DESCRIPTION:Steve Poltz is not normal. He was born in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, but has lived most of his life in southern California\, and those geographic poles are quite likely responsible for his unhinged genius. With a cult following that includes fellow musicians\, regular folks and festival goers who stumble onto his performances\, there’s no common denominator to Steve’s fans. Steve toured and recorded with San Diego cult favorites The Rugburns (they still play annual sold-out reunion shows). But it was through his creative partnership with Jewel that he vaulted into the national spotlight; co-writing her multiplatinum Billboard Hot 100-busting smash\, “You Were Meant For Me\,” and continues to work with her to this day. \nOver the years\, Steve has built a fascinating solo catalog. No Depression crowned him\, “A sardonic provocateur with a lighthearted acoustic-driven wit\, suggesting at times a sunnier\, less psychedelic Todd Snider\, or maybe a less wan\, washed Jackson Brown.” Among other collaborations\, GRAMMY-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings tapped him to co-write “Leaders” on 2021’s Renewal and he’s co-written with Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood and even Mojo Nixon. \nSteve’s newest album is Stardust & Satellites\, produced by Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers.

SUMMARY:Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones
DESCRIPTION:When Grammy winner Dave Alvin and Grammy nominee Jimmie Dale Gilmore made the album Downey To Lubbock together in 2018\, they wrote the title track as a sort of mission statement. “I know someday this old highway’s gonna come to an end\,” Alvin sings near the song’s conclusion. Gilmore answers: “But I know when it does you’re going to be my friend.” Six years later\, they’re serving notice that the old highway hasn’t ended yet. “We’re still standing\, no matter what you might hear\,” they sing on “We’re Still Here\,” the final track to their new album Texicali. Due out Jun 21\, 2024 on Yep Roc Records\, Texicali continues to bridge the distance between the two troubadours’ respective home bases of California (Alvin) and Texas (Gilmore). \nThe album’s geographic theme reflects Alvin’s repeated journeys to record in Central Texas with Gilmore and the Austin-based backing band that has toured with the duo for the past few years. The 11 songs on Texicali also connect the duo’s shared fondness for a broad range of American music forms. On their own\, both have been prominent artists for decades. A philosophical songwriter with a captivating\, almost mystical voice\, Gilmore co-founded influential Lubbock group the Flatlanders in the early 1970s. Alvin first drew attention as a firebrand guitarist and budding young songwriter with Los Angeles roots-rockers the Blasters in the early 1980s. \nGilmore is primarily known for left-of-center country music\, while Alvin’s compass points largely toward old-school blues. But there’s a lot of ground to cover beyond those foundations\, and both artists also are well-known for transcending genre limitations. So it’s not surprising that they’ve spiked Texicali with cosmic folk narratives\, deep R&B grooves and even swinging reggae rhythms.

DESCRIPTION:It’s human nature to look back\, and to try to make sense of that which has gone by. For the luminous indie folk duo of Joshua Lee Turner and Allison Young\, it’s a question not only of what should be relinquished\, but also what might be worth taking with you. “There’s goodness in every decade of \nmusic. And there’s goodness in every season of life\,” Josh shares. “For us\, it’s about finding what’s golden in the past and bringing that forward.” \nThe pair share an eclectic nostalgia for sounds of the past—Jazz and Classical\, Golden Age musicals\, big bands of the ‘40s\, singer-songwriters of the ‘60s\, dewy indie rock of the early 2010s—as well as a passion for instrumental music and covers. These points of connection began online\, culminated in an impromptu recording session in Nashville\, and compelled an unexpected path forward.  \nThe duo’s first release together\, a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Crazy\,” gathered massive enthusiasm online as well as the fervent demand of one UK promoter that they tour overseas. Josh and Allison accepted the invitation and rushed to record an EP to have something—anything—to play for audiences\, audiences which sold out venues and applauded The (yet-to-be-named) Bygones with standing ovations before they even strummed a note. “It didn’t make any sense\,” Josh says. “We weren’t a band yet.” But to see The Bygones live is to comprehend the hype. Allison’s stylish\, luminescent presence and vocal finesse\, Josh’s astonishing technical aptitude\, and the palpable joy in their onstage dynamic create a live show experience that demands multiple encores.  \nRather than a band asking the world to listen\, the world asked these two musicians to be a band. Their debut album ‘The Bygones’ was released April 4\, 2024 on Tonetree.

