SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child\, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife\, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”\, says Richmond Magazine. \nVance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&B and jazz singer once at college\, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nVance’s new album\, “The Mother Of Trouble”\, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals\, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars\, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh.

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

SUMMARY:Susan Werner
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of her 25-year career\, Susan Werner has earned a reputation as “one of the most innovative songwriters working today” (Chicago Tribune). With formidable chops on guitar (she began playing at age five) and piano (she was a guest on NPR’s Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz)\, along with a graduate degree in voice performance\, she puts on shows that are a one-woman master class in musicianship. Although best known as an acoustic songwriter that came up through coffeehouses and folk festivals\, the Chicago-based artist has written songs in the style of Gershwin and Cole Porter (“I Can’t Be New\,” 2004)\, gospel music (“The Gospel Truth\,” 2007)\, traditional Cuban son (“An American In Havana\,” 2016)\, and New Orleans junk piano (“NOLA\,” 2019). In 2014 she composed the music and lyrics to the musical theater score Bull Durham\, The Musical (MGM). Her songs have been recorded by Tom Jones\, Michael Feinstein\, and Shemekia Copeland.

SUMMARY:Matt Andersen
DESCRIPTION:When Matt Andersen steps on stage\, he brings a lifetime of music to every note he plays. His latest album\, “The Big Bottle of Joy\,” is all about hard-won celebration; a dozen songs infused with raw blues-rock\, rollicking Americana\, thoughtful folk\, and ecstatic gospel. Andersen’s stage presence is informed by decades of cutting his teeth in dusty clubs\, dim-lit bars\, and grand theaters all over the world\, delivering soulful performances that run the gamut from intimate to wall-shaking. In the studio\, he’s always brought the same attention to detail and commitment to craft as he has to his live show\, and the result – a multi-faceted and poignant body of work – has led him to amass over 28 million streams on Spotify and 26 million views on YouTube.

SUMMARY:Peter Madcat Ruth's 75th Birthday Celebration Concert
DESCRIPTION:Madcat’s music has been evolving for over 60 years. It started in the Chicago area in the early 1960s\, with Madcat playing folk/blues on guitar and harmonica. By the late 1960s he had immersed himself in the Chicago Blues and was studying harmonica with Big Walter Horton. In the early 1970s\, Madcat moved to Ann Arbor\, where he was a key presence in two of Ann Arbor’s finest progressive rock bands: New Heavenly Blue and Sky King. By the mid 1970s Madcat was touring the world with jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. In the 1980s\, Madcat went solo infusing the folk/blues tradition with elements of rock and jazz. In 1990\, Madcat teamed up with guitarist/singer Shari Kane to form the duo Madcat & Kane. For twenty-four years\, they toured nationally and internationally. \nTonight’s celebration features Peter Madcat Ruth’s C.A.R.Ma. Quartet with John Churchville on tabla\, Brennan Andes on bass\, and guitarist Dan Ripke. Special guests include Rachael Davis\, Seth Bernard\, and Nashville based harmonica virtuoso Buddy Greene. \nNote early start time!

SUMMARY:William Fitzsimmons
DESCRIPTION:The Sparrow & The Crow – 15th Anniversary Tour \nWilliam Fitzsimmons is an indie troubadour from Illinois whose eight studio albums explore themes of joy\, heartbreak\, loss\, and connection. The child of two blind parents\, Fitzsimmons was introduced to music at a very young age and quickly developed ability in several instruments. Primarily raised on the folk records of the 60s and 70s\, he makes music that leans heavily on the intimate\, vulnerable\, and acoustic\, always inviting the listener into a rare emotional space. \nThe Sparrow and the Crow 15th Anniversary Tour is a celebration of his critically acclaimed third album; hailed by iTunes as the “best folk album of 2008.” Written after his first divorce\, the record is a beautiful walk through love\, loss\, and healing. William will embark on a 30-city tour of the US playing the record in its entirety for the first time\, in intimate settings armed only with his voice and acoustic guitar\, in addition to other fan favorite songs from his catalog.

