SUMMARY:David Howley (of We Banjo 3)
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nIndie folk artist from Ireland and founding member of Billboard No.1 band We Banjo 3\, David Howley has been at the forefront of Irish guitar\, banjo and mandolin for over a decade. An award-winning vocalist\, he has performed with The Chieftains\, Eileen Ivers\, Carlos Nunez\, Billy Strings\, Bela Fleck\, Altan\, Ajeet and Mumford & Sons\, amongst others.\n\nDavid’s first solo album has been called “a thing of rare beauty” by the Irish Times. The four star review of for Venus commends the album as pointing to “a richly creative period that he has embraced to the full. All of which augurs well for this album’s transition to live performance.”\n\nNow\, David Howley steps into his second album with the release of “Shadow\,” a song that reimagines the ancient tale of Eurydice and Orpheus. This track dives into the complexities of love and loss\, weaving a story that’s both timeless and deeply personal. With its upbeat rhythm and heartfelt lyrics\, “Shadow” showcases Howley’s knack for pairing profound narratives with spirited melodies. The song promises to draw listeners into a vibrant emotional journey\, one that exemplifies his ability to blend mythic storytelling with the raw realities of the human heart.\n\nRecorded in a tiny cabin in the town of Kenmare in County Kerry\, Ireland\, his new songs resonate with a wide range of audiences\, taking them to places undiscovered. With soulful vocals\, evocative storytelling\, and enchanting melodies\, he creates an otherworldly\, time-bending magic. Inspired by ancient legends and raw emotions\, Howley is a modern poet with traditional chops. Enter his unique musical imagination through indie folk’s depths\, where the dreamworld and daily life meet. \nJoining David will be his brother and “We Banjo 3” bandmate Martin Howley. A trailblazer in Irish mandolin and banjo\, a seven-time national champion and the first Irish banjo player to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Also the show will feature Michigan’s own Kiana June on fiddle. From rocking massive stages around the world to recording four Billboard #1 albums with Gaelic Storm and bringing the fiddle to Come From Away\, Kiana is a one-of-a-kind musician and fuses classical chops with American and Irish folk music!

SUMMARY:David Francey
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nDavid Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter. Born in Ayrshire\, Scotland to parents who were factory workers\, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades\, he worked across Canada in rail yards\, construction sites\, and in the Yukon bush\, all the while writing poetry\, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked.  \nA truly authentic folk singer\, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s\, his wife\, artist Beth Girdler\, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. \nSince then\, David has released thirteen albums\, won four Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band\, The Rankin Family\, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer. \nFrancey also had the honor of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award.

SUMMARY:Jake Blount\, Simon Chrisman\, and Nic Gareiss
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nJake Blount (pronounced: blunt\, they/he) is an award-winning interpreter of Black folk music based in Providence\, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician\, Blount has charted an unprecedented\, Afrofuturist course on his pilgrimage through sound archives and song collections. In his hands\, the banjo\, fiddle\, electric guitar and synthesizer become ceremonial objects used to channel the insurgent creativity of his forebears. From transfixing solo sets to full-band festival appearances complete with crowd-surfing and ecstatic chants\, Blount’s performances – like his recent Smithsonian Folkways release\, The New Faith – seamlessly merge centuries-old traditional songs with the trappings and techniques of modern Black genres. \nComposer and hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman (he/him) brings an unusual and path-breaking style to an instrument that has previously been thought to have limited range and technique\, combining “chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.” (The Boston Herald) His touch and sophisticated rhythmic sensibilities are redefining the instrument and earning the attention of musicians from all over the world. Based in Oregon\, he tours with Grammy-nominated Kittel and Co.\, the Bee Eaters\, and Wes Corbett. \nOne of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch\,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) has been hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance\, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog\, flatfoot\, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration. In this way Gareiss reimagines movement as a musical practice\, recasting percussive dance as a medium that queers the boundaries between sight\, sound\, and touch.

SUMMARY:Mustafa
DESCRIPTION:Dunya\, the title of Mustafa’s masterfully crafted and breathtakingly tender full-length debut\, roughly translates from Arabic to “the world in all its flaws.” It’s a lofty subject for a young songwriter\, but as with every theme at the heart of the Sudanese-Canadian artist’s work—from religious devotion to childhood trauma\, gang violence to romantic intimacy—he approaches it through a personal lens. Blending genres and moods\, weaving novelistic details into instantly memorable folk songs\, he has crafted a record that feels like a series of personal breakthroughs\, arriving one after the other.  \nThe first thing that strikes you about Mustafa’s music has always been his writing: a simple\, piercing tone that can make any story feel as raw and earnest as the words to a love song. With a hushed delivery that can silence his surroundings\, Mustafa evolved swiftly from a child prodigy reciting poems throughout his native Toronto to a behind-the-scenes pop songwriting force. On Dunya\, he becomes a full-on auteur in his own right.  \n“I’m trying to preserve and celebrate the ordinary life in the hood\,” Mustafa notes of his lyrical inspiration. Exploring his upbringing and trajectory onward\, these songs are equally disarming in their simplicity and multilayered in their emotional breadth. Featuring appearances from collaborators such as Aaron Dessner\, Rosalía\, Clairo\, Nicolas Jaar\, and more\, alongside Mustafa’s longtime creative partner Simon Hessmann\, the music reveals a confident\, distinctive voice that’s never sounded more poised for the masses. Even when it sounds like he’s taking on the world\, Mustafa is speaking only for himself: a story that he knows is just getting started.

