SUMMARY:Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:By request of the artist\, masks are required for this performance. \n“I’ve been in a long-distance relationship with music for the past several years\,” jokes songwriter Vienna Teng. “Now we’re talking about moving in together again.” \nLong-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, which became the first album to win four Independent Music Awards; she also composed the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer\, which premiered in 2013. Along with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations as well as continents. \nStill\, other pursuits have always beckoned. A computer science major before she was a recording artist\, Vienna is a nerd at heart\, as comfortable in spreadsheets as the spotlight. She returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a “bonus parent” to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown. \nThat year was eye-opening for her. “So much of what I’d taken for granted my whole life just broke wide open\,” she says. “I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes. Things can be both dire and full of possibility. Both kindness and fierceness are so very necessary.” \nShe wondered: what if two songs\, with seemingly contradictory perspectives\, were written so they would “mash up” together into a duet? That fall – sometimes while breastfeeding – Vienna composed a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You”: one about being a beacon to your community\, the other about leaning on that community in your darkest hour. It’s some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done\, and when she performed it in a live-streamed concert that December\, the audience response was electric. \nFittingly for a piece about replenishment and connection\, “We’ve Got You” marks the start of a new chapter for Vienna. “I’ve found a rabbit hole I’m excited to go down further\,” she says. Her long-distance phase with music is over; let the reunion begin. \n  \nPhoto credit: Samantha Hines

SUMMARY:Blackthorn
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nBlackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music. \nTraditional songs of emigration\, sea shanties\, lively jigs and reels\, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people. \nWhat makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes\, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments\, including wooden flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, five string banjo\, cittern\, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony. \nBlackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit\, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls\, universities and festivals\, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest. \nMetro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorn’s annual appearances on J. P. McCarthy’s St. Patrick’s Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 1990s\, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs\, and have performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010\, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times. \nFrom large festival\, to pub\, restaurant or intimate performing arts center\, Blackthorn provides time tested entertainment. Chuck Ward of the Milwaukee Irish Fest says this about the band\, “Blackthorn was very well received at Milwaukee Irish Fest\, they impressed everyone with their strong and well blended songs. They are strong ambassadors in their commitment to continuing the Irish ballad tradition and a crowd pleasing addition to any festival.”

SUMMARY:The Music of Fela Kuti Comes to Life
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nDoubling as a platform for activism\, the music of Fela Kuti was a unique blend of jazz\, funk\, and African influences. Performed by an African big-band of unusual instrumentation\, Fela’s music rolled out in an extended\, hypnotic fashion. His political vocals fell somewhere between melody and musical speech. While the Afrobeat music of Nigeria’s Fela Kuti remains singularly unique\, it typically fails to gain deserved attention in the world of modern-day performance. \nJoin us for a rare opportunity to hear this music authentically reproduced. Originally sponsored by the University of Michigan “MCube” initiative\, this performance unites UofM faculty & musicians from the Flint and Ann Arbor campuses with local professionals. The project\, lead by Brian DiBlassio\, is based on note-for-note transcriptions of Fela’s work\, with feature artist from Cincinnati\, Baoku Moses\, performing the role of Fela. \nBand members include Ingrid Racine\, Andrew Bishop\, Alex Harding\, Brian DiBlassio\, Ben Rolston\, Jonathan Ovalle\, Owl DiBlassio\, Olman Piedra\, Ray Ureña\, and Ann Watson. \n

SUMMARY:The RFD Boys
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nIt’s hard to believe\, because each show is fresh and new\, but the RFD Boys have been delighting Michigan audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly\, exquisitely timed between-song humor. They’re legends of Michigan bluegrass\, but they’re more than that too. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited\, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen\, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley\, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. The RFD Boys one of southeastern Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles\, and their shows capture a deep slice of musical Ann Arbor. Their 50th-anniversary appearance at the Folk Festival was a special moment and introduced many listeners to Dan Roehrig\, who joined the band on guitar\, mandolin\, and bass in mid-2018. Dan grew up listening to Doc Watson\, Clarence White\, and Tony Rice\, and you can hear it in both his singing and guitar playing.

DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThe Yellow Room is the “brilliantly yellow” living room of Tamulevich’s house on Ann Arbor’s Old West Side\, where gang members meet monthly for musical brainstorming and mutual critique. Tonight’s show features all eight members of the gang: contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps\, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe\, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist\, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the “Music to Cure What Ails You” duo Mustard’s Retreat\, Jim Bizer\, David Barrett\, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! “To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat\,” says promoter Bill Keith. “To have them perform together is unbelievable.” The Yellow Room Gang has been around for 15 years now\, with all the members coming up with new music all the while.

