have long been humanitarians and activists\, but as musicians who ultimately have our songs and performances to give this world\, we humbly offer these unique shows in December as an olive branch and safe space for those who are in search of more unity\, compassion\, and light. As a progressive Americana/Bluegrass band we have long shared our love for the music of this country\, which in and of itself is a celebration of our own diversity and our differences. We hope that these shows can illuminate the goodness that we know will always be out there in this world.”
