DESCRIPTION:If you haven’t heard of the cheerfully named supergroup Mr. Sun\, you’ve certainly heard its proponents\, four of the finest musicians on the American Roots scene: Renowned fiddler Darol Anger\, Professor Emeritus at Berklee College of Music\, who has released dozens of influential solo albums over a 50-year career in addition to his work with David Grisman and Mike Marshall\, and founded the Turtle Island Quartet\, Psychograss\, and Republic of Strings; Joe K. Walsh\, mandolin virtuoso and vocalist who spent four years with the award-winning bluegrass act the Gibson Brothers before becoming a solo artist\, songwriter\, and Strings Department Professor at Berklee; all-around guitar genius Grant Gordy\, a former member of David Grisman’s band and respected solo artist and educator; and the phenomenal Scots bassist Aidan O’Donnell\, who has backed harpist Maeve Gilchrist and countless modern jazz heroes. Their appearances in the last few years at Wintergrass\, Rockygrass\, Grey Fox\, Freshgrass\, Redwing Roots\, and at IBMA conventions have created a reverberant clang throughout the Acoustic Americana music world. \nThis program is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. SUMMARY:Charlie Cunningham
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Cunningham has emerged as a truly under-the-radar success story. He has headlined London’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Hall and has become a regular fixture in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls. Splitting his time between piano and nylon string guitar\, Charlie creates melancholic yet rhythmically driven songs. When these are expressed with his characteristic restraint\, something timeless takes shape. Despite his dyslexia making it nearly impossible for him to read music\, Charlie earned a music degree and by his mid-20s worked a variety of odd jobs and wrote songs in his free time. Eventually\, he moved to Seville\, immersed himself in flamenco music and focused intensely on his guitar playing. Planning to stay for three months\, he stayed for three years. Once home\, Charlie found work playing in bars across London and Oxford ­—eventually returning to songwriting. Charlie has subsequently released two albums and four eps which have garnered over half a billion streams. Charlie comes to Michigan with his his third album\, “Frame.” A collection of lush\, delicate pop songs brimming with references to art rock\, golden era jazz\, and neo-classical composition—all the while maintaining the pared-back and clear-eyed musicality for which he is so well recognized. Throughout the album\, Charlie creates the fragility\, power and tension found in timeless songwriting\, reanimated through a modern lens.

DESCRIPTION:Comprised of Don Mitchell\, Auyon Mukharji\, Harris Paseltiner and David Senft\, four likeminded multi-instrumentalists who first met at Williams College in 2009\, Darlingside’s career has been defined by the elegance of their compositions and the unity of their four voices. Their talent for harmony and melodic world-building is part of what garnered praise from outlets like NPR\, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker\, and what has created demand worldwide for their extraordinary live performances. Becoming beautifully unindividualized has\, in other words\, worked very well for Darlingside in the past. With a vigor and discipline more common to graduate-level writing workshops than to indie rock\, Darlingside has\, over the years\, experimented with all manners of idiosyncratic methods for elevating and upholding a truly democratic process of songwriting—processes that include multiple rounds of group writing and recording exercises—all with the aim of escaping the trap that bands with multiple songwriters often fall into: ego-driven infighting and artistic incoherence. \nIt’s a rare thing and becoming rarer by the day: a group of musicians with that emulsifying magic to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. And to see Darlingside perform live is to confirm this special chemistry. With the release of Everything Is Alive (2023) the band will\, for the first time\, take to the road without Dave Senft. Instead of filling his spot directly\, the band has wisely chosen to honor the special chemistry of the foursome by letting those arrangements live on the recordings without obligation to faithfully recreate them onstage. While Dave remains a contributing member of the band\, on tour Darlingside will perform in a completely different configuration altogether—a configuration that will\, at times\, include the album’s drummer Ben Burns\, singer Molly Parden\, and others—proving again how the group can adroitly rearrange themselves for the breaking of a new and different day.

DESCRIPTION:Americana and Alt-Country artist Judy Banker returns to The Ark with her all-star band for a birthday concert that also celebrates the release of her fourth studio album\, “Bona Fide.” With this newest release\, Judy’s songwriting—rife with melodic hooks and raw\, poetic lyrics set to layered\, innovative arrangements—has evolved\, crossing over and blending jazz\, R&B\, and rock to create something that feels at once familiar and wholly original. Judy and her band—David Roof\, John Sperendi\, Tony Pace\, Alan Pagliere & Brian Williams—will be performing “Bona Fide” cover to cover as well as favorite selections from Judy’s other records. \nAs a longtime Ann Arbor–based musician\, Judy has deep connections to the region. Musical partner to Michigan songwriting legend Jay Stielstra for nearly 15 years\, and music director of the fall 2022 40th-anniversary revival of Jay’s musical play “North Country Opera\,” Judy has been writing and recording her own music for the past decade\, with her debut release\, “Without You\,” nearing its ten-year anniversary. The Boston Globe says that her “provocative\, dark-eyed ballads are becoming the talk of the folk world.” Antje is a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival’s Best New Folk Award\, and the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act. \nJoe Crookston and Antje Duvekot are touring in the Midwest in early November performing a creative storytelling collaborative concert called Imagine Nation. \nThey will perform the entire show together on stage\, weaving in and out of harmonies presenting as a duo.

