Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nFeatured storytellers this year are Yasu Ishida and Elizabeth Ellis.  \nCombining traditional Japanese theatre\, music\, origami\, magic\, and storytelling; Yasu Ishida will guide you to the enchanting land of Japan. ​Yasu has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre for Young Audiences and has been performing all around the county\, including the Disney Summer Stage Kids (NY)\, the National Cherry Blossom Festival (Washington D.C.)\, to the Hawaii Music & Book Festival. \nElizabeth Ellis grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky. Her grandfather and aunt told both traditional stories and tales of their own creation. Her uncles were big raconteurs\, and every get together was a contest to see who could top the others. The Tejas Storytelling Association has recognized her work with the John Henry Faulk Award\, given for significant contribution to storytelling in their region. The National Storytelling Network has honored her with both the Circle of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of her artistry and service. \nThe Ark’s Storytelling Family Show is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nOne of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, Creole and Zydeco music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. Originally from San Felipe\, TX (population 868)\, Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston\, TX. Just two years later\, he moved to south Louisiana\, quickly immersing himself in French music and language. Cedric has performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups\, including the Pine Leaf Boys\, Corey Ledet\, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams\, and with his own group\, Bijou Creole. Cedric’s music resurrects the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa\, who were sold as slaves in the Caribbean and Louisiana by the French and Spanish.  \nRev. Robert Jones\, Sr. has been a professional musician for more than forty years. The legendary blues man\, Willie Dixon encouraged him to bring his music into schools over 35 years ago\, and The National Blues Foundation recognized his work as a leading blues educator in 2007. An award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, he is accomplished on guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle and ukulele. Robert is the former host of the award-winning radio programs “Blues from the Lowlands” and “Deep River” broadcast on Detroit Public Radio’s WDET-FM Detroit. He has taught music history courses at Wayne State University in Detroit\, and he serves as a member of the affiliate faculty at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. \nDedicated to the traditional sounds of Southwest Louisiana\, Creole du Nord delivers a lively Cajun & Zydeco groove featuring fiddle\, accordion and a rockin’ rhythm section “pour les bonne temps.” Bandleader Mark Palms traced his family roots to Breaux Bridge and now brings the uplifting spirit of Louisiana to the northern great lakes with Michigan’s finest; Billy King (gtr)\, Walter Prettyman (fid)\, Carol Palms (bass) & Pete Siers (drums).  After learning from some of Louisiana’s best… such as Joe Hall\, Steve Riley\, Blake Miller\, Jesse Lege\, Ray Abshire\, Walter Mouton and more\, Mark and the band Creole du Nord have been playing festivals\, dances\, and clubs across Michigan and the midwest. \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Blue LLama Jazz Club

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThree masters\, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned “Slack Key Show®” share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar and ‘ukulele\, with origins in the early 19th century when the ‘ukulele and the guitar were introduced to Hawai‘i by Portuguese immigrants and Mexican vaqueros\, respectively. Ever since\, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. \nFour-time Grammy-winner\, master slack key guitarist GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR.\, known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”\, is an award winning vocalist\, storyteller\, songwriter & author\, teacher\, sculptor\, farmer\, and chef\, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and named to the Maui Nui Hall of Fame in 2024. \nSlack Key Guitarist\, Hawaiian Steel Guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer\, SONNY LIM developed his guitar & vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. He was also one of the early members of the renowned Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau for whom he played lap steel guitar beginning at age 15. The foursome made up of Alexander Fedoryka (Vocals\, Fiddle\, Mandolin\, Harmonica)\, Danylo Fedoryka (Vocals\, Guitar\, Accordion)\, Ethan Dean (Vocals\, Upright and Electric Bass\, Percussion\, Guitar) and Johnny Rees (Vocals\, Drums\, Percussion) brings various influences together to create a conglomerate which is technically precise and steeped in various folk traditions: The classically trained Fedoryka brothers grew up on Ukrainian folk music and bluegrass\, while Ethan Dean was raised on the greats of 60’s & 70’s folk-rock. Lafayette\, LA raised Johnny Rees brings a Cajun backbeat to the Celtic-Americana fusion giving Scythian yet another dimension which keeps audiences entertained and moving.  \nScythian is coming off its most prolific year in 2020 with over 1\,000 hours of live streams during the Covid Lockdowns\, release of two new albums (Roots & Stones and Quaranstream: The Album) and four new music videos. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys are one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing. \nThere are no advance ticket sales for tonight’s show. Tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the show. Doors open at 7:30pm.

