SUMMARY:Guster
DESCRIPTION:Not long before the making of their new album Ooh La La\, Guster celebrated three decades together as a band—a journey that’s included landing a series of hits on the Billboard charts\, working with luminaries like Steve Lillywhite and Richard Swift\, launching their own music festival\, and amassing an ardent fanbase partly on the strength of their relentless touring and deeply communal live show. But despite reaching a milestone few musical acts ever come close to attaining\, Guster’s ninth studio LP reveals a band fully in touch with the voracious creative energy that first inspired their formation. A major leap forward for lead vocalist Ryan Miller\, guitarist Adam Gardner\, drummer Brian Rosenworcel\, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds\, Ooh La La ultimately matches that wide-eyed spirit with a newly heightened sense of confidence\, conviction\, and commitment to the raw sincerity that’s made them so beloved.

SUMMARY:Yasmin Williams
DESCRIPTION:Based in Alexandria\, VA\, Yasmin Williams is an acoustic fingerstyle guitarist and film composer. She has an unorthodox\, modern style of guitar playing and utilizes various techniques including alternate tunings\, percussive hits\, and lap tapping in her music to great effect. Her “radiant sound and adventitious origins have made her a key figure in a diverse dawn for the solo guitar” (The New York Times). Williams’s music has been described as rich\, harmonious\, and “in a lot of ways\, the joy and possibility she brings to the guitar reminds me more of Eddie Van Halen than any of the other fingerstyle guitarists to whom she’s compared” (NPR Music). \nHer latest album\, Urban Driftwood\, has received critical acclaim from numerous major publications including The New York Times\, Pitchfork\, Rolling Stone\, The Washington Post\, NPR Music\, The Fader\, Wallstreet Journal\, AllMusic\, Paste Magazine\, No Depression\, and several other outlets. She was listed as one of the “25 New and Rising Artists Shaping the Future of Music in 2023” by Pitchfork. Most recently\, Williams signed to Nonesuch Records and released a new single\, titled Dawning\, featuring Aoife O’Donovan on vocals\, Kafari on rhythm bones\, and Nic Gareiss on flat foot percussion.  \nYpsilanti’s Brawny Lad opens the show. \nThis show was rescheduled from October 26\, 2024. SUMMARY:Mindy Smith
DESCRIPTION:Good things\, it’s often said\, come to those who wait. And yet\, as one of the great poets of our time also famously observed\, the waiting is the hardest part. Both truths have been proven once again on the journey to singer-songwriter Mindy Smith’s sixth studio album\, Quiet Town\, which brings a treasured musical voice back into the spotlight.  \nA good rule of thumb when going to a Mindy Smith concert\, bring a hanky\, a tissue or an extra sleeve. Your tear ducts don’t know the difference between laughing tears and crying tears and you’ll likely be doing both. “Humor is how I compensate for singing so many sad tunes back-to-back\,” says Smith.  \nMindy Smith is a Long Island-born\, Americana award – winning\, Nashville based singer-songwriter with a clear and honest passion for Americana\, jazz\, pop\, rock\, blues\, and folk. As a recording artist\, she has sold over 750k albums and singles and amassed over 175 million streams to date. \nHer original songs have been recorded and released by the likes of Alison Krauss\, Lee Ann Womack\, Faith Hill and most recently Danny Burns ft Sam Bush. Most recently\, Smith was the featured vocalist on Kenny Chesney’s charting single\, “Better Boat”.  Says Chesney\, “if you just close your eyes and listen to her voice — I’m speaking for me –she brings calm\, she brings a sense that it’s all going to be all right” \nFans can look forward to hearing new songs from Quiet Town as well as beloved tracks from her previous albums during her live performances.

