SUMMARY:Summer Sounds at The Ann Arbor Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nTHE RUPPLE BROTHERS\n6pm \nThe Rupple Brothers are a psychedelic folk ensemble who combine a love for family\, music\, life\, and improvisation to create a musical space unlike any other. Born unto song\, brothers Evan and Cole\, and an ever expanding cast of soul brothers\, traverse the entire spectrum of sound and space; each being proficient in multiple ways of musical strangeness\, while bringing a positive and powerful family message with their brand of wild folk. They have carved themselves out a respected place amongst the Michigan music scene\, throwing their own annual grassroots festival Handmade Music Festival in their home of Chesaning\, opening for bands like The Way Down Wanderers\, Chirp\, The Mallett Brothers Band\, Tejon Street Corner Thieves\, Good Old War\, opening up for White Denim at Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch\, winning the Review Award for “Best Duo”\, and playing top tier venues and festivals across the state. They plan to carry their stories of song to the furthest reaches of the universe. \nBOBBY ALU\n7:30pm \nIf you ask Byron Bay’s Bobby Alu what his music sounds like\, he’ll tell you how he hopes it makes you feel: like you have your favorite drink in hand\, sipping as the sun sets on a balmy evening that’s laden with the promise of adventure. In an ideal world\, he’d follow summer around the earth\, in his endless quest to nail that feeling in his songs. \nFor Bobby it’s all about letting the music decide where it takes you – creatively and physically – and following the threads of curiosity large\, small and often strange. It’s playing ukulele with old friends at the local market in exchange for a box of vegetables\, because how weird is it to improvise along to people buying bananas at 7am on a Tuesday? It’s going to Ghana with just a hunch and a WhatsApp number to track down the rhythms that lit up his heart. It’s touring the world for five years as Xavier Rudd’s percussionist\, learning how to be in service to the vibe of a room\, and how to make the jump to being an international performer in his own right. It’s honoring his Samoan heritage through sharing the stage and releasing an EP with his mother to connect with the language of her homeland. Always\, it’s about being open to discovery: if you choose music\, you choose it all.

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year! \nBRAIN PLASTICITY UKULELE COLLECTIVE AND BLUESHOUSE\n6pm \nBrain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is an open community of musicians playing at all levels and abilities. Ukes? Well\, it’s more like 30 different instruments. Plasticity? Yes! The Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective believes that by sharing music and learning how to play a new instrument\, you can: “Drop a brain bomb. Fire up the synapses. Rewire some neural pathways.” And BLUESHOUSE!\, led by veteran English bluesman Mike Brooks\, has enlivened countless stages and street parties around southeast Michigan over the last decade. Join us for a combination that will stretch your brain! \nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.

SUMMARY:Men at Work\, Toad the Wet Sprocket\, & Shonen Knife
DESCRIPTION:Men At Work were born in Melbourne\, Australia in the middle of 1979. The band went on to become a globally successful Grammy winning\, multi-platinum selling act. The original band however came apart relatively quickly and had disintegrated by 1985. Colin Hay and Greg Ham responded to demand and toured many parts of the world as Men At Work from 1996 into the 2000’s. Sadly\, Greg Ham passed away in 2012. Colin Hay has developed a solo career over the last 35 years\, writing\, recording\, and touring extensively throughout the world as a solo artist. He is presently part of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. Since 2019\, he has also toured and played under the Men At Work banner with his LA based group of musicians\, where he plays an exclusively Men At Work set\, including all the hits and dearly loved songs which clearly have stood the test of time. \nAny music fan who grew up in the ‘90s\, before the rise of streaming platforms\, will tell you that when a record store clerk made a music recommendation\, you took it seriously. Often well-studied music nerds\, these unsung tastemakers had their finger on the pulse of lesser-known\, excellent bands. So it speaks volumes that many of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s earliest champions were record store clerks who put the Santa Barbara quartet’s early albums into unsuspecting listeners’ hands\, convincing them to overlook their unusual band name and give them a shot.   \nAnd that’s all it took. Lead singer Glen Phillips’ heartfelt\, introspective lyrics expressed in his deep\, buttery croon backed by the earnest instrumentation\, catchy melodies and vocal harmonies of guitarist Todd Nichols\, bassist Dean Dinning and drummer Randy Guss had fans hooked from the outset. \nToad’s third full-length album\, Fear\, went platinum after its 1991 release and spawned hits “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean\,” both of which made it to the top 20 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. And let’s not forget all the quintessential ‘90s shows and movies that featured Toad songs including Buffy the Vampire Slayer\, Dawson’s Creek\, I Know What You Did Last Summer\, Empire Records\, and the platinum-selling Friends soundtrack (“Good Intentions”). Toad released Dulcinea in 1994\, giving the band its second platinum album in a row. Recorded almost entirely live in a studio in the woods in Marin County in a room lit by hundreds of candles\, the album features fan favorites “Fall Down” and “Windmills.” The band took a break in the late ‘90s\, and the members left to pursue solo projects. They reunited in 2006\, maintaining the original lineup for the next 15 years until drummer Randy Guss departed in 2020 due to health concerns. After reuniting\, the band released New Constellation in 2013. Critics praised it for being an evolution for the band while still maintaining their signature sound and songcraft. \nEven with everything that’s changed over the last few decades\, one of the band’s main drivers has remained the same since they first started performing together in high school: bringing people together to experience music as a binding force and to help them feel like they belong. \nSince their pure DIY beginnings in 1981\, Osaka\, Japan’s Shonen Knife have been building a faithful following of music enthusiasts and the alternative rock elite. Their relentless journey secured the band’s place as one of the pioneer ambassadors of Japanese rock music and culture on the international stage.