Their songs offer singalong melodies and deep\, meaningful lyrics which tell the stories of everyday hard working people\, often faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Signature songs like “One Last Drink”\, “Gasoline”\, “Down With The Ship” and “Lancaster Gate” have had millions of plays on streaming services\, appeared in Hollywood movies\, and have been performed and recorded by artists around the world. \nEnter The Haggis’ commitment to putting on a great show every single night has made them a favorite at festivals and performing arts centers across the US and Canada.  As a result\, ETH shows have become an annual tradition on some of the most prestigious stages on the continent. \nEnter The Haggis has appeared on “Live with Regis and Kelly” and “A&E’s Breakfast With The Arts”\, and was the feature of an hour-long PBS concert special which aired for months on more than eighty affiliate stations across the US.  The band’s legions of die-hard fans (the self-described “Haggis Heads”) have crowdfunded the last five ETH albums\, helping to propel their releases to the top of Folk Radio and Billboard Heatseekers charts.

Kimes and her band offer a striking live show with a timeless sound\, her tireless voice leading the way\, her sentiments forging their own new space in the country americana scene.

SUMMARY:Matt Nathanson - King of (un)simple Tour
DESCRIPTION:Over his almost 30 year career\, Matt Nathanson has evolved into one of the most applauded songwriters and engaging performers on the music scene today. His sixth studio album\, Some Mad Hope\, yielded his breakthrough multi-platinum hit “Come on Get Higher.”  He followed up with Modern Love\, a critically acclaimed album (PopMatters called it “the closest a pop album comes to perfection this year”) that garnered Nathanson two RIAA Gold Certified singles\, “Faster” & “Run (featuring Sugarland)”. His 2013 release\, Last of The Great Pretenders\, debuted at #16 on the Billboard Top 200 while hitting #1 on iTunes’ Alternative Albums chart. His most recent album\, Sings His Sad Heart spawned the hit single “Used To Be” which was a chart climber – hitting top 20 at Adult Top 40.  Throughout his career\, Nathanson has been known to cover songs and artists that inspire him. His Def Leppard approved cover album of their iconic Pyromania called Pyromattia shot to #1 on iTunes Alternative chart and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott called the album “an amazing reinterpretation” with “heart & soul.” Last year he covered U2’s Achtung Baby as a tribute to his all time favorite album. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) collectively comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. \nOld Blind Dogs are delighted to be joined by the brilliant fiddler Sarah Collins for this tour. Based in the Baltimore/DC area with deep roots in the Boston traditional music community\, Sarah spent part of her childhood in Edinburgh and though she grew up immersed in the Scottish music scene\, her playing today blends influences from the Scottish\, Irish and Old-Time fiddle styles. We are delighted to have her and she will be fantastic cover for original band member\, Jonny Hardie\, who is unable to join the band on this tour.

Joe’s songs are playful\, clever\, engaging\, joyful\, and always have something meaningful to say. The core of his message is an invitation to heal our relationships with our selves\, with each other\, and with the earth. Joe uses his music to bring people together and build community across lines of race\, class\, gender\, ethnicity\, religion\, age\, and nationality. Joe is Italian\, Irish\, and Native American (Cherokee) and was raised in Kalamazoo\, Michigan in a creative household by musical parents who encouraged him to find his own voice. Joe loves to inspire others to do the same and to water seeds of compassion\, joy\, wisdom\, and peace in our collective consciousness through the sharing of his music. \nKyler Wilkins\, the mastermind behind the mesmerizing loop station magic of Ki5\, will open the night with a special acoustic set.  \nVoices is a series of artist-cultivated concerts at The Ark conceived and created by Ann Arbor musician Kyler Wilkins\, AKA vocal looping artist Ki5. The series seeks to expand the representation of Michigan BIPOC artists and audiences at The Ark. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies\, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base.  \nIt’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner\, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award. The band appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Show With David Letterman\,” “Conan O’Brien\,” “CBS This Morning\,” “Later…with Jools Holland\,” and “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in support of the album.  \nIn the years since the release\, the band left their beloved adopted home of Brooklyn and moved to Nashville. Now\, The Lone Bellow is back with Walk Into A Storm\, produced by legendary music producer Dave Cobb and featuring their lead single “Time’s Always Leaving.” The trio\, featuring Zach Williams (guitar/vocals)\, Kanene Donehey Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist)\, and Brian Elmquist (guitar)\, recorded this album in only seven days. The group’s first two albums graced the Billboard 200.