SUMMARY:Jackie Greene
DESCRIPTION:Americana and roots singer-songwriter Jackie Greene is a jack-of-all-trades and an artist who can croon over soulful piano ballads as much as he can shred a bluesy guitar solo. Since the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Gone Wanderin’\,’ Greene has built an enduring audience through a relentless touring schedule with the likes of BB King\, Mark Knopfler\, Susan Tedeschi\, and Taj Mahal. He played lead guitar with The Black Crowes on their Layin’ Down With #13 World Tour\, recorded and toured with Trigger Hippy – his supergroup with Joan Osborne – and in the last four years performed over 300 shows of his own\, all while continuing to record and release his solo work. Greene is a frequent member of Phil Lesh & Friends\, and sits in with countless other artists including Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Govt Mule\, Mississippi All-Stars\, Amy Helm\, Steve Earle\, and Bob Weir. \nOpening is Cousin Curtiss. Think “blues at bluegrass speeds.”

SUMMARY:Raul Malo
DESCRIPTION:When Raul Malo came on the scene as the lead singer of The Mavericks\, he already had a sound that didn’t fit the usual categories\, and a luxuriant voice that brought to mind Roy Orbison. The Mavericks were a country band\, but there was always more to the Mavericks than country: a Latin tinge\, seriously ambitious songwriting\, and a big dose of pure pop passion. For Raul Malo\, The Mavericks were just the beginning of an American musical journey. He has sung in English and Spanish\, and he’s at home with rock\, country\, Cuban music\, and the big-band jazz that fits his romantic vocals so beautifully. He’s sung Latin rock\, acoustic Americana\, and even children’s music. And his voice has only improved with age. It’s a stunning instrument that has the rare quality of being big and intimate at the same time. The Ark has been an ideal venue for Raul’s solo shows\, which are more personal than the music he’s made with The Mavericks\, and his Ark shows over the past decade have lingered in the memories of listeners and the club staff alike. Raul comes to Michigan with a new solo instrumental album\, “Say Less.”

SUMMARY:Hot Club of Cowtown
DESCRIPTION:The Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown explores the space where early jazz met Texas swing\, where Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang met Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. Guitarist Whit Smith and fiddler Elana James have become a world-class country-jazz duo\, challenging each other and reading each other’s minds at every turn. This is virtuoso small-group western swing that’s beyond infectious. If you’ve seen the Hot Club before\, be advised that they’re only getting better—they went on hiatus\, got back together\, and came out of it stronger. By now they’re one of the great improvising bands in any genre. Robin Denselow of the London Guardian praises the Hot Club for “spirit\, originality\, and skill that would surely have impressed Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt back in the 1930s.”

SUMMARY:The Brother Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Brother Brothers are the indie folk duo of Adam and David Moss. The identical twins were born and raised in Peoria\, Illinois and originally based in Brooklyn\, but have been ultimately and profoundly shaped by a life surrounded by travel and the web of community worldwide. They are the kind of people who have a story about everything\, and moreso\, one you might genuinely like to hear.  \nAmerican Songwriter once said\, “no matter what musical context Adam and David Moss may come to put themselves in\, what the duo want to say through music will always come to show the beauty that exists—even in the deepest cracks—of human living.” Proclaims No Depression\, “the warm harmonies and silky melodies of identical twins David and Adam Moss evoke the kind of ’60s-era folk tunes that reverberated through dark\, wood-paneled bars in the Village… If these brothers aren’t among the Americana Music Association’s nominees for Emerging Artist or Duo-Group\, I want a recount.” \nThe Brother Brothers come to The Ark with a new album\, “The January Album.”

