DESCRIPTION:The Wood Brothers didn’t know they were making a record. Looking back\, they’re grateful for that. \n“If we had known\, we probably would have been too self-conscious to play what we played\,” reflects bassist/vocalist Chris Wood. “At the time\, we just thought we were jamming to break in our new studio\, so we felt free to explore all these different ways of performing together without worrying about form or structure. It was liberating.” \nRecorded live to tape\, those freewheeling\, improvised sessions became a vast pool of source material from which The Wood Brothers would go on to draw ‘Kingdom In My Mind\,’ their seventh studio release and most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. While on past records\, the band—Chris\, guitarist/vocalist Oliver Wood\, and drummer/keyboardist Jano Rix—would write a large batch of songs and then record them all at once\, ‘Kingdom’ found them retroactively carving tunes out of sprawling instrumental jam sessions like sculptors chipping away at blocks of marble. A testament to the limitless creativity of the unharnessed mind\, the record explores the power of our external surroundings to shape our internal worlds (and vice versa)\, reckoning with time\, mortality\, and human nature. In his Sept 7\, 1995 review for Rolling Stone\, Bud Scoppa wrote: “He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.” Ron’s songwriting style evolved into a unique and timeless blend of classic pop\, contemporary folk\, and roots-rock idioms. He has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting heroes (Elton John\, Ray Davies\, John Prine\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney) for his characteristically honest\, sensitive\, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft. Ever since\, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. Four-time Grammy-winner and master slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr.\, known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man\,” is a multiple NaHōkū Hanohano (Hawaiian Grammy) Award winner\, a vocalist\, storyteller\, songwriter\, and author\, teacher\, sculptor\, farmer\, and chef\, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. “There’s something quite magical…about the evocative tones of a trusty ‘ukulele\,” says the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Caught It From The Ryeis an urgent missive from an important new voice in songwriting. \nFor a songwriter who thoughtfully documents what he sees in the world\, 2020\, while challenging\, was rich with inspiration. The year birthed the single\, Under The Devil’s Knee\, a song that continues the tradition of outspoken political folk songwritersof yore. It is an incredibly moving protest song tracing the lives of George Floyd\, Eric Garner\, and Breonna Taylor. Recorded remotely featuring Allison Russell\, Sunny War and Leyla McCalla. “Humanity feels like it’s slipping away from us\, as a country. Iwanted to reinstate the humanity of George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Eric Garner and so many other brothers and sisters slain by police in the way I know how. I wanted to immortalize their dignity and make the work easy for future historians and remind the present that no matter what side of the aisle you’re on\, this is about actual pain and real human suffering caused by a system of governance that is morally bankrupt. This\, I felt was my duty as an American songwriter to do. Music is a powerful force\, especially when you put it through a protest song. It makes the fight more tangible. Reframes perspective. None of which entered my mind when writing this\, at all. That was out of anger. I wrote this song out of anger. They should all be alive.” -Tré Burt

As one half of the acclaimed Americana duo The Potters Field\, Rochelle has offered powerful vocals that have been captivating audiences in Michigan and throughout the Midwest for years. Drawing on her roots in folk\, Americana\, and country\, Rochelle has found a sound that is uniquely her own. In January 2020 she released her first solo recording; an EP titled “In Time\,” and she’s continuing to explore her voice as a solo songwriter. At 15 he formed his first blues band\, Blue Vinyl. In short order they opened for blues greats like Buddy Guy (to whose work his playing has been compared)\, Luther Allison\, Son Seals\, and Taj Mahal and toured the Netherlands. At the University of Michigan\, Laith was a member of the Johnny Trudell Orchestra and freelanced with Detroit greats like Thornetta Davis\, Jocelyn B\, The Reefermen. Laith is a real road warrior who generally can be found playing at least five nights a week around Michigan and beyond\, and Michigan’s secret got out when he made the finals of television’s “The Voice.” If you haven’t checked out this monster Michigan talent yet\, you really should! Tonight Laith performs a rare solo show.

The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them\, and that is as true now as it was then. They’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6\,000 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career\, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them. “Folk music is\, at its heart\, defiantly hopeful!” founder David Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. Grammy-nominated banjoist Barry Abernathy joins forces with Grammy-winning fiddler Jim VanCleve (original founding members of the much beloved Mountain Heart!)\, fresh off of his recent stint touring with multi-platinum country artist Josh Turner\, as well as esteemed vocalist and mandolinist Darrell Webb\, who has recorded and toured with Dolly Parton and Rhonda Vincent\, among many others. The group also includes 26-year-old  “old soul” guitarist Zeb Snyder\, whose fierce and versatile playing recalls Doc Watson and Norman Blake as readily as it does Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nSince his earliest infatuations with guitar\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee\, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. He heard jazz in Ukraine\, blues from expat African Americans in Berlin. “Part of my intent\, making myself more comfortable with this release\, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues\,” guitarist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Buffalo Nichols explains. “Listening to this record\, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album\, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas\, and it marks a new stage of the blues.
