SUMMARY:Will Hoge
DESCRIPTION:Will Hoge has a career whose milestones include Number One hits\, Grammy nods\, major-label record deals\, and hard-won independence. Years before Americana music received its own category at the Grammy Awards\, Hoge was on the frontlines\, helping to pilot and popularize the genre’s blend of American roots music. In the current digital era dominated by influencers seeking shortcuts to stardom\, Will Hoge proudly treads the scenic route\, immersing himself in the journey rather than fixating on the destination. \nDue to a scheduled construction project which will impact The Ark’s building on Main Street\, our show with Will Hoge and special guest Scott Terry on Thursday\, March 27 is being moved to a new location. Many thanks to our friends at Kerrytown Concert House for making their space available – we are delighted with this opportunity to partner with them for this show and to jointly celebrate their 40th anniversary and our 60th.

SUMMARY:The Lone Bellow
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies\, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base.  \nIt’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner\, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award. The band appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Show With David Letterman\,” “Conan O’Brien\,” “CBS This Morning\,” “Later…with Jools Holland\,” and “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in support of the album.  \nIn the years since the release\, the band left their beloved adopted home of Brooklyn and moved to Nashville. Now\, The Lone Bellow is back with Walk Into A Storm\, produced by legendary music producer Dave Cobb and featuring their lead single “Time’s Always Leaving.” The trio\, featuring Zach Williams (guitar/vocals)\, Kanene Donehey Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist)\, and Brian Elmquist (guitar)\, recorded this album in only seven days. The group’s first two albums graced the Billboard 200.

SUMMARY:Blind Pilot
DESCRIPTION:The elevator at The Ark is out of service while technicians make repairs. Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe first Blind Pilot album in eight years\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain emerged from a period of artistic crisis and the radical transformation of their creative ecosystem. “I went through a few years where I wasn’t able to write—I tried therapy\, I read books on writer’s block\, I went on writing trips\, but nothing was helping\,” says Israel Nebeker\, frontman for the Oregon-bred band. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.” \nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like 2016’s And Then Like Lions. In a profound step forward for the band—whose lineup also includes drummer/co-founder Ryan Dobrowski\, bassist Luke Ydstie\, and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn—Blind Pilot’s fourth full-length unfolds with an exquisite fluidity\, fully harnessing the undeniable chemistry. “In the past we’ve always been very serious and intentional about the process\, but Josh often encouraged us to throw away our preconceived notions of what the songs were supposed to be\,” says Nebeker. “So much of the album came from all of us playing live together\, listening to each other and trusting our instincts\, and really getting to the core of the song\,” Dobrowski adds. The result: the most revelatory expression yet of Blind Pilot’s palpable reverence for music as a connective force. \nWhile Blind Pilot intends to tour principally as a quartet in support of the record\, the album includes contributions from longtime trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Jorgensen and vibraphonist Ian Krist. In bringing the album to life\, the band worked with a rich palette of instrumentation\, handling each track with equal parts extraordinary care and unbridled spontaneity. For both Dobrowski and Nebeker—who formed an early iteration of the band as college students in the mid-aughts—those moments of ineffably closeness serve as the lifeblood of Blind Pilot. “For me making this album felt like celebrating being together and still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives\,” Dobrowski says. “One of my very favorite things about music is the way it not only connects us as bandmates\, but allows us to connect to an audience—and then within that audience\, people end up connecting with each other. It’s this powerful thing that’s unlike anything else\, and in a way it’s kind of like magic.” \nVIP ticket includes: \nOne (1) General Admission ticket \nInvitation to pre-show experience\, including:\n– Private acoustic performance\n– Group photo with the band \nExclusive VIP merch bundle\, including:\n– Signed poster\n– Commemorative VIP tote bag\n– Custom journal\n– VIP tour laminate \nMerchandise shopping prior to doors opening to the public \nEarly entry into the venue

