His music comes from the essence of this city and from the music\, influences and folklore of different parts of the world. His original and unprecedented approach to his music and his instrument has made him one of the most relevant artists in the world of acoustic guitar. His compositions combine folk\, flamenco\, Celtic and classical melodies\, creating an emotional and multicultural experience. \nWith his third album “Ikigai” \, released in April 2022\, Romero reached #28 on the Transglobal World Music Chart . Ikigai is an ode to Spanish folklore and its crossover with Atlantic folks\, composed and performed on a steel-string guitar. By some accounts\, contests celebrating liars have been around since the 15th century\, but these accounts may be apocryphal. Today\, liars contests are held in countries all around the globe. \nThe Third Annual Liar’s Contest at The Ark includes six first-class liars and three judges. This year’s liars are Jennifer Otto\, Rich Swanson\, Lou Ann Holman\, Darryl Mickins\, and Mike Cox. The chaos wrangler and MC will once again be the amazing Amir Baghdadchi.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nFeatured storytellers this year are Yasu Ishida and Elizabeth Ellis.  \nCombining traditional Japanese theatre\, music\, origami\, magic\, and storytelling; Yasu Ishida will guide you to the enchanting land of Japan. ​Yasu has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre for Young Audiences and has been performing all around the county\, including the Disney Summer Stage Kids (NY)\, the National Cherry Blossom Festival (Washington D.C.)\, to the Hawaii Music & Book Festival. \nElizabeth Ellis grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky. Her grandfather and aunt told both traditional stories and tales of their own creation. Her uncles were big raconteurs\, and every get together was a contest to see who could top the others. The Tejas Storytelling Association has recognized her work with the John Henry Faulk Award\, given for significant contribution to storytelling in their region. The National Storytelling Network has honored her with both the Circle of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of her artistry and service. \nThe Ark’s Storytelling Family Show is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nOne of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, Creole and Zydeco music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. Originally from San Felipe\, TX (population 868)\, Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston\, TX. Just two years later\, he moved to south Louisiana\, quickly immersing himself in French music and language. Cedric has performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups\, including the Pine Leaf Boys\, Corey Ledet\, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams\, and with his own group\, Bijou Creole. Cedric’s music resurrects the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa\, who were sold as slaves in the Caribbean and Louisiana by the French and Spanish.  \nRev. Robert Jones\, Sr. has been a professional musician for more than forty years. The legendary blues man\, Willie Dixon encouraged him to bring his music into schools over 35 years ago\, and The National Blues Foundation recognized his work as a leading blues educator in 2007. An award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, he is accomplished on guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle and ukulele. Robert is the former host of the award-winning radio programs “Blues from the Lowlands” and “Deep River” broadcast on Detroit Public Radio’s WDET-FM Detroit. He has taught music history courses at Wayne State University in Detroit\, and he serves as a member of the affiliate faculty at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. \nDedicated to the traditional sounds of Southwest Louisiana\, Creole du Nord delivers a lively Cajun & Zydeco groove featuring fiddle\, accordion and a rockin’ rhythm section “pour les bonne temps.” Bandleader Mark Palms traced his family roots to Breaux Bridge and now brings the uplifting spirit of Louisiana to the northern great lakes with Michigan’s finest; Billy King (gtr)\, Walter Prettyman (fid)\, Carol Palms (bass) & Pete Siers (drums).  After learning from some of Louisiana’s best… such as Joe Hall\, Steve Riley\, Blake Miller\, Jesse Lege\, Ray Abshire\, Walter Mouton and more\, Mark and the band Creole du Nord have been playing festivals\, dances\, and clubs across Michigan and the midwest. \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Blue LLama Jazz Club

Ever since\, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. \nFour-time Grammy-winner\, master slack key guitarist GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR.\, known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”\, is an award winning vocalist\, storyteller\, songwriter & author\, teacher\, sculptor\, farmer\, and chef\, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and named to the Maui Nui Hall of Fame in 2024. \nSlack Key Guitarist\, Hawaiian Steel Guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer\, SONNY LIM developed his guitar & vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Johnny Rees (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions: The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nThere are no advance ticket sales for tonight’s show. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) collectively comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. \nOld Blind Dogs are delighted to be joined by the brilliant fiddler Sarah Collins for this tour. Based in the Baltimore/DC area with deep roots in the Boston traditional music community\, Sarah spent part of her childhood in Edinburgh and though she grew up immersed in the Scottish music scene\, her playing today blends influences from the Scottish\, Irish and Old-Time fiddle styles. We are delighted to have her and she will be fantastic cover for original band member\, Jonny Hardie\, who is unable to join the band on this tour.