SUMMARY:Lily Talmers
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nLily Talmers hopes her voice will lull you into Midwestern-accent-induced submission. A metro Detroit native who now resides in Brooklyn\, New York\, Lily released her second full-length album\, “Hope is the Whore I Go To\,” last July. A writer\, musician\, educator\, lecturer and former Ann Arbor community member\, Lily studied comparative literature\, and ethnomusicology during her undergraduate years at the University of Michigan. She is a teacher during the spring at the University of Michigan’s New England Literature program\, and has taught as a guest lecturer through the U-M’s Residential College and Performing Arts Technology Programs. With a voice described as ethereal\, and lyricism as wistful as it is cutting\, Lily credits the likes of Joni Mitchell\, Paul Simon\, Gillian Welch and Leonard Cohen for her beginnings as a songwriter\, and various odds and ends for her development as a musician and instrumentalist. Her sound is rooted in the 60’s folk revival\, with moments that reveal her broad fascination with music— the influence of Greek\, Lusophone\, and classical music all subtly swirl around in her melodies. Brooklyn singer and composer John Cushing provides support.

DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nBritish guitar legend Albert Lee\, regarded by many as one of the world’s finest guitar players\, with a career spanning more than 50 years\, needs no introduction for country music\, blues\, and rock fans. Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique\, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song “Country Boy.” Albert’s many career highlights include two Grammy wins\, five years in the Eric Clapton band\, and stints with the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman\, The Crickets\, the Everly Brothers\, Joe Cocker\, Emmylou Harris\, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou\, who says\, “When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth\, I’ll be able to say—with pride if that’s allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.” Come by and pick up a copy of Albert’s new DVD\, “Live at the Court Theatre.”

SUMMARY:Joshua Davis // Luke Winslow King
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nWhen Joshua Davis performed on NBC’s “The Voice\,” America at-large finally discovered what Michiganders have known for more than two decades. This amazing artist connects with a live audience\, nourishes their souls and feeds off of their love. Seeing him live has always revealed his core\, his essence. Joshua remains a quintessentially Michigan guy\, drawing his inspiration from the rough-and-tumble streets of Motown to the arboreal Upper Peninsula. The mitten is his muse.  \nLuke Winslow-King is a New Orleans–based guitarist\, singer\, composer\, producer\, and songwriter. His work is an eclectic mix that combines Mississippi Delta blues\, folk music\, traditional jazz\, and roots rock and roll. His alchemical songs blend contemporary ideas with styles from bygone eras producing a sound that is rustic and urbane\, elegant and entirely his own. It is a sound that looks to the past to move to the future.

SUMMARY:The Hot Club of Cowtown & Tyler Hilton
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nCelebrating Elvis Presley’s records from Sun Studio \nKnown for its legendary music collection\, including the early albums of Elvis Presley\, Sun Studio left an indelible mark on the history of rock ‘n’ roll. In 2005\, Tyler Hilton was cast to play the legendary rock star in the blockbuster biopic\, Walk the Line (starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash). Now Tyler has teamed up with America’s premiere hot jazz and Western swing trio\, Hot Club of Cowtown\, bringing Elvis’ greatest hits from the Sun Studio years to life on the stage. The Hot Club of Cowtown has been an Ark favorite for years\, but they’ve continued to break new ground since first visiting Ann Arbor in the 1990s\, and this new show is no exception. Both The Hot Club of Cowtown and Tyler Hilton will perform their own material\, and then they’ll join forces for the Elvis material—which is very much in the Hot Club’s wheelhouse.

SUMMARY:The Brother Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nThe Brother Brothers\, twins\, are Brooklyn’s Adam and Davis Moss. They offer rich harmonies and thoughtful songs accompanied by guitar\, cello\, violin\, and banjo in a coherent way that only musicians from the same family can achieve.  Already established players and composers in a wide spectrum of genres around New York and beyond\, they have teamed up to bring their individual experiences together. Among their fans is Sarah Jarosz\, who raves: “They approach their poignant and often charming songs with an almost startling sense of ease\, and the tight harmonies are enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. Their ability to pull the listener into their quietly energetic musical journey is a joy to behold.” The Brother Brothers come to Michigan with a new album\, “Cover to Cover.” \n

SUMMARY:Robert Jones & Matt Watroba
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nCelebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nEver since their first meeting\, over 20 years ago\, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM\, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. For Matt and Robert\, American roots music (folk\, blues\, spirituals\, work songs\, chants\, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common.  It is music that reflects history\, social change\, migration\, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse\, direct and powerful. This year’s program is a celebration of the life and musical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nNote special start time!

SUMMARY:Wallis Bird
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nFew can enrapture an audience the way Wallis Bird can. Bird is coming to Michigan with a brand new album\, Hands\, which finds her turning the spotlight onto herself\, raising issues that are sometimes hard to confront\, only to emerge optimistic and whole. Among these are issues of trust\, alcohol abuse\, stagnation\, self-censorship and self-improvement\, some addressed through personal recollections of crucial moments accumulated over the last two years. Each\, however\, is delivered by a voice uncommonly blessed with joy\, ingenuity and empathy.