A lover of ballads\, love songs and searing versions of social justice songs\, fond of a good yarn\, she has toured the world making deep connections with her audience connecting via Ireland’s past but crucially repositioning women and songs in a universal and a modern setting. \nKaran has been striking out lately to explore new areas of performance on the piano and with spoken word and theatre. She has released eleven albums as well as contributing to numerous other artists’ projects – appearing on more than 80 albums so far – and has toured extensively throughout North America\, Europe and Japan\, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with such diverse musicians as Maura O’Connell\, James Taylor\, Bela Fleck\, Boston Pops Orchestra\, The Chieftains\, The Dubliners\, Peggy Seeger\, Tim O’Brien\, and Solas. \nKaran’s first theatre show\, I Walked into My Head\, was premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021. 2022 saw Karan collaborate with composer Harry Escott on a version of the Irish ballad “Grace” for the film “Ali & Ava”. Karan’s newest album “Nine Apples of Gold” received extensive radio play on both sides of the Atlantic reaching No 1 on the US Folk radio charts for the month of March. Karan’s new stage show about women in the Irish revolutionary period\, The Women We Will Rise\, was premiered at the Everyman Theatre in Cork in September 2023.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005\, Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar\, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker\, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene\, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years\, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds. \nHaving gained the experience of thousands of shows\, festivals and many miles on the road\, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nAs a seasoned performer\, songwriter\, and recording artist\, Billy King’s presence in the independent music scene brings an original blend of rootsy folk/pop with an occasional touch of country swing. \nIn the early 1990s\, Billy led his two-member band\, the preteen King Brothers\, to local fame in the Ann Arbor area\, performing regularly and releasing five albums of mostly original material. Still living and working on the family farm\, Billy has continued writing and recording\, and\, with his brother\, started Holler Fest\, a three-day music festival featuring Michigan artists. \nBilly’s versatility as a multi-genre singer-songwriter is matched by his ability on a wide range of instruments from guitar and banjo to keyboards and accordion.  \nWithin the songwriting community\, he is well-known for his musicianship and originality. In 2007\, his composition\, “I Don’t Write Love Songs\,” was awarded the Grand Prize in the Great Lakes Songwriting Contest. Influenced by master songwriters such as Bob Dylan\, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon\, Billy crafts melodically compelling songs that maintain a sense of the timeless and classic. Sometimes catchy folk/rock\, sometimes searing blues\, but always direct and thoughtful lyrics – this is original music from an original life\, fully accomplished yet humble\, and most of all real.

They wrote and composed music for the WGA award-winning Peacock Series Baking It starring Maya Rudolph\, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. The duo has also written songs and musical sketches for the hit animation show Rick and Morty\, Party Over Here (a Fox sketch show produced by The Lonely Island)\, the Peacock series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin\, Buzzfeed\, FunnyOrDie and Nickelodeon. Zach and Jess are currently developing TV and Film projects with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions\, David Wain (The State\, Role Models\, Wanderlust) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions. They also created and starred in Serious Music\, a digital series for ABC.  \nTheir improvised musical podcast Off Book has been praised by various online publications including Indie Wire\, USA Today\, Parade\, AV Club and Splitsider and been featured at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest Festival\, Moontower\, the world renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal\, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA. Joy teamed up with one of her musical heroes\, 4x Grammy-nominated Margaret Becker\, to make her debut album. “Tell it to the Wind” marks Clark’s arrival on the national stage as a proud\, queer\, Black woman blending the social consciousness of folk\, the rhythms of Southeast Louisiana\, and the soul-centered music she grew up with.