SUMMARY:The Bygones
DESCRIPTION:It’s human nature to look back\, and to try to make sense of that which has gone by. For the luminous indie folk duo of Joshua Lee Turner and Allison Young\, it’s a question not only of what should be relinquished\, but also what might be worth taking with you. “There’s goodness in every decade of \nmusic. And there’s goodness in every season of life\,” Josh shares. “For us\, it’s about finding what’s golden in the past and bringing that forward.” \nThe pair share an eclectic nostalgia for sounds of the past—Jazz and Classical\, Golden Age musicals\, big bands of the ‘40s\, singer-songwriters of the ‘60s\, dewy indie rock of the early 2010s—as well as a passion for instrumental music and covers. These points of connection began online\, culminated in an impromptu recording session in Nashville\, and compelled an unexpected path forward.  \nThe duo’s first release together\, a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Crazy\,” gathered massive enthusiasm online as well as the fervent demand of one UK promoter that they tour overseas. Josh and Allison accepted the invitation and rushed to record an EP to have something—anything—to play for audiences\, audiences which sold out venues and applauded The (yet-to-be-named) Bygones with standing ovations before they even strummed a note. “It didn’t make any sense\,” Josh says. “We weren’t a band yet.” But to see The Bygones live is to comprehend the hype. Allison’s stylish\, luminescent presence and vocal finesse\, Josh’s astonishing technical aptitude\, and the palpable joy in their onstage dynamic create a live show experience that demands multiple encores.  \nRather than a band asking the world to listen\, the world asked these two musicians to be a band. Their debut album ‘The Bygones’ was released April 4\, 2024 on Tonetree.

SUMMARY:Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones
DESCRIPTION:When Grammy winner Dave Alvin and Grammy nominee Jimmie Dale Gilmore made the album Downey To Lubbock together in 2018\, they wrote the title track as a sort of mission statement. “I know someday this old highway’s gonna come to an end\,” Alvin sings near the song’s conclusion. Gilmore answers: “But I know when it does you’re going to be my friend.” Six years later\, they’re serving notice that the old highway hasn’t ended yet. “We’re still standing\, no matter what you might hear\,” they sing on “We’re Still Here\,” the final track to their new album Texicali. Due out Jun 21\, 2024 on Yep Roc Records\, Texicali continues to bridge the distance between the two troubadours’ respective home bases of California (Alvin) and Texas (Gilmore). \nThe album’s geographic theme reflects Alvin’s repeated journeys to record in Central Texas with Gilmore and the Austin-based backing band that has toured with the duo for the past few years. The 11 songs on Texicali also connect the duo’s shared fondness for a broad range of American music forms. On their own\, both have been prominent artists for decades. A philosophical songwriter with a captivating\, almost mystical voice\, Gilmore co-founded influential Lubbock group the Flatlanders in the early 1970s. Alvin first drew attention as a firebrand guitarist and budding young songwriter with Los Angeles roots-rockers the Blasters in the early 1980s. \nGilmore is primarily known for left-of-center country music\, while Alvin’s compass points largely toward old-school blues. But there’s a lot of ground to cover beyond those foundations\, and both artists also are well-known for transcending genre limitations. So it’s not surprising that they’ve spiked Texicali with cosmic folk narratives\, deep R&B grooves and even swinging reggae rhythms.

SUMMARY:Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:Steve Poltz is not normal. He was born in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, but has lived most of his life in southern California\, and those geographic poles are quite likely responsible for his unhinged genius. With a cult following that includes fellow musicians\, regular folks and festival goers who stumble onto his performances\, there’s no common denominator to Steve’s fans. Steve toured and recorded with San Diego cult favorites The Rugburns (they still play annual sold-out reunion shows). But it was through his creative partnership with Jewel that he vaulted into the national spotlight; co-writing her multiplatinum Billboard Hot 100-busting smash\, “You Were Meant For Me\,” and continues to work with her to this day. \nOver the years\, Steve has built a fascinating solo catalog. No Depression crowned him\, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit\, suggesting at times a sunnier\, less psychedelic Todd Snider\, or maybe a less wan\, washed Jackson Brown.” Among other collaborations\, GRAMMY-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings tapped him to co-write “Leaders” on 2021’s Renewal and he’s co-written with Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood and even Mojo Nixon. \nSteve’s newest album is Stardust & Satellites\, produced by Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers.