Jackson holds a PhD in history\, is a tenured Associate Professor and Senior Fellow in National Security Studies\, as well as Fellow of Integrated Studies at Utah Valley University. He is also a frequent commentator in film documentaries including the HISTORY® Channel three-night event Abraham Lincoln\, which was Executive Produced by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin and featured former President Barack Obama among other history scholars. HTDS is non-partisan with Professor Jackson’s only agenda being to make legit\, scholarly researched American history more accessible and educational through entertaining stories. \nIn order for the entire audience to enjoy this unique sold out performance\, we highly encourage the audience to arrive and get seated before 8pm (doors are at 7:30pm). Attendees for this show will need to be able to walk up and down the stairs to the second floor of The Ark where the show takes place. \nThe first Blind Pilot album in eight years\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain emerged from a period of artistic crisis and the radical transformation of their creative ecosystem. “I went through a few years where I wasn’t able to write—I tried therapy\, I read books on writer’s block\, I went on writing trips\, but nothing was helping\,” says Israel Nebeker\, frontman for the Oregon-bred band. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire album in a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.” \nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like 2016’s And Then Like Lions. In a profound step forward for the band—whose lineup also includes drummer/co-founder Ryan Dobrowski\, bassist Luke Ydstie\, and multi-instrumentalist Kati Claborn—Blind Pilot’s fourth full-length unfolds with an exquisite fluidity\, fully harnessing the undeniable chemistry. “In the past we’ve always been very serious and intentional about the process\, but Josh often encouraged us to throw away our preconceived notions of what the songs were supposed to be\,” says Nebeker. “So much of the album came from all of us playing live together\, listening to each other and trusting our instincts\, and really getting to the core of the song\,” Dobrowski adds. The result: the most revelatory expression yet of Blind Pilot’s palpable reverence for music as a connective force. \nWhile Blind Pilot intends to tour principally as a quartet in support of the record\, the album includes contributions from longtime trumpeter/keyboardist Dave Jorgensen and vibraphonist Ian Krist. In bringing the album to life\, the band worked with a rich palette of instrumentation\, handling each track with equal parts extraordinary care and unbridled spontaneity. For both Dobrowski and Nebeker—who formed an early iteration of the band as college students in the mid-aughts—those moments of ineffably closeness serve as the lifeblood of Blind Pilot. “For me making this album felt like celebrating being together and still feeling that deep connection that’s been a throughline for our entire adult lives\,” Dobrowski says. “One of my very favorite things about music is the way it not only connects us as bandmates\, but allows us to connect to an audience—and then within that audience\, people end up connecting with each other. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies\, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base.  \nIt’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner\, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award. The band appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Show With David Letterman\,” “Conan O’Brien\,” “CBS This Morning\,” “Later…with Jools Holland\,” and “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in support of the album.  \nIn the years since the release\, the band left their beloved adopted home of Brooklyn and moved to Nashville. Now\, The Lone Bellow is back with Walk Into A Storm\, produced by legendary music producer Dave Cobb and featuring their lead single “Time’s Always Leaving.” The trio\, featuring Zach Williams (guitar/vocals)\, Kanene Donehey Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist)\, and Brian Elmquist (guitar)\, recorded this album in only seven days. The group’s first two albums graced the Billboard 200.

They wrote and composed music for the WGA award-winning Peacock Series Baking It starring Maya Rudolph\, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. The duo has also written songs and musical sketches for the hit animation show Rick and Morty\, Party Over Here (a Fox sketch show produced by The Lonely Island)\, the Peacock series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin\, Buzzfeed\, FunnyOrDie and Nickelodeon. Zach and Jess are currently developing TV and Film projects with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions\, David Wain (The State\, Role Models\, Wanderlust) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions. They also created and starred in Serious Music\, a digital series for ABC.  \nTheir improvised musical podcast Off Book has been praised by various online publications including Indie Wire\, USA Today\, Parade\, AV Club and Splitsider and been featured at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest Festival\, Moontower\, the world renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal\, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA. Zach and Jess were listed as one of Vulture’s “Comedians You Should and Will Know” and in early 2019 they released their first full-length musical comedy album The Calendar Album with Comedy Dynamics.