The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner\, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award. The band appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Show With David Letterman\,” “Conan O’Brien\,” “CBS This Morning\,” “Later…with Jools Holland\,” and “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in support of the album.  \nIn the years since the release\, the band left their beloved adopted home of Brooklyn and moved to Nashville. Now\, The Lone Bellow is back with Walk Into A Storm\, produced by legendary music producer Dave Cobb and featuring their lead single “Time’s Always Leaving.” The trio\, featuring Zach Williams (guitar/vocals)\, Kanene Donehey Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist)\, and Brian Elmquist (guitar)\, recorded this album in only seven days. A lover of ballads\, love songs and searing versions of social justice songs\, fond of a good yarn\, she has toured the world making deep connections with her audience connecting via Ireland’s past but crucially repositioning women and songs in a universal and a modern setting. \nKaran has been striking out lately to explore new areas of performance on the piano and with spoken word and theatre. She has released eleven albums as well as contributing to numerous other artists’ projects – appearing on more than 80 albums so far – and has toured extensively throughout North America\, Europe and Japan\, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with such diverse musicians as Maura O’Connell\, James Taylor\, Bela Fleck\, Boston Pops Orchestra\, The Chieftains\, The Dubliners\, Peggy Seeger\, Tim O’Brien\, and Solas. \nKaran’s first theatre show\, I Walked into My Head\, was premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021. 2022 saw Karan collaborate with composer Harry Escott on a version of the Irish ballad “Grace” for the film “Ali & Ava”. Karan’s newest album “Nine Apples of Gold” received extensive radio play on both sides of the Atlantic reaching No 1 on the US Folk radio charts for the month of March. Karan’s new stage show about women in the Irish revolutionary period\, The Women We Will Rise\, was premiered at the Everyman Theatre in Cork in September 2023.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nA free educational concert by Asiginaak-Negamojig (Blackbird Singers)\, a local Indigenous language and singing group. The group will sing and Stacie Sheldon\, co-founder of Ojibwe.net\, will provide background and teachings on Ojibwe language and culture. This event is free and open to the public with a catered lunch provided beforehand. It is sponsored by the Ann Arbor Public Schools.  \nLunch served 11:30\, program begins 12:30. \nAttendance is free\, but pre-registration is encouraged. \nPre-register here

DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. \nHaving gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. Whether at a joyous summer festival\, in their many shows across the country and beyond\, or in the studio\, The Steel Wheels continue their mission set out over a decade ago; shaking up traditions to see what sticks\, telling stories\, and joining communities through song. \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Lume Cannabis Co.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nAs a seasoned performer\, songwriter\, and recording artist\, Billy King’s presence in the independent music scene brings an original blend of rootsy folk/pop with an occasional touch of country swing. \nIn the early 1990s\, Billy led his two-member band\, the preteen King Brothers\, to local fame in the Ann Arbor area\, performing regularly and releasing five albums of mostly original material. Still living and working on the family farm\, Billy has continued writing and recording\, and\, with his brother\, started Holler Fest\, a three-day music festival featuring Michigan artists. \nBilly’s versatility as a multi-genre singer-songwriter is matched by his ability on a wide range of instruments from guitar and banjo to keyboards and accordion.  \nWithin the songwriting community\, he is well-known for his musicianship and originality. In 2007\, his composition\, “I Don’t Write Love Songs\,” was awarded the Grand Prize in the Great Lakes Songwriting Contest. Influenced by master songwriters such as Bob Dylan\, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon\, Billy crafts melodically compelling songs that maintain a sense of the timeless and classic. Sometimes catchy folk/rock\, sometimes searing blues\, but always direct and thoughtful lyrics – this is original music from an original life\, fully accomplished yet humble\, and most of all real.

SUMMARY:Mike Farris
DESCRIPTION:Mike Farris is an artist’s artist and a musician’s musician\, celebrated and revered by his fellow performers. He is a GRAMMY\, Americana Association\, and Dove Music award winner\, with six solo albums since 2001. He is also a founding member of 90’s mainstream rock group\, The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. \nFor The Sound of Muscle Shoals\, Mike Farris’s first album since 2018’s Silver & Stone\, Farris made the pilgrimage that many soul shakers and stirrers have made before him\, across the O’Neal Bridge and over the Tennessee River\, straight into the creative vortex of Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, and right up to the door of the legendary Fame Studios. \nThe result of that pilgrimage is The Sound of Muscle Shoals. It’s the culmination of all of Farris’s musical influences and life lessons learned\, captured in a location that holds deep meaning for him\, in creative collaboration with members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and other session stalwarts of ‘The Shoals’ recording scene: Clayton Ivey (keys)\, Will McFarlane\, Kelvin Holly\, Wes Sheffield (guitars)\, Jimbo Hart (bass)\, and Justin Holder (drums). Collectively\, they capture lightning in a bottle\, channeling the spirit of their musical forebearers.