SUMMARY:An evening with Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:“I was in a long-distance relationship with music for many years\,” jokes singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. Long-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, as well as the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer. \nTogether with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations and continents. Still\, other pursuits have always beckoned. Vienna returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability\, which led to a new career working on climate change\, energy and waste issues. She also became a bonus parent to her partner’s two kids\, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family – just in time for pandemic lockdown.  \n“I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time\, as the saying goes\,” Vienna says of that period. Out of that idea emerged some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she’s ever done: a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You\,” about leading and leaning on one’s community. When she performs it on stage – solo\, live-looping her voice\, keyboards and percussion to layer the two songs together – the audience response is electric. \n“We’ve Got You” also marks a new chapter of merging her musical and environmental vocations. SUMMARY:Sarah Jarosz: Polaroid Lovers Tour
DESCRIPTION:Four-time GRAMMY winner Sarah Jarosz has announced her new album\, “Polaroid Lovers\,” and she’s bringing it to The Ark! The record is releasing on January 26\, 2024 via Rounder Records. It features a decidedly more electric sound than Sarah’s earlier bluegrass-flavored efforts\, and it shows this brilliant artist maturing as a songwriter. A Texas native\, she’s spent most of her adult life living in New York City\, but shortly before writing the album Sarah left her adopted home to join her soon-to-be husband in Nashville. The geographic shake-up led to a sonic one as well for “Polaroid Lovers.” For the first time in her career she opened herself up to collaborators\, leading to writing sessions with Daniel Tashian\, Ruston Kelly and Natalie Hemby. “‘Polaroid Lovers” is an album-long meditation on those strangely ephemeral moments that indelibly shape our lives. “What I love about a Polaroid is that it’s capturing something so fleeting\, but at the same time it makes that moment last forever\,” says Sarah. “It made sense as a title for a record where all the songs are snapshots of different love stories\, and there’s a feeling of time being expansive despite that impermanence.” \nTonight’s show is sponsored by Dartbank Wealth \n\nThe Polaroid Lovers Tour VIP Experience Includes: \n\nOne (1) general admission — OR — premium reserved ticket (varies by show)\nPre-show soundcheck performance\nQ&A with Sarah\nGroup photo with Sarah (Sarah stays on stage)\nExclusive signed poster\nEarly entry into the venue

SUMMARY:The Accidentals
DESCRIPTION:Long before glowing acclaim from NPR and Billboard\, packed shows\, unforgettable festival appearances\, millions of streams\, and collaborations with everyone from BTS to Kaboom Collective\, the journey of The Accidentals commenced in a public high school classroom in Traverse City\, MI. As the story goes\, concertmaster violinist Savannah Buist and cellist Katie Larson raised their hands at the request for volunteers to play a music boosters concert and wound up being musical soulmates. After Sav and Katie attended a school presentation by The Moxie Strings\, their collective fate would be sealed forever. “If the Moxie Strings hadn’t come to our school\, we might not have pursued music professionally\,” admits Sav. \nSav and Katie transferred to Interlochen Arts Academy for the remainder of high school\, and since then they have released six full-length albums\, three EPs\, and two live albums\, scored the indie documentary “One Simple Question\,” and collaborated with Keller Williams\, Kaki King\, Tom Paxton\, Kim Richey\, Dar Williams\, and Mary Gauthier.  \nJoining Sav and Katie is Detroit multi-instrumentalist Katelynn Corll. The journey of The Accidentals has only just begun. “The goal of our music has always been shared experiences. Music helps us process things that are hard to process\,” says Sav. “A lot of the writing comes from touring\, and touring is just a myriad of extremes\, triumphs\, and failures. It’s how we connect with people in those moments that shape our experiences. Hopefully\, people can relate to something we’re creating in a way that feels like understanding. Maybe it offers a different perspective\, and that leads to less loneliness and more community.”