SUMMARY:Djangophonique // Harmonious Wail
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nDjangophonique is a virtuosic\, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown. A true disciple of the style\, Andrew has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche\, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music\, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style\, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club of France revival alive and well. \nThe members of Harmonious Wail\, from Madison\, Wisconsin\, are purveyors of Americana-infused gypsy jazz who continue to take their listeners on a ride via the music of the Hot Club sounds of Parisian cafes\, to the deepest blues of the Memphis Delta\, to the heartfelt folk scenes across every-town-America. Harmonious Wail is a trio of multi-award winning musicians. Sims Delaney-Potthoff\, a mandolin virtuoso\, and vocalist\, Maggie Delaney-Potthoff\, vocalist extraordinaire\, whose percussive instrument of choice is a cardboard box (but who can also rock almost any household object)\, and Jeffo Weiss\, a master bassist who dazzles and mesmerizes on both upright and electric 5-string bass. As stewards of the Gypsy Jazz genre\, they have established the Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest\, held twice a year in Madison\, Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:Heywood Banks
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nHeywood Banks is simply one-of-a-kind\, almost impossible to describe\, with a style his very own. Equal parts genius and buffoon\, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician from Flint has become a cult hero and a pop icon\, with a show that appeals to college students\, stoners\, businessmen\, yuppies\, rednecks\, punks\, kids\, or your grandmother. Heywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted\, inventive\, bizarre songs\, sung and played in a variety of styles\, from folk\, to country to rock to pop\, and way beyond. You have to be pretty smart to get Heywood at his deepest level (he demands a high level of pop culture literacy)\, but you can also enjoy him just for his vocal style impersonations\, expert musicianship and just plain silliness. But why trust our opinions? Come and see for yourself!

SUMMARY:Neal Francis
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nPresented with support from Ann Arbor’s 107one \nOn his new album\, “In Plain Sight\,” Neal Francis offers up a body of work both strangely enchanted and painfully self-aware\, unfolding in songs sparked from Greek myths and frenzied dreams and late-night drives in the depths of summer delirium. True to its charmed complexity\, the singer/songwriter/pianist’s second full-length came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a possibly haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience\, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.  \nBravery can take many forms. For Danielle Ponder it took the shape of a leap of faith: leaving her successful day job working in the public defender’s office in her hometown of Rochester (New York) to devote herself full-time to sharing her powerful voice with the world. The singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing eight-song debut\, “Some of Us Are Brave\,” reinforces that her faith was not misplaced\, and her leap has been rewarded with a safe landing. Written and recorded over three years\, the album is a refreshingly original\, shiver-inducing mix of pop\, R&B\, blues\, rock\, and moody trip-hop topped by Danielle’s celestial voice— an instrument that can plumb melancholy depths with a heartsick murmur and scrape the sky with hurricane force wails.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nSince his earliest infatuations with guitar\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee\, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. He heard jazz in Ukraine\, blues from expat African Americans in Berlin. “Part of my intent\, making myself more comfortable with this release\, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues\,” guitarist\, songwriter\, and vocalist Buffalo Nichols explains. “Listening to this record\, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album\, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas\, and it marks a new stage of the blues.

SUMMARY:Mustard's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \nCOVID-19 FAQ \nMustard’s Retreat has always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about\, regardless of the trends of the music industry and pop culture. They are committed to simply being themselves\, not chasing fame or brass rings\, while delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them\, and that is as true now as it was then. They’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6\,000 shows\, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors\, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career\, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them. “Folk music is\, at its heart\, defiantly hopeful!” founder David Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s\, at the confluence of Pete Seeger\, Peter\, Paul & Mary\, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. We care much more about what we do and stand for and finding that common ground with our audiences\, than fame or money: this is our community of choice\, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here.” Tonight’s show features the Mustard’s Retreat 2.0 duo of Tamulevich and Libby Glover\, who come to The Ark with a new album\, “By Request.”

SUMMARY:Talisk
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\nCOVID-19 FAQ \nGroundbreaking\, chart-topping\, genre-bending\, globetrotting\, instantly enthralling… it’s little wonder that Talisk ranks highly amongst the most in-demand folk-based groups to emerge from Scotland in the last decade and more. Mohsen Amini (BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards’ Musician of the Year)\, Graeme Armstrong and Benedict Morris  (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year) fuse concertina\, guitar\, and fiddle to produce a multilayered signature that has captivated audiences around the globe. At its core\, three seemingly acoustic instruments—but in the hands of three master craftsmen one unmistakable\, bold sound and captivating live show. Talisk is coming to Michigan with a new album\, “Dawn.” \nOpener Anna Mieke’s deft songwriting and enveloping compositions have asserted her as a vital voice amongst Ireland’s alt-folk genre. The Irish multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based in Wicklow\, Ireland\, toes the line between folk forms and vivid dreamscapes\, drawing on traditional and contemporary motifs. The lyrically ornate and instrumental delicacy of her work\, alongside flowing atmospheric arrangements\, contributes a challenging\, emphatic and new voice to alt-folk.
