SUMMARY:Iris DeMent
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of 14 children\, Iris DeMent was born in Paragould\, Arkansas\, and moved to California with her devoutly religious family when she was three. As a teenager she absorbed the country music of Loretta Lynn\, Merle Haggard\, and Johnny Cash\, as well as the folk classics of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Her 1992 debut album\, “Infamous Angel\,” distilled these influences into a poetic yet down-to-earth songwriting style. With a heartfelt\, homespun voice that listeners recognize instantly\, Iris released some of the most powerful roots albums of the 1990s with the beautifully sparse “My Life” and the harder-edged “The Way I Should.” She has continued to make powerful and distinctive albums on her own schedule\, and her latest\, just out\, is “Workin’ on a World.” This striking collection of songs faces the modern world—as it is right now—with its climate catastrophe\, pandemic illness\, and epidemic of violence and social injustice. The album not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world\, but implores us to love each other\, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. \nNote early start time!

SUMMARY:Nadim Azzam
DESCRIPTION:You’ve got to hurt to heal. Through painfully honest self-reflection\, Nadim Azzam addresses depression\, addiction\, and the dysfunctional realities of our times with his songs rooted in hope and connectivity. A singer\, rapper\, and songwriter who makes his own beats and plays multiple instruments on his tracks\, Nadim has spent years evolving to where his music is today. \nA symbiosis of programmed drums and organic live instruments creates a warm\, sometimes surreal sonic environment. Smooth keys\, angular guitars\, and lush synth pads swim alongside melodic vocal hooks and bars that waste no time getting straight to the heart of things. The energy is chill\, friendly and open-hearted\, but the songs open up from this unassuming approach into statements of vulnerability and bracing honesty. Nothing is hidden\, and nothing is off-limits. Graceful vocals and smiling lyrical flows reveal a personal truth that’s sometimes almost hard to look at but always comes from a search for real understanding. \nMaking songs for the deep-thinkers\, the over-drinkers\, and other sensitive souls\, Nadim faces his own struggles head-on in hopes of offering some sense of solace to anyone else walking similar valleys of their own. These songs seek to remind that there’s more to life\, and that the pain any given individual feels can be transformed from a solitary torment into a vessel of connection. \nOpener Mark Zhu (pronounced “Joo”) addresses relationships\, mental health\, and identity with his songs rooted in healing and emotional vulnerability. A Chinese American singer-songwriter\, music producer\, mix engineer\, pianist\, and designer from Ann Arbor\, Mark is making waves at the University of Michigan. There\, he studies computer engineering by day and plays shows by night\, building his career as an aspiring recording and touring artist. As an award-winning pianist who has performed at Carnegie Hall three times\, Mark leverages his classical training to drive his production skills\, blending genres to create piano-driven ballads\, synth-driven R&B\, and fearless pop anthems.

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

If ticket buyers are unable to attend on the rescheduled date\, a refund may be requested from the original point of purchase until 8/12/24. \nPeter Yarrow co-wrote “Puff\, the Magic Dragon\,” and by any measure he’s one of America’s most beloved folk singers. He’s been active in changing the wider world as well\, and he has never slowed down since the birth of Peter\, Paul & Mary during the Kennedy administration. In 1969 he was one of the organizers of the antiwar March on Washington. In support of the rights of Jews in the former Soviet Union he wrote the anthem “Don’t Let the Light Go Out.” In 2000 he founded Operation Respect\, a set of school and camp curricula designed to promote a culture of tolerance and respect. Peter’s recent appearances have emphasized music as a shared message and an antidote to mean-spiritedness and intolerance.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Pinnell
DESCRIPTION:When Jeremy Pinnell released OH/KY in the summer of 2015 to stunned acclaim\, it felt like an entire career compressed into one knock-out album. Hailed as\, a “Mind-blowingly good” (Greg Vandy/KEXP) “ ”tutorial on classic country music” (Popmatters)\, Pinnell’s debut immediately differentiated as authentic and unflinching. His 2017 album\, Ties of Blood and Affection presented a canny lateral move. Instead of doubling down on the stark themes and values of his debut\, the sophomore album found Pinnell finding comfort in his own skin\, achieving the redemption only hinted at in his previous batch of haunted songs.  \nIf the third time’s a charm\, Pinnell is all shine and sparkle on Goodbye LA. Produced by Texan Jonathan Tyler\, the tunes buff the wax and polish the chrome on Country music’s deeper roots. Rooted in his steady acoustic guitar\, Pinnell’s songs are shot through with honest and classic elements. Honest and careworn\, Jeremy’s voice can touch on wry\, jubilant\, and debauched – all in a single line.  At his best\, Jeremy Pinnell chronicles the joy and sorrow of being human\, which is the best that anyone could do.