SUMMARY:Masters of Hawaiian Music
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThree masters\, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned “Slack Key Show®” share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar and ‘ukulele\, with origins in the early 19th century when the ‘ukulele and the guitar were introduced to Hawai‘i by Portuguese immigrants and Mexican vaqueros\, respectively. Ever since\, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. \nFour-time Grammy-winner\, master slack key guitarist GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR.\, known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”\, is an award winning vocalist\, storyteller\, songwriter & author\, teacher\, sculptor\, farmer\, and chef\, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and named to the Maui Nui Hall of Fame in 2024. \nSlack Key Guitarist\, Hawaiian Steel Guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer\, SONNY LIM developed his guitar & vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. He was also one of the early members of the renowned Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau for whom he played lap steel guitar beginning at age 15. He performed on the first Grammy-winning CD in Hawaiian music\, and he was the first person to deliver a Grammy acceptance speech in his Native Hawaiian language. \n‘Ukulele virtuoso HERB OHTA JR’S natural talent\, knowledge\, technique\, and speed are unsurpassed. Herb’s versatility and ability to adapt to the changing times will captivate you\, the listener\, and transport you. While he enjoys all types of music\, Herb’s favorite songs to perform are ballads and all types of Hawaiian songs because they enhance the natural sound of the instrument. Herb’s style is distinct and recognizable as his own with a graceful “nahenahe” quality (gentle\, melodious\, emotionally evocative) that is very Hawaiian\, reflecting the inspirations of ‘ukulele greats that came before him.

SUMMARY:SCYTHIAN
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nNamed after Ukrainian nomads\, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays roots music from Celtic\, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions with thunderous energy\, technical prowess\, and storytelling songwriting. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Johnny Rees (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions: The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. Lafayette\, LA raised Johnny Rees brings a Cajun backbeat to the Celtic-Americana fusion giving Scythian yet another dimension which keeps audiences entertained and moving.  \nScythian is coming off its most prolific year in 2020 with over 1\,000 hours of live streams during the Covid Lockdowns\, release of two new albums (Roots & Stones and Quaranstream: The Album) and four new music videos. You have to catch the live show to understand why The Cammel City Dispatch said of their Merlefest performance: “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free\, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant\, but it is the energy that carries the day.”

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nThere are no advance ticket sales for tonight’s show. SUMMARY:Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) collectively comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. \nOld Blind Dogs are delighted to be joined by the brilliant fiddler Sarah Collins for this tour. Based in the Baltimore/DC area with deep roots in the Boston traditional music community\, Sarah spent part of her childhood in Edinburgh and though she grew up immersed in the Scottish music scene\, her playing today blends influences from the Scottish\, Irish and Old-Time fiddle styles. We are delighted to have her and she will be fantastic cover for original band member\, Jonny Hardie\, who is unable to join the band on this tour.

SUMMARY:Marcia Ball
DESCRIPTION:“Fifty years have passed in a flash\,” says Texas-born\, Louisiana-raised pianist\, songwriter and vocalist Marcia Ball of her long and storied career. Ball\, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year\, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nNamed for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh\, Lúnasa was formed in 1997 from members of some of the greatest Irish groups of the previous decade\, an early review from Folk Roots magazine describing the band as an “Irish music dream team.” From the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Critical acclaim followed\, The Irish Echo describing the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”; MOJO magazine named the band “the new gods of Irish music\,” adding that “nobody since the Bothies has wielded such a thrilling rhythmic underlay.” Billboard raved that “anybody who listens can’t help but find them contagious.”  \nHaving since sold over a quarter of a million records and performed over 2\,500 shows across 36 countries\, Lunasa has won multiple awards and become one of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music.  Collaborations with singers Natalie Merchant\, Mary-Chapin Carpenter\, and Tim O’Brien and high-profile concerts at The Hollywood Bowl\, New York’s Carnegie Hall\, Glastonbury Festival and Bercy Arena Paris helped broaden the band’s audience and cement its place at the forefront of contemporary Irish music.