SUMMARY:Frontier Ruckus
DESCRIPTION:Since the release of their 2008 debut album\, the songs of Frontier Ruckus have delivered a singularly detailed representation of the glorious yet grim minutiae of Midwestern suburban life. The obsessively crafted lyrical world of songwriter Matthew Milia is brought to life by David Jones and Zachary Nichols whose instrumental contributions serve as colorfully instinctive extensions. From stages at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo to the intimate living rooms of fans\, this magnetic chemistry has helped Frontier Ruckus garner a dedicated following across the United States and Europe.  \nFrontier Ruckus have just released their new album On the Northline via Loose Music. Their first full length release since 2017’s Enter The Kingdom\, the new record exemplifies the group’s intricate orchestral folk pop sound which has endeared them to fans nationwide\, backdropping guitarist/singer/lyricist Matthew Milia’s poetic observations on the mundane and the holy. \nPremium Rat\, a singer songwriter with punk tendencies\, opens.

SUMMARY:Cheryl Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers\, with fans of the New England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There is poet Cheryl\, writer of some of the prettiest\, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin\, comic Cheryl\, a trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a series of delightful contrasts\, for really Cheryl Wheeler is a woman of many musical personalities—heart-wrenching romantic balladeer\, marvelous observational humorist\, poet of ordinary New England scenes and people\, committed activist\, irascible grump. Cheryl’s special guest tonight is her frequent partner in crime\, New York songwriter Kenny White.

SUMMARY:Oumou Sangare
DESCRIPTION:“The Songbird of Wassoulou” brings the music of Mali to Michigan! Oumou Sangaré is a true icon of West Africa whose powerful music and fierce feminism have inspired artists from Alicia Keys to Aya Nakamura to Beyoncé. The songs on her most recent album\, “Timbuktu\,”  were largely written in Baltimore during the lockdowns of the COVID pandemic. The album blends the sounds of traditional West African instruments with those of instruments most associated with the blues. Oumou will share music from this ambitious album as well as sounds from throughout her acclaimed career. How acclaimed? The New Yorker says\, “Percussive\, danceable\, and haunting\, the singer’s visionary mix is the primary reason that her voice has come to carry as much respect as Aretha Franklin’s.”

SUMMARY:Suzanne Vega - Old Songs\, New Songs and Other Songs
DESCRIPTION:Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation\, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk revival of the early 1980s when\, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar\, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion\, Vega’s distinctive\, “clear\, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool\, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post\, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital\, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. \nBearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times)\, Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life\, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated\, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago. \nSuzanne Vega will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist\, Gerry Leonard\, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner\, Luka\, and more!