DESCRIPTION:Al Bettis was inspired to start writing and singing music at age 30. He felt a spiritual calling to heal the world through music\, so he picked up a guitar and a notepad and got to work. The self-trained acoustic guitarist has gained popularity for his smooth vocals and sincere lyrics. His shows are a journey through love\, heartbreak and redemption as he offers stories about the musings behind many of his songs. His soothing voice is reminiscent of legends like Al Green and Otis Redding\, with musical influence from artists such as Ed Sheeran and Jason Mraz. \n

SUMMARY:South For Winter
DESCRIPTION:With a blend of dreamy acoustic duets\, foot-stomping folk and bluesy murder ballads\, New Zealand-formed and Nashville-based South for Winter’s sound is as eclectic as their origins. The band is composed of New Zealander Nick Stone\, Coloradan Dani Cichon\, and Michigander Alex Stradal\, and together the three multi-instrumentalists and songwriters combine elements such as cello\, guitar\, mandolin\, suitcase stomp\, and three-part harmonies into a genre-bending sound described by American Songwriter as “impeccable.”

SUMMARY:Johnny A. ***Cancelled***
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this show has been cancelled. Tickets have been refunded through the original point of purchase. \nThe name ‘Johnny A.’ might not be so mainstream\, but there’s no doubt that it’s synonymous with guitar. His passion began at the age of thirteen\, when he first saw the Beatles in Boston\, followed two years later by an in-person witnessing of Jimi Hendrix. From there\, he was hooked\, getting a cheap beginner guitar to try and play along with his early heroes — which also included Yardbirds icons Eric Clapton\, Jeff Beck\, and Jimmy Page. Soon enough\, Johnny A. got it.\n\nBy the 1970’s\, he was forming bands in the New England area\, drawing attention from several established musicians\, like Derek and the Dominos’ keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Johnny A. became Music Director of J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf’s outfit\, coordinating the onstage arrangements\, playing on several tours and co-producing Wolf’s 1996 album\, *Long Line.* What’s more\, he was even asked to join The Yardbirds as their lead guitarist in 2015.\n\nAll this is to say that Johnny A. has the chops\, and that’s not to mention his prolific solo career. Spanning three full-length albums\, Johnny A. has earned a Grammy Award nomination\, the honor of Boston Music Awards\, “Blues Artist of the Year 2010\,” and a spot in the revered Boston Music Hall of Fame. Ever the restless spirit\, Johnny A. continues to glide across genres effortlessly\, exploring elements of jazz\, soul. He still fervently carries on the tradition of the legends he respected as a teen.

Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \n6:00 Phillip-Michael Scales \nAs a kid\, Phillip-Michael Scales didn’t understand what it meant that his aunt’s close friend\, the guitar player who called him “Nephew” and he called “Uncle B\,” was B.B. King. Once Phillip-Michael began guitar lessons\, the significance became so clear that he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead\, he fell in love with songwriting when an English teacher told him “A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone.” When his Uncle B passed away\, Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music as a way to honor him. “These days I’m finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics\, my identity\, and the idea of Legacy.” The result is a sound he calls “Dive Bar Soul” which takes a bit of indie rock storytelling and couples it with the passion of the blues. \n7:30 Joe and The Ruckus \nThe Ruckus is a collective with the goal of recontextualizing classic funk and soul music within our 21st century world. They formed during the pandemic and emerged from lock-down as changed people in search of new live music experiences from those typically seen pre-pandemic. The Ruckus rose to and surpassed that expectation\, providing electrifying live concerts with repertoire ranging from the father of funk\, James Brown\, to the king of soul\, Stevie Wonder\, and beyond into more modern artists and have now expanded from their hometown to NYC\, Chicago and Detroit.  \n
