SUMMARY:Marcia Ball
DESCRIPTION:“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says Texas-born\, Louisiana-raised pianist\, songwriter and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career. Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. Her rollicking Texas boogies\, swampy New Orleans ballads and groove-laden Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world.  \nWith each new release\, her reputation as a profoundly soulful singer\, a boundlessly talented pianist\, and a courageous\, inventive songwriter continues to grow. Her love of the road has led to years of soul-satisfying performances at festivals\, concert halls and clubs. The New York Times says\, “Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky\, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.” The Houston Chronicle says simply\, “She’s as perfect as an artist can be.” \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Blue LLama Jazz Club

SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nNamed for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh\, Lúnasa was formed in 1997 from members of some of the greatest Irish groups of the previous decade\, an early review from Folk Roots magazine describing the band as an “Irish music dream team.” From the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Critical acclaim followed\, The Irish Echo describing the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”; MOJO magazine named the band “the new gods of Irish music\,” adding that “nobody since the Bothies has wielded such a thrilling rhythmic underlay.” Billboard raved that “anybody who listens can’t help but find them contagious.”  \nHaving since sold over a quarter of a million records and performed over 2\,500 shows across 36 countries\, Lunasa has won multiple awards and become one of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music.  Collaborations with singers Natalie Merchant\, Mary-Chapin Carpenter\, and Tim O’Brien and high-profile concerts at The Hollywood Bowl\, New York’s Carnegie Hall\, Glastonbury Festival and Bercy Arena Paris helped broaden the band’s audience and cement its place at the forefront of contemporary Irish music.

SUMMARY:The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. \nHaving gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. Whether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Lume Cannabis Co.

SUMMARY:Billy King
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nAs a seasoned performer\, songwriter\, and recording artist\, Billy King’s presence in the independent music scene brings an original blend of rootsy folk/pop with an occasional touch of country swing. \nIn the early 1990s\, Billy led his two-member band\, the preteen King Brothers\, to local fame in the Ann Arbor area\, performing regularly and releasing five albums of mostly original material. Still living and working on the family farm\, Billy has continued writing and recording\, and\, with his brother\, started Holler Fest\, a three-day music festival featuring Michigan artists. \nBilly’s versatility as a multi-genre singer-songwriter is matched by his ability on a wide range of instruments from guitar and banjo to keyboards and accordion.  \nWithin the songwriting community\, he is well-known for his musicianship and originality. In 2007\, his composition\, “I Don’t Write Love Songs\,” was awarded the Grand Prize in the Great Lakes Songwriting Contest. Influenced by master songwriters such as Bob Dylan\, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon\, Billy crafts melodically compelling songs that maintain a sense of the timeless and classic. Sometimes catchy folk/rock\, sometimes searing blues\, but always direct and thoughtful lyrics – this is original music from an original life\, fully accomplished yet humble\, and most of all real.

SUMMARY:Mike Farris
DESCRIPTION:Mike Farris is an artist’s artist and a musician’s musician\, celebrated and revered by his fellow performers. He is a GRAMMY\, Americana Association\, and Dove Music award winner\, with six solo albums since 2001. He is also a founding member of 90’s mainstream rock group\, The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. \nFor The Sound of Muscle Shoals\, Mike Farris’s first album since 2018’s Silver & Stone\, Farris made the pilgrimage that many soul shakers and stirrers have made before him\, across the O’Neal Bridge and over the Tennessee River\, straight into the creative vortex of Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, and right up to the door of the legendary Fame Studios. \nThe result of that pilgrimage is The Sound of Muscle Shoals. It’s the culmination of all of Farris’s musical influences and life lessons learned\, captured in a location that holds deep meaning for him\, in creative collaboration with members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and other session stalwarts of ‘The Shoals’ recording scene: Clayton Ivey (keys)\, Will McFarlane\, Kelvin Holly\, Wes Sheffield (guitars)\, Jimbo Hart (bass)\, and Justin Holder (drums). Collectively\, they capture lightning in a bottle\, channeling the spirit of their musical forebearers.

SUMMARY:Joy Clark
DESCRIPTION:Louisiana born-and-raised singer-songwriter and guitarist Joy Clark is charting her own path with her debut album “Tell it to the Wind.” As the youngest of five children born into a tight knit\, deeply religious family just outside of New Orleans\, her release is both a declaration of her independence and a love letter to the traditions that shaped her. \nJoy’s songcraft\, paired with sophisticated progressions\, and themes of freedom\, love and self-acceptance gained her notice on the national folk and Americana scenes just a few years ago with appearances at Americanafest. Joy teamed up with one of her musical heroes\, 4x Grammy-nominated Margaret Becker\, to make her debut album. “Tell it to the Wind” marks Clark’s arrival on the national stage as a proud\, queer\, Black woman blending the social consciousness of folk\, the rhythms of Southeast Louisiana\, and the soul-centered music she grew up with.