SUMMARY:Nick Shoulders & The Okay Crawdad
DESCRIPTION:This show has been rescheduled from an earlier date. Tickets purchased for the earlier date will be honored for this performance. \n“All Bad\,” the latest album from Nick Shoulders\, ultimately encapsulates everything that makes Nick’s inimitable form of country music so vital: a heady balance of dazzling musicianship and punk defiance\, coupled with gritty eccentricity and a generational connection to the roots of the genre. With a singing style inherited from his family’s vocal lineage\, Nick’s songs achieve the rare feat of imparting difficult truths while inciting a certain joyful abandon\, balancing a sound forged by years of hard travel with a heartfelt reverence for the origins of country music. In the spirit of Hazel Dickens and Jimmy Driftwood\, the incisive yet wildly jubilant All Bad vocally objects to the reckless destruction of the natural landscape and development run rampant\, while still offering plenty of joy and dance-ready rhythms. Spanning a variety of early country styles\, the album’s infectious harmonies shine alongside everything from jangling cajun waltzes to surf-rock infused bluesy ballads–all tied together by a voice seemingly out of place in this century\, yet ever ready to speak up about its problems.  \nReleased via Gar Hole Records (a label founded and co-owned by Shoulders)\, All Bad marks the first LP made with his longtime band\, the Okay Crawdad\, since 2019’s premier full-length Okay\, Crawdad and their subsequent pandemic-imposed hiatus. After writing most of the album from the front seat of a tour van\, the Fayetteville\, AR-based musician and bandmates Grant D’Aubin (harmonies/bass)\, Cheech Moosekian (drums) and Jack Studer (lead guitar) recorded the album in a home studio on the banks of the Mississippi River with New Orleans collaborators Ross Farbe and Sam Doores.  \nSurrounded by a singing style passed down from a time before microphones\, Nick’s childhood of bird call whistles and an over-exposure to southern gospel music eventually steered him toward an adolescence drumming for metal and punk bands\, and subsequent years as an active illustrator and member of Arkansas’s heavy music scene. After numerous personal calamities and a growing obsession with the rural musical traditions of his lifelong home\, Shoulders left the Ozarks and lived out of his van\, singing on the street corners of the west while slowly being drawn to the vibrance of the New Orleans dance and busking world. After forming in early 2018\, the ‘Okay Crawdad’ band flourished briefly in the wildly talented south Louisiana alt-country scene\, culminating in the release of ‘Rather Low’ by the popular YouTube channel Western AF\, catapulting Nick’s songs to a vastly wider audience right as Covid-19 and lockdowns ensued. Since then\, a rapid ascension into the world of touring music has seen Nick playing alongside the likes of Sierra Ferrell and at major festivals such as Stagecoach. With the hard rhythms and heavenly melodies of their newest release\, All Bad\, the band manages to concoct a body of work that is at turns sublimely freewheeling and profoundly illuminating\, yet primed to permanently warp the listener’s perspective to glorious effect. \nMaddy Kirgo of New Orleans opens.

SUMMARY:David Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:David Wilcox is a penetrating storyteller. The revered folk musician has an effortless talent for spinning lyrics that quietly cut deep\, and crafting melodies that seamlessly ride the plot twists and turns. Wilcox handily exemplifies the power of lyrical and musical catharsis \nThe Ohio native with the warm baritone found his artistic muse in North Carolina during the mid-1980s. In 1987 he released his debut album\, “The Nightshift Watchman\,” which led to winning the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1988.Thirty-plus years and twenty-plus albums later\, Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting Competition in 2018 for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking.” Wilcox has deservedly earned praise over the years in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, and Rolling Stone\, to name a few. Today\, Wilcox is still earning his admirers with storytelling that cuts deep into the soul and observes the human condition from both the nerve center and the outside looking in. That kind of storytelling is certain to become a good friend. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page.   \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:The Accidentals
DESCRIPTION:Long before glowing acclaim from NPR and Billboard\, packed shows\, unforgettable festival appearances\, millions of streams\, and collaborations with everyone from BTS to Kaboom Collective\, the journey of The Accidentals commenced in a public high school classroom in Traverse City\, MI. As the story goes\, concertmaster violinist Savannah Buist and cellist Katie Larson raised their hands at the request for volunteers to play a music boosters concert and wound up being musical soulmates. After Sav and Katie attended a school presentation by The Moxie Strings\, their collective fate would be sealed forever. “If the Moxie Strings hadn’t come to our school\, we might not have pursued music professionally\,” admits Sav. \nSav and Katie transferred to Interlochen Arts Academy for the remainder of high school\, and since then they have released six full-length albums\, three EPs\, and two live albums\, scored the indie documentary “One Simple Question\,” and collaborated with Keller Williams\, Kaki King\, Tom Paxton\, Kim Richey\, Dar Williams\, and Mary Gauthier.  \nJoining Sav and Katie is Detroit multi-instrumentalist Katelynn Corll. The journey of The Accidentals has only just begun. “The goal of our music has always been shared experiences. Music helps us process things that are hard to process\,” says Sav. “A lot of the writing comes from touring\, and touring is just a myriad of extremes\, triumphs\, and failures. It’s how we connect with people in those moments that shape our experiences. Hopefully\, people can relate to something we’re creating in a way that feels like understanding. Maybe it offers a different perspective\, and that leads to less loneliness and more community.”