SUMMARY:Peter Mulvey
DESCRIPTION:Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur\, and almost-poet since before he can remember. In 1989 he spent a year in Ireland\, busking on the streets of Dublin and hitchhiking to whatever gigs he could find. Back stateside\, he spent a couple years gigging through the bars of his native Midwest before taking off for Boston\, where he returned to subway busking and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows\, which eventually led to regional and then national touring. The wheels have not stopped since. \nTwenty albums\, one illustrated book\, thousands of live performances\, a TEDx talk\, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp\, opening tours and gigs for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco\, Greg Brown\, Emmylou Harris and Chuck Prophet\, appearances on NPR\, an annual autumn tour by bicycle\, emceeing festivals\, hosting his own Lamplighter Sessions for years in Boston and in Wisconsin… he has built his life’s work on collaboration\, on an instinct for the eclectic and the vital.

SUMMARY:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Already being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.

SUMMARY:Blind Pilot
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe first Blind Pilot album in eight years\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain emerged from a period of artistic crisis and the radical transformation of their creative ecosystem. “I went through a few years where I wasn’t able to write—I tried therapy\, I read books on writer’s block\, I went on writing trips\, but nothing was helping\,” says Israel Nebeker\, frontman for the Oregon-bred band. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.” \nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like 2016’s And Then Like Lions. In a profound step forward for the band—whose lineup also includes drummer/co-founder Ryan Dobrowski\, bassist Luke Ydstie\, and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn—Blind Pilot’s fourth full-length unfolds with an exquisite fluidity\, fully harnessing the undeniable chemistry. “In the past we’ve always been very serious and intentional about the process\, but Josh often encouraged us to throw away our preconceived notions of what the songs were supposed to be\,” says Nebeker. “So much of the album came from all of us playing live together\, listening to each other and trusting our instincts\, and really getting to the core of the song\,” Dobrowski adds. The result: the most revelatory expression yet of Blind Pilot’s palpable reverence for music as a connective force. \nWhile Blind Pilot intends to tour principally as a quartet in support of the record\, the album includes contributions from longtime trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Jorgensen and vibraphonist Ian Krist. In bringing the album to life\, the band worked with a rich palette of instrumentation\, handling each track with equal parts extraordinary care and unbridled spontaneity. For both Dobrowski and Nebeker—who formed an early iteration of the band as college students in the mid-aughts—those moments of ineffably closeness serve as the lifeblood of Blind Pilot. “For me making this album felt like celebrating being together and still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives\,” Dobrowski says. “One of my very favorite things about music is the way it not only connects us as bandmates\, but allows us to connect to an audience—and then within that audience\, people end up connecting with each other. It’s this powerful thing that’s unlike anything else\, and in a way it’s kind of like magic.” \nVIP ticket includes: \nOne (1) General Admission ticket \nInvitation to pre-show experience\, including:\n– Private acoustic performance\n– Group photo with the band \nExclusive VIP merch bundle\, including:\n– Signed poster\n– Commemorative VIP tote bag\n– Custom journal\n– VIP tour laminate \nMerchandise shopping prior to doors opening to the public \nEarly entry into the venue

SUMMARY:David Francey
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nDavid Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter. Born in Ayrshire\, Scotland to parents who were factory workers\, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades\, he worked across Canada in rail yards\, construction sites\, and in the Yukon bush\, all the while writing poetry\, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked.  \nA truly authentic folk singer\, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s\, his wife\, artist Beth Girdler\, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. \nSince then\, David has released thirteen albums\, won four Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band\, The Rankin Family\, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer. \nFrancey also had the honor of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award.