That year he released his debut album\, You Don’t Mess Around With Jim\, which topped the Billboard Album chart for more than a month\, spawning the hit singles “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim\,” “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)\,” and “Time in a Bottle”. His final studio effort\, I’ve Got a Name\, was released just after he passed in Fall of 1973\, ten days after his death. Three more hits (“Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues\,” “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” and the title song) came from that album\, which reached #2 in the album charts. Jim Croce was just thirty when he died but helped christen the singer/songwriter era of the early 70s\, influencing generations of great songwriters to come.  He has achieved unprecedented record sales for a working-class\, solo ‘folk’ artist including The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame induction\, surpassing the 50 million sales mark (worldwide) with his memorable self-penned tunes gracing more than 375 compilations. His music continues to be included in major films\, TV shows\, and commercials including Apple’s Siri Ad\, Tarantino’s Django Unchained\, the X-Men franchise\, Netflix’s Stranger Things and currently in George Clooney’s The Tender Bar. \nA.J. was only two years old when his father was killed in a tragic airplane crash in 1973\, but came to love and appreciate his dad’s blue-collar\, empathetic wordplay and irresistible melodies\, “just like everyone else…by listening to the albums\,” says A.J. The younger Croce never performed his dad’s song live until he came across a batch of old covers Jim Croce recorded of classic and obscure blues and folk songs\, including work by Fats Waller\, Bessie Smith\, and Pink Anderson.  “I was amazed to discover he was into stuff I was playing myself\,” says A.J. She is also\, she says\, “a vocalist\, an electric guitarist\, a songwriter and composer\, an arranger\, a conductor\, a performer and recording artist\, a teacher\, and above all\, a student and a catalyst for change.” She classifies her songs as Neo-Soul Art Music\, “but I play across a variety of genres including classical\, jazz\, blues\, R&B\, funk\, hip hop\, bluegrass\, and pop. I also consider much of the music I write and arrange to be protest music — a genre that I believe is crucial to our survival as a species and that I will continue to draw attention to throughout my musical journey.” \nAnn Arbor alternative soul artist Dani Darling Dani Darling made her media debut in 1984—as one of a set of triplets born in Ann Arbor. She sang with her sisters as a girl\, and later did stints in a reggae band and in the hip-hop collective The Black Opera. But\, she told the Metro Times\, she wasn’t sure hip-hop was the right direction for her: “I was like\, who am I? So I was trying to figure it out. I’m more of an acoustic artist\, you know. I write with my guitar\, I have a big background in\, like\, old movie musicals and jazz. My favorite vocalist is Ella Fitzgerald\, and Thom Yorke is one of my biggest inspirations.” A new sound came together\, featuring classic influences like R&B and jazz as well as new sounds like lo-fi and chillwave\, all fused in her own original songs that often have a cosmic tinge.  \nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark.  \nEach show\, intentional time will be taken to get to know each artist in the form of brief interviews and musical breaks to have them speak about their journey as musicians and performers with the hope that people in the audience are more connected to and inspired by those voices.

DESCRIPTION:The son of a small-town farming community\, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow Midwesterner John Prine\, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small-town roots\, tilled with city streets mentality\, are turning heads North and South of I-80. \n“I love the energy\, music\, and creativity of Chicago\, but at the same time\, the roots and hard work of my small town\,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan\, Illinois\, with a population less than 2\,000\, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers\, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs. \nHe writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. \nLike everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \nDar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she’s had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90’s Boston scene\, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers\, Berklee jazz musicians\, slam poets\, and folk artists\, like Patty Griffith\, Melissa Ferrick\, the Throwing Muses\, Vance Gilbert\, and Jonatha Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album\, The Honesty Room\, in 1994\, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. \n“Good and bad things happen\, and it’s not necessarily a reward or indictment. I’ve just got to meet it.” Williams observes. “Like\, I’m bringing my whole life to this moment; it will surprise me\, challenge me\, show me where I was wrong\, even make a fool out of me\, but my job is to show up and not take adversity personally. Real happiness doesn’t have to feel like Snoopy dancing with Woodstock; it can just be knowing you have the resilience to meet whatever comes to you. I will call that a good life.”

He is bringing in musicians from around southeast Michigan and beyond for a boogie and jazz blowout to kick off the holiday season with a big dose of boogie woogie joy. DESCRIPTION:Gemini is the much-loved duo of Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits. They’ve been performing since 1973 and are now playing music for the third—or is it fourth?—generation of young fans and families. They write and perform acoustic music for children and families\, celebrating with their audiences the warmth\, fun\, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event\, filled with rousing singalongs\, hand motion tunes\, folk tales\, and music from around the world. “If the Pied Piper had been twins\, chances are he would have been Gemini\,” says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents’ Choice Magazine\, the American Library Association\, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA)\, and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts. This is Gemini’s first live show at The Ark since the pandemic\, and it features Brian Brill on piano.