SUMMARY:Martha Wainwright
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nTo celebrate the 20th anniversary of her seminal eponymous debut studio album\, Martha Wainwright announces the 20th Anniversary Tour\, hitting North America in the Spring of 2025.  \n“20 years ago my life as an artist took shape when my first record was released. In many ways that record defined me\, as well as launched me into a now over 20 year long career that has made me who I am. It was after 10 years of playing in bars\, making cassettes and EPs to sell at my shows\, singing backup for my brother Rufus\, falling in love and out of love and in again\, practicing\, writing\, singing until I could barely sing anymore\, partying\, walking for hours and hours\, crying and laughing with friends\, playing with musicians and listening to great artists working with my ex-husband in the studio for 2 years that created this first record.  \nLabels wouldn’t sign me when I started and I had to craft\, with the help of many people\, an album that would finally be licensed and released in 2005. My first record tells my story and when it was finally released I was able to work and tour and have a career in music – something that I always wanted but wasn’t sure would happen. 20 years later\, with 6 other albums under my belt\, 2 kids and a career that is chugging along\, I can safely say that my first record paved my way forward and I’m very proud of it and still sing many of these early songs.  \nOn March 21st we will release the record on vinyl for the first time ever\, as well as digitally release unheard songs\, outtakes and early material from that 10 year period of discovery that led to my first record. And along with the re-release there will be a tour (with more dates being announced soon)\, with a few great musicians\, where I’ll play the record in its entirety as well as a few new songs – there’s no 48 year old me without the 28 year old me.  \nWith love and gratitude\, \nMartha”

SUMMARY:Newberry & Verch
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nGrowing up\, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. Although they are on the road much of the year\, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick\, because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go. \nJoe Newberry comes from a family of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a boy and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. In a Newberry & Verch show\, delighted audiences see first-hand the roots of their music\, their love of performing\, and their strong musical connection. Original songs join timeless classics. Stories warm the heart\, and give audiences a chance to understand where the music comes from. \nKnown around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing\, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist\, singer and songwriter. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise\,” featuring guest vocalist Ricky Skaggs\, won the 2012 IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award. With Eric Gibson\, he shared the 2013 IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” A longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, he was a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions 2016 tour of the U.K.\, and at the Transatlantic Session’s debut at Merlefest in 2017.  \nBefore launching her professional career\, Verch was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships. In 2000\, she formed “The April Verch Band\,” and together they have toured the world\, performing in 18 different countries. She has released 14 solo recordings to date\, receiving JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music and Independent Music nominations and awards for several of those releases. Verch was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver\, as part of a segment called “Fiddle Nation” featured in the Opening Ceremonies. \nWhether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony\, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move\, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And\, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one\, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place.

SUMMARY:Will Hoge
DESCRIPTION:Will Hoge has a career whose milestones include Number One hits\, Grammy nods\, major-label record deals\, and hard-won independence. Years before Americana music received its own category at the Grammy Awards\, Hoge was on the frontlines\, helping to pilot and popularize the genre’s blend of American roots music. In the current digital era dominated by influencers seeking shortcuts to stardom\, Will Hoge proudly treads the scenic route\, immersing himself in the journey rather than fixating on the destination. \nDue to a scheduled construction project which will impact The Ark’s building on Main Street\, our show with Will Hoge and special guest Scott Terry on Thursday\, March 27 is being moved to a new location. Many thanks to our friends at Kerrytown Concert House for making their space available – we are delighted with this opportunity to partner with them for this show and to jointly celebrate their 40th anniversary and our 60th.

SUMMARY:Mustard's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:May 1975. It seemed inevitable. Libby Glover\, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich had been informally jamming with each other for 3 months in the Rathskellar of the Old Heidelberg Restaurant in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. The room had grown consistently packed with enthusiastic fans every weekend. They all agreed it was time the trio made it official and chose the name Mustard’s Retreat\, which was a tune David had written.  \nMustard’s Retreat has always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about\, regardless of the trends of the music industry and pop culture. They are committed to simply being themselves\, not chasing fame or brass rings\, while delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them\, and that is as true now as it was then. They’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6\,000 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. \nTheir performances are always joyful and uplifting\, as well as intelligent\, thought provoking and insightful. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career\, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them. “Folk music is\, at its heart\, defiantly hopeful!” Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. We care much more about what we do and stand for and finding that common ground with our audiences\, than fame or money: this is our community of choice\, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here.” \nNote early start time of 7:30!

SUMMARY:John Gorka
DESCRIPTION:The modern renaissance of folk music began when John Gorka won the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk award in 1984\, and it grew to maturity when he released his debut album\, “I Know\,” three years later. Here was a singer-songwriter with a striking baritone voice that made you feel like you’d been hearing it all your life. Hailing from New Jersey\, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene\, he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy\, wry\, insightful\, and yes\, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits\, and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did\, and the new ones are just as good.

SUMMARY:John R. Miller
DESCRIPTION:John R Miller is a true hyphenate artist: singer-songwriter-picker. Every song on his thrilling upcoming debut solo album\, Depreciated\, is lush with intricate wordplay and haunting imagery\, as well as being backed by a band that is on fire.  One of his biggest long-time fans is roots music favorite Tyler Childers\, who says he’s “a well-travelled wordsmith mapping out the world he’s seen\, three chords at a time.” Miller is somehow able to transport us to a shadowy honkytonk and get existential all in the same line with his tightly written compositions. Miller’s own guitar-playing is on fine display here along with vocals that evoke the white-waters of the Potomac River rumbling below the high ridges of his native Shenandoah Valley.

SUMMARY:Explosions in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Explosions in the Sky are an iconic instrumental rock band from Texas that have become the gold standard for bold\, emotional\, cinematic music and are known for their incendiary live concerts. They’ve slowly grown from playing DIY spaces and opening for Fugazi to having headlined Radio City Music Hall\, Royal Albert Hall\, the Greek Theatre\, and the Sydney Opera House. Over 24 years of being a band (with the same four members the entire time)\, they’ve achieved remarkable commercial success from an especially non-commercial corner of the music world\, selling more than 1.3 million copies over six studio albums\, and scoring five major motion pictures in the process. They’ve become the sound of modern sports films\, documentaries and television\, due largely to their genre-defining Friday Night Lights score\, and they’ve been asked to tour with artist fans as diverse as Nine Inch Nails\, Smashing Pumpkins\, The Flaming Lips\, and Death Cab for Cutie\, while managing to not sound like any other popular artist.

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nTickets will be available at the door. There are no advance ticket sales for this show.