SUMMARY:The Mavericks & Friends
DESCRIPTION:For three decades\, The Mavericks carved out their Grammy-winning sound — a multicultural version of American roots music\, blending stateside influences like country and rock & roll with the border-crossing textures of Cuban grooves\, Tex-Mex twang\, and Latin swagger — under the direction of Raul Malo. Raul wasn’t just the band’s frontman; he was its larger-than-life patriarch\, with a booming baritone hailed by Rolling Stone as “operatic\, spiritual\, casually elegant\, and wholly captivating.” With help from musicians like Paul Deakin\, Robert Reynolds\, Eddie Perez\, and Jerry Dale McFadden\, Malo turned The Mavericks into modern-day legends on their own terms\, enjoying mainstream success during the 1990s (when songs like “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” became staples on country radio) before reinventing themselves as genre-bending independents during the 2010s and beyond.  \n“Raul was one of those fine-wine singers\,” says Deakin\, who co-founded the band in 1989 in Miami\, Florida. “His voice was ridiculously powerful when we first started\, and it just got better with age.”  \nA battle with cancer forced Raul off the road in 2025\, but his musical influence remained. During his final hours on earth\, he watched from afar as his bandmates played the Ryman Auditorium\, honoring the man and his melodies with help from guest singers\, family members\, and a sold-out crowd. This was more than a concert; it was a celebration of the legacy the Mavericks had built together\, highlighting the staying power of lifelong friendships and great songs. “Raul used to tell me that every time we released new music\, it didn’t belong to us anymore; it belonged to the fans\,” remembers Perez\, whose guitar playing became an integral part of The Mavericks’ sound during their 21st century reunion. “To me\, the band has always transcended the people in it. It’s more about the feeling\, the vibe\, and the high-energy entertainment we give people. We want to continue giving that spirit to our fans.”  \nGreat songs endure\, even when their original vocalists are no longer here to sing them. There’s no replacing a once-in-a-generation talent like Raul Malo\, but there is a way to honor the music he left behind. That’s why The Mavericks are returning to the road\, performing classics like “Come Unto Me\,” “Back In Your Arms Again\,” and “As Long As There’s Loving Tonight” for the fans who helped make those songs legendary. Presented as “The Mavericks & Friends\,” these all-star shows will feature a decade-spanning version of the band\, along with guest singers like Emily West and James Otto.  \n“It’s not just a continuation of The Mavericks; it’s a moving musical art piece\, from one show to the next\,” Perez explains. “James and Emily can sing these songs with passion\, spirit\, and energy\, because they love this music as much as we do. We might have different guests join us throughout the tour. People who love these songs just as much as we do. Maybe we’ll have a soul singer one night. Maybe we’ll get somebody from the rockabilly scene. Each show in each city will be different\, and that’s part of the adventure.”  \nThat adventure has brought different eras of the band together. After a 10 year absence\, bass player Robert Reynolds is back in the lineup — a move that not only restores the group’s original rhythm section\, but helps bridge the gap between past and present\, too. “In this incarnation of The Mavericks\, we can celebrate across a wide arc of the band’s music\,” Reynolds says. “We can honor Raul by looking at all the songs he wrote\, including the early ones. It all becomes relevant again — and for the fans\, this is a chance to see a full retrospective that cuts across the entire catalog.”  \n“Raul would always write our setlist\, and it would be different every night\,” remembers Jerry Dale McFadden\, the band’s keyboardist since 1994. “We have a lot of material to choose from. We released 8 records during the past 13 years alone\, and that means our shows can all be a little different. They always have been.”  \nThe world looks different than it did in 1989\, when The Mavericks launched their career in the punk bars and rock clubs of Miami. Decades have passed and trends have shifted\, but The Mavericks have endured. Now\, they’ve found a new path forward as The Mavericks & Friends\, honoring their beloved Raul Malo while building upon the legacy he helped create.
