Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nThe son of a small town farming community\, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow midwesterner John Prine\, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small town roots\, tilled with city streets mentality\, are turning heads North and South of I-80. \n“I love the energy\, music\, and creativity of Chicago\, but at the same time\, the roots and hard work of my small town\,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan\, Illinois\, with a population less than 2\,000\, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers\, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs.  \nHe writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan\, everyone has a story\, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way\,” he says. “My generation may have been labeled as slackers\, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t work hard – many people I know put in 50-60 hours a week and 12 hour days. That’s what keeps me playing. I don’t like anyone to be left out; my music is for everyone in big and very small towns.” \nHe listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams\, and it was a revelation. Prine and Guthrie quickly followed. The name Chicago Farmer was originally for a band\, but the utilitarian life of driving alone from bar to bar\, city to city – to make a direct connection to his audience and listener\, took a deeper hold.

Synthesizing their respective crafts within the walls of Philharmonie de Paris after being given access to the extraordinary instrument collection of the Musée de la Musique in partnership with the French label InFiné\, their new single\, “Perpetual Adoration\,” blends historical harps\, celestial synths\, and Barwick’s singular voice into an immersive electroacoustic soundscape of memory\, spirituality\, and timeless resonance. It is the first piece of new music from the duo since “Canyon Lights\,” a single released as part of 2021’s Adult Swim compilation\, Digitalis. \nTogether in improvised dialogue\, voice and instrument — Lattimore selecting an Érard double movement harp (France\, 1873) and Barwick behind a Sequential Circuits PROPHET-5 analog synthesizer (USA\, circa 1975) — the duo channels an immense volume of emotion drawn from a visit to Basilica of Sacré Cœur de Montmartre. On a rainy night\, they saw a sign outside the cathedral labeled “ADORATION PERPÉTUELLE” and entered the reverberant space where a nun was singing above organ drones during Sunday Mass. They carried the powerful scene with them into a session. The resulting performance honors both the moment and the history within their instruments: the gilded\, ornate Érard harp\, the first modern pedal harp\, remains open for innovation\, still carrying the simplest\, universally beautiful tone of human fingers on strings. The PROPHET-5 has shaped several decades of exploratory music\, and Barwick continues this legacy. Her skyward synth and vocal lines ascend alongside Lattimore’s tender harp strums\, creating a meditation on the restorative power of shared experience. \nOpener Fred Thomas is a songwriter\, producer\, and experimental musician living in Michigan. Over the past thirty years\, he’s consistently created new and evolving work\, touring internationally on a regular basis and releasing albums with Polyvinyl\, K Records\, Type\, Slumberland\, and many others. His music changes from project to project\, sometimes taking the form of literate narrative indie rock\, and sometimes veering towards soft ambient synthesizer sounds.

Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members\, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals\, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz\, blues rock\, folk\, swamp pop\, Zydeco\, country and bluegrass\, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans\, to Carnegie Hall\, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England. \nTheir most recent album was titled “From Bamako to Carencro\,” alluding the cultural and migratory connection between Bamako\, in Mali\, West Africa\, and Louisiana (symbolized in name by the Lafayette\, LA suburb of Carencro)\, a connection that draws a sonic bloodline back to BeauSoleil’s roots. Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with “L’amour Ou La Folie” (their Traditional Folk Album – 1998) and then a second Grammy in 2010\, “Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival”\, BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades\, including twelve GRAMMY nominations. They are regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show A Prairie Home Companion\, where Keillor has dubbed them as “the best Cajun band in the world\,” and their music is so integral to the Cajun culture that they have been featured on the New Orleans–based hit HBO program “Treme”. Once upon a time there was a teenage boy working on his family farm in apartheid South Africa. The year was 1960. This boy loved to sing\, in fact he loved to sing so much that he allowed himself an impossible dream. In his dream he would create a group of singers\, from his family members\, to sing traditional South African songs. His group would perform all over South Africa and they would become the greatest music group his country would ever know. How could such a dream come to a young farm boy in a country rife with hardship\, violence and trouble? Well\, Joseph Shabalala was this young farm boy and his dream would become Ladysmith Black Mambazo.  \nThe year 2025 marks the 65th anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group would not only conquer all of South Africa\, but would become a worldwide phenomenon\, winning more GRAMMY Awards (Five)\, and receiving more GRAMMY Award nominations (Nineteen)\, than any World Music group in the history of recorded music.  \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of peaceful protest through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison\, in 1990\, he said that Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music was a powerful message of peace that he listened to while in jail. When Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize\, in 1993\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.”  \nThe group sings a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Mee-Ya)\, which developed in the mines of South Africa. It was there that black workers were taken to work far away from their homes and families. Poorly housed and paid\, the mine workers would entertain themselves\, after a six-day work week\, by singing songs into the wee hours on Saturday night and Sunday. When the miners returned to their homes\, this musical tradition returned with them.  \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album – a landmark recording considered seminal in introducing World Music to mainstream audiences. This brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world\, the beginning of a global musical career that shows no sign of ending.  \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala. Having joined their father’s group in 1993\, their many years of training had prepared them in ways no others could be trained. Now\, carrying their father’s dream into the future\, the Shabalala Family continues the group’s success for the world to hear.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nGrant Flick is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, educator\, and collaborative artist currently based in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. While his main instrument is violin he typically inhabits spaces where it is not uncommon to find him playing nyckelharpa\, tenor guitar\, mandolin\, or just about any other fifth-tuned stringed instrument. He lives fluidally between idioms/genres with a focus on original instrumental music primarily influenced by American improvisational idioms (bluegrass\, jazz\, new acoustic music\, etc.)\, the music of Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli\, and chamber music both new and old. His most recent album “The Great Door” showcases his writing style in a quartet featuring entirely original material. \nGrant believes that instrumental music is a medium of thought that has the power to express ideas that words cannot define. He loves to collaborate with others in this artform. You can hear him play with projects such as his duo with outstanding bassist Jacob Warren creatively titled “Warren & Flick\,” his unique original quartet “Westbound Situation\,” or transatlantic inspired fiddling duos with Hannah O’Brien. The work of these projects is documented on albums such as “Cormorant” (Warren & Flick)\, “Accord” (Westbound Situation)\, and “Unmatched Pair” (Hannah O’Brien & Grant Flick).  \nThis performance will be a celebration of Grant’s latest release “The Great Door”.

DESCRIPTION:On her third album with Oh Boy Records\, and her fifth since beginning her career a decade ago\, Emily Scott Robinson once again unveils her mastery as a performer and storyteller. With her 2026 release Appalachia — recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios with Grammy-nominated producer Josh Kaufman — Robinson opens herself up to experimentation and sings in her crystal-clear voice about resilience\, love\, grief and hope. \nRobinson’s talent is no surprise to the music industry — she’s now a veteran touring artist\, both at home and abroad. Her records Traveling Mercies (2019) and American Siren (2021) each landed high on Rolling Stone’s “Best Country and Americana Albums” and Stereogum’s “10 Best Country Albums” year-end lists. She’s been lauded by the Washington Post\, Billboard\, American Songwriter and No Depression\, and earned the 19th spot on NPR’s “100 Best Songs of 2021” with her song “Let ‘Em Burn.” \nIt was her 2020 release “The Time for Flowers\,” an anthem of hope recorded at home in the midst of the global pandemic\, that caught the attention of Oh Boy Records\, the independent label founded by John Prine in 1981. Robinson jumped at the opportunity to join the free-spirited and beloved record label carrying on her hero’s legacy. \nRobinson believes the songs on Appalachia are the best she’s ever written — she sings about her grandmother slipping into dementia\, a cash-only saloon full of characters\, and gratitude for life\, despite its hardships. The album features a duet with Grammy winner John Paul White that celebrates the kind of  love that comes with scars and age\, and a hymn for anyone who’s ever failed or fallen short. \n“There’s this thing I do with every record I make\,” she says. “I knit a prayer into it\, and I ask for all these songs to find their way to everyone who needs them.