SUMMARY:Nick Shoulders & The Okay Crawdad
DESCRIPTION:This show has been rescheduled from an earlier date. Tickets purchased for the earlier date will be honored for this performance. \n“All Bad\,” the latest album from Nick Shoulders\, ultimately encapsulates everything that makes Nick’s inimitable form of country music so vital: a heady balance of dazzling musicianship and punk defiance\, coupled with gritty eccentricity and a generational connection to the roots of the genre. With a singing style inherited from his family’s vocal lineage\, Nick’s songs achieve the rare feat of imparting difficult truths while inciting a certain joyful abandon\, balancing a sound forged by years of hard travel with a heartfelt reverence for the origins of country music. In the spirit of Hazel Dickens and Jimmy Driftwood\, the incisive yet wildly jubilant All Bad vocally objects to the reckless destruction of the natural landscape and development run rampant\, while still offering plenty of joy and dance-ready rhythms. Spanning a variety of early country styles\, the album’s infectious harmonies shine alongside everything from jangling cajun waltzes to surf-rock infused bluesy ballads–all tied together by a voice seemingly out of place in this century\, yet ever ready to speak up about its problems.  \nReleased via Gar Hole Records (a label founded and co-owned by Shoulders)\, All Bad marks the first LP made with his longtime band\, the Okay Crawdad\, since 2019’s premier full-length Okay\, Crawdad and their subsequent pandemic-imposed hiatus. After writing most of the album from the front seat of a tour van\, the Fayetteville\, AR-based musician and bandmates Grant D’Aubin (harmonies/bass)\, Cheech Moosekian (drums) and Jack Studer (lead guitar) recorded the album in a home studio on the banks of the Mississippi River with New Orleans collaborators Ross Farbe and Sam Doores.  \nSurrounded by a singing style passed down from a time before microphones\, Nick’s childhood of bird call whistles and an over-exposure to southern gospel music eventually steered him toward an adolescence drumming for metal and punk bands\, and subsequent years as an active illustrator and member of Arkansas’s heavy music scene. After numerous personal calamities and a growing obsession with the rural musical traditions of his lifelong home\, Shoulders left the Ozarks and lived out of his van\, singing on the street corners of the west while slowly being drawn to the vibrance of the New Orleans dance and busking world. After forming in early 2018\, the ‘Okay Crawdad’ band flourished briefly in the wildly talented south Louisiana alt-country scene\, culminating in the release of ‘Rather Low’ by the popular YouTube channel Western AF\, catapulting Nick’s songs to a vastly wider audience right as Covid-19 and lockdowns ensued. Since then\, a rapid ascension into the world of touring music has seen Nick playing alongside the likes of Sierra Ferrell and at major festivals such as Stagecoach. With the hard rhythms and heavenly melodies of their newest release\, All Bad\, the band manages to concoct a body of work that is at turns sublimely freewheeling and profoundly illuminating\, yet primed to permanently warp the listener’s perspective to glorious effect. \nMaddy Kirgo of New Orleans opens.

SUMMARY:Suzanne Vega - Old Songs\, New Songs and Other Songs
DESCRIPTION:Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation\, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk revival of the early 1980s when\, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar\, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion\, Vega’s distinctive\, “clear\, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool\, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post\, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital\, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. \nBearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times)\, Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life\, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated\, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago. \nSuzanne Vega will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist\, Gerry Leonard\, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner\, Luka\, and more!

SUMMARY:Raul Malo
DESCRIPTION:When Raul Malo came on the scene as the lead singer of The Mavericks\, he already had a sound that didn’t fit the usual categories\, and a luxuriant voice that brought to mind Roy Orbison. The Mavericks were a country band\, but there was always more to the Mavericks than country: a Latin tinge\, seriously ambitious songwriting\, and a big dose of pure pop passion. For Raul Malo\, The Mavericks were just the beginning of an American musical journey. He has sung in English and Spanish\, and he’s at home with rock\, country\, Cuban music\, and the big-band jazz that fits his romantic vocals so beautifully. He’s sung Latin rock\, acoustic Americana\, and even children’s music. And his voice has only improved with age. It’s a stunning instrument that has the rare quality of being big and intimate at the same time. The Ark has been an ideal venue for Raul’s solo shows\, which are more personal than the music he’s made with The Mavericks\, and his Ark shows over the past decade have lingered in the memories of listeners and the club staff alike. Raul comes to Michigan with a new solo instrumental album\, “Say Less.”