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nTo celebrate the 20th anniversary of her seminal eponymous debut studio album\, Martha Wainwright announces the 20th Anniversary Tour\, hitting North America in the Spring of 2025.  \n“20 years ago my life as an artist took shape when my first record was released. In many ways that record defined me\, as well as launched me into a now over 20 year long career that has made me who I am. It was after 10 years of playing in bars\, making cassettes and EPs to sell at my shows\, singing backup for my brother Rufus\, falling in love and out of love and in again\, practicing\, writing\, singing until I could barely sing anymore\, partying\, walking for hours and hours\, crying and laughing with friends\, playing with musicians and listening to great artists working with my ex-husband in the studio for 2 years that created this first record.  \nLabels wouldn’t sign me when I started and I had to craft\, with the help of many people\, an album that would finally be licensed and released in 2005. My first record tells my story and when it was finally released I was able to work and tour and have a career in music – something that I always wanted but wasn’t sure would happen. 20 years later\, with 6 other albums under my belt\, 2 kids and a career that is chugging along\, I can safely say that my first record paved my way forward and I’m very proud of it and still sing many of these early songs.  \nOn March 21st we will release the record on vinyl for the first time ever\, as well as digitally release unheard songs\, outtakes and early material from that 10 year period of discovery that led to my first record. And along with the re-release there will be a tour (with more dates being announced soon)\, with a few great musicians\, where I’ll play the record in its entirety as well as a few new songs – there’s no 48 year old me without the 28 year old me.  \nWith love and gratitude\, \nMartha”

Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nGrowing up\, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. Although they are on the road much of the year\, the two musicians are fond of saying that they are rarely homesick\, because their music means they always have a bit of home with them wherever they go. \nJoe Newberry comes from a family of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a boy and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. April Verch grew up listening to her dad’s country band play for dances in the Ottawa Valley. She started step dancing at age three and fiddling at age six. In a Newberry & Verch show\, delighted audiences see first-hand the roots of their music\, their love of performing\, and their strong musical connection. Original songs join timeless classics. Stories warm the heart\, and give audiences a chance to understand where the music comes from. \nKnown around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing\, Newberry is also a powerful guitarist\, singer and songwriter. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise\,” featuring guest vocalist Ricky Skaggs\, won the 2012 IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award. With Eric Gibson\, he shared the 2013 IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” A longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion\, he was a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions 2016 tour of the U.K.\, and at the Transatlantic Session’s debut at Merlefest in 2017.  \nBefore launching her professional career\, Verch was the first woman to win both the Canadian Grand Masters and Canadian Open Fiddling Championships. In 2000\, she formed “The April Verch Band\,” and together they have toured the world\, performing in 18 different countries. She has released 14 solo recordings to date\, receiving JUNO\, Canadian Folk Music and Independent Music nominations and awards for several of those releases. Verch was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver\, as part of a segment called “Fiddle Nation” featured in the Opening Ceremonies. \nWhether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony\, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move\, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And\, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one\, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place.

Herb along with his 6 great musicians will be playing all of your favorite TJB hit songs just as you remember hearing them while growing up. \n2025 will mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic album\, “Whipped Cream & Other Delights”. Herb and the band will be performing many of those great songs in addition to many other hit songs that we all know; “The Lonely Bull”\, “Spanish Flea”\, “Taste of Honey”\, “Mexican Shuffle”\, “Tijuana Taxi”\, “This Guy’s In Love With You”\, “What Now My Love”\, “Zorba the Greek”\, “Ladyfingers”\, “Rise” and many other delights. \nThe show runs 90 minutes and is informal as Herb loves to answer questions from the audience about his career\, A&M Records and the many iconic artists like Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66\, The Carpenters and Burt Bacharach that he has worked with over the past 63 years. The show features a giant video screen that displays hundreds of classic photos\, videos\, art and various memorabilia from Herb’s music career. A really exciting show and truly a Once in a Lifetime Concert Event!