SUMMARY:Jake Blount\, Simon Chrisman\, and Nic Gareiss
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nJake Blount (pronounced: blunt\, they/he) is an award-winning interpreter of Black folk music based in Providence\, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician\, Blount has charted an unprecedented\, Afrofuturist course on his pilgrimage through sound archives and song collections. In his hands\, the banjo\, fiddle\, electric guitar and synthesizer become ceremonial objects used to channel the insurgent creativity of his forebears. From transfixing solo sets to full-band festival appearances complete with crowd-surfing and ecstatic chants\, Blount’s performances – like his recent Smithsonian Folkways release\, The New Faith – seamlessly merge centuries-old traditional songs with the trappings and techniques of modern Black genres. \nComposer and hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman (he/him) brings an unusual and path-breaking style to an instrument that has previously been thought to have limited range and technique\, combining “chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.” (The Boston Herald) His touch and sophisticated rhythmic sensibilities are redefining the instrument and earning the attention of musicians from all over the world. Based in Oregon\, he tours with Grammy-nominated Kittel and Co.\, the Bee Eaters\, and Wes Corbett. \nOne of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch\,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) has been hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance\, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog\, flatfoot\, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration. In this way Gareiss reimagines movement as a musical practice\, recasting percussive dance as a medium that queers the boundaries between sight\, sound\, and touch.

SUMMARY:Mustafa
DESCRIPTION:Dunya\, the title of Mustafa’s masterfully crafted and breathtakingly tender full-length debut\, roughly translates from Arabic to “the world in all its flaws.” It’s a lofty subject for a young songwriter\, but as with every theme at the heart of the Sudanese-Canadian artist’s work—from religious devotion to childhood trauma\, gang violence to romantic intimacy—he approaches it through a personal lens. Blending genres and moods\, weaving novelistic details into instantly memorable folk songs\, he has crafted a record that feels like a series of personal breakthroughs\, arriving one after the other.  \nThe first thing that strikes you about Mustafa’s music has always been his writing: a simple\, piercing tone that can make any story feel as raw and earnest as the words to a love song. With a hushed delivery that can silence his surroundings\, Mustafa evolved swiftly from a child prodigy reciting poems throughout his native Toronto to a behind-the-scenes pop songwriting force. On Dunya\, he becomes a full-on auteur in his own right.  \n“I’m trying to preserve and celebrate the ordinary life in the hood\,” Mustafa notes of his lyrical inspiration. Exploring his upbringing and trajectory onward\, these songs are equally disarming in their simplicity and multilayered in their emotional breadth. Featuring appearances from collaborators such as Aaron Dessner\, Rosalía\, Clairo\, Nicolas Jaar\, and more\, alongside Mustafa’s longtime creative partner Simon Hessmann\, the music reveals a confident\, distinctive voice that’s never sounded more poised for the masses. Even when it sounds like he’s taking on the world\, Mustafa is speaking only for himself: a story that he knows is just getting started.

SUMMARY:Masters of Hawaiian Music
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThree masters\, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned “Slack Key Show®” share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar and ‘ukulele\, with origins in the early 19th century when the ‘ukulele and the guitar were introduced to Hawai‘i by Portuguese immigrants and Mexican vaqueros\, respectively. Ever since\, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. \nFour-time Grammy-winner\, master slack key guitarist GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR.\, known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man”\, is an award winning vocalist\, storyteller\, songwriter & author\, teacher\, sculptor\, farmer\, and chef\, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and named to the Maui Nui Hall of Fame in 2024. \nSlack Key Guitarist\, Hawaiian Steel Guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer\, SONNY LIM developed his guitar & vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. He was also one of the early members of the renowned Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau for whom he played lap steel guitar beginning at age 15. He performed on the first Grammy-winning CD in Hawaiian music\, and he was the first person to deliver a Grammy acceptance speech in his Native Hawaiian language. \n‘Ukulele virtuoso HERB OHTA JR’S natural talent\, knowledge\, technique\, and speed are unsurpassed. Herb’s versatility and ability to adapt to the changing times will captivate you\, the listener\, and transport you. While he enjoys all types of music\, Herb’s favorite songs to perform are ballads and all types of Hawaiian songs because they enhance the natural sound of the instrument. Herb’s style is distinct and recognizable as his own with a graceful “nahenahe” quality (gentle\, melodious\, emotionally evocative) that is very Hawaiian\, reflecting the inspirations of ‘ukulele greats that came before him.