SUMMARY:Josh Ritter
DESCRIPTION:The Ark helped spread Josh Ritter’s name among Michigan audiences when he made a standout performance at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in 2003\, and we’re proud that we\, along with Emmylou Harris and Paste magazine\, which named Josh one of the 100 greatest living songwriters in 2006\, spotted this monster talent in the making. Josh has gone on to record a dozen albums\, write a book or two\, tour with Jason Isbell\, and play much larger halls than The Ark. So it’s very special to us to invite Josh to perform in a rare small club appearance. He’s an entrancing performer\, a true master of the songwriter’s art. This is a special Works In Progress + Songs You Know solo show. Says Josh: “I’ve realized that a necessary part of working on records is finding the material that hangs together. I write A LOT of songs\, and not all of them play nicely with the others. The most useful (and fun) way to find a song’s heart is to periodically play some shows where I’m able to get it all out there and see how I feel about them. I’m really looking forward to these shows for the chance to get all these songs\, and some that are old friends\, out on the table for a good time.”

In the words of James Christopher Monger\, “Phillips has matured into . . . a quiet storm that dutifully blends Cat Stevens’ confident huskiness and Jackson Browne’s weary but warm observer of all things broken.” Of Glen’s album\, “Swallowed by the New\,” Chris Steffen of Allmusic.com writes\, “Songs like ‘Leaving Old Town’ and ‘Unwritten’ explicitly describe moving beyond the past and into the unknown.” Now signed to the acoustic-oriented Compass label\, Glen Phillips has evolved into one of the great folk-rock songwriters of our time\, still staying true to his Toad-like roots\, and The Ark is the place to hear him! Of his latest album\, “There Is So Much Here.” Glen says\, “I’ve seldom allowed myself to stay in one place for very long. I was lucky during the COVID lockdown to move in with my girlfriend\, now fianceé\, and to stay home for the longest stretch I’ve had since the birth of my daughter\, 20 years ago. After a life of travel and seeking out peak experiences\, I began to appreciate the subtle beauty of sitting still.” \nSinger-songwriter Chris Pureka opens.

SUMMARY:Save The Speakeasy Benefit Concert

SUMMARY:Vienna Teng
DESCRIPTION:“I was in a long-distance relationship with music for many years\,” jokes singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. Long-distance\, perhaps\, but long-running. In 2002\, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour\, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, The Late Show with David Letterman\, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed\, most recently Aims in 2013\, as well as the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer. Together with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence\, her work has built a devoted following across generations and continents. \nStill\, other pursuits have always beckoned. In 2022\, she launched a “music x climate action” community on Patreon\, combining monthly livestream shows with Zoom climate action sessions\, and hosting workshops between concerts that participants have described as “life-changing\,” “rocket fuel\,” and “the perfect antidote to despair.” \nThe long-distance phase is over. Now it’s time for communion – and moving forward. \nAre you ready to do more about climate change\, but feel a bit overwhelmed? Wish you knew where to put your limited time & energy? This workshop might be for you: \nDrawing on her recent years working in environmental sustainability\, Vienna will help you discover what enjoyable\, meaningful climate action looks like for you personally\, tailored to your unique circumstances\, interests\, and superpowers. You’ll get to know some fellow music lovers taking their own similar journeys\, and you’ll come away with practical first steps to actually make it happen. (Plus there might be a bonus music moment or two.) \nThe workshop will run for 2 hours and will be capped at 20 participants\, to make sure each person gets ample support. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/1217-climate-action-workshop-with-vienna-teng-the-ark-tickets-641584324987

SUMMARY:Victor Wooten and The Wooten Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius\, Victor Wooten is known for his solo recordings and tours\, and as a founding member of the Grammy-winning supergroup Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. He is an innovator on the bass guitar\, as well as a talented composer\, arranger\, producer\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Continuing the tradition of virtuosity forged by James Brown\, Funkadelic\, and Prince\, Victor will make you wonder how he could possibly be creating his incredible bass effects in real time. His show is a high-wire act on low-pitched strings that owes some of its inspiration to another Wooten mentor\, the inimitable Bootsy Collins. A multiple-time winner of Bass Player magazine’s Bass Player of the Year award and a five-time Grammy winner\, Victor Wooten is a musical experience not to be missed! Tonight Victor appears with brothers Joseph\, Roy\, and Regi Wooten.