DESCRIPTION:These days\, every artist’s album needs to have a story. The music can’t speak for itself.  \nBut after 22 records\, why can’t Ani DiFranco’s work speak for itself? Yes\, her forthcoming album is shaped by stories — ones about reproductive freedom\, the double-edged sword of the pandemic\, identity and ever-evolving belief systems that have shaped each of its 11 songs. There are songs that were written in 2011 and in 2022; some for musicals\, others for children’s books. The album isn’t linear\, but it is inherently teeming with DiFranco’s spirit.  \nIt was paramount to the folk-feminist hero that listeners not be saddled with preconceived notions while diving into her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t. “I believe there is a rhyme and a reason as to why these songs have come together in this way now and I want people to experience this album as a journey\, a piece of art\, without being influenced by a cacophony of surrounding narratives.” \nWhile many of DiFranco’s albums were made more insularly\, she’s opened herself up to collaboration in recent years. For 21 of DiFranco’s 22 albums\, she opted to self-produce. With Unprecedented Sh!t\, she wanted to try working with a producer and tapped BJ Burton\, who produced one of her favorite albums\, Bon Iver’s 22\, A Million. With Burton’s help\, largely from afar\, they created soundscapes often using only DiFranco’s voice and guitar as the raw materials and manipulating them with effects and filters. “I really wanted to lean into the power of machines in a way that I never have before\, so BJ and I communicating through many layers of them in order to collaborate\, seemed apropos. This record was made almost entirely by me and BJ alone\, bouncing things back and forth.” \nThe title Unprecedented Sh!t is not only representative of how much of a sonic departure the 11-track album is from Ani’s other work\, but also a political and social commentary on the current state of the world. “We find ourselves in unprecedented times in many ways\, faced with unprecedented challenges. So\, our responses to them and our discourse around them\, need to rise to that level.” \nDiFranco has been known as a feminist icon and pioneer of DIY for nearly 35 years. Since founding her record label Righteous Babe Records in 1990\, she has released 22 albums\, traversing folk\, punk\, hip-hop\, soul and electronic genres and addressing a range of autobiographical\, political and social issues. While her first four albums Ani DiFranco (1990)\, Not So Soft (1991)\, and Imperfectly (1992)\, Puddle Dive (1993)\, harnessed a more raw sound\, Out Of Range (1994)\, Not A Pretty Girl (1995) and Dilate (1996) were more rooted in DiFranco’s folk ethos. She released eight more albums over the next 10 years\, earning a Grammy Award for her 2003 album Evolve and numerous nominations. Her most recent albums include 2008’s Red Letter Year and 2017’s Binary. Most recently\, fans have been thrilled by 2021’s Revolutionary Love and the 25th Anniversary Edition reissues of both her iconic 1997 live album Living In Clip and 1998’s Little Plastic Castle\, via Righteous Babe Records in 2023. \nDiFranco is also a poet\, author and Broadway performer. She released a collection of poems and paintings titled Verses in 2007. Her memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream was a New York Times Top 10 best seller in 2019\, and her children’s books The Knowing and Show Up and Vote are out now. DiFranco also recently completed a 5-month run on Broadway as ‘Persephone’ in the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical\, Hadestown.

DESCRIPTION:For over four decades the Wooten Brothers have been recognized as some of the most innovative musicians in existence and are collectively known as one of the most talented and dynamic band of brothers the world has ever known. Since they were young\, the five brothers have been a musical tour-de-force redefining the limits of jazz\, funk\, soul\, R&B\, rock\, and bluegrass.  \nVictor Wooten\, a five-time Grammy Award-winning artist\, has graced the cover of Bass Player Magazine five times. He is a founding member of the eclectic group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and is recognized as one of the greatest living bassist today often drawing comparisons to Jaco Pastorius\, and was named one of the “Top ten bassist of all time” by Rolling Stone Magazine. \nJoseph Wooten has a dizzying list of talents that is impressive even by the Wooten clan’s standards. Currently the keyboardist for the Steve Miller Band (since 1993)\, he is also a composer\, orchestrator\, motivational speaker\, and has been showcased as an amazing vocalist since he was a child. He has collaborated with the likes of Whitney Houston and Kenny G\, and when not touring with Miller\, leads his own band\, performs with Freedom Sings\, and even helps out his little brother as keyboardist\, vocalist\, and composer for The Victor Wooten Band.  \nRoy “Futureman” Wooten\, also a five-time Grammy Award winner\, is best known for his masterful drumming and percussion skills and is a founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Roy\, a seasoned drum set player\, is mostly known for his frenzied\, inimitable on-stage performances heightened by his surreal choice of instruments: his trademark inventions “The Drumitar” and “RoyEl” keyboard. He is also a philosopher\, researcher\, filmmaker\, and educator. His impressive solo career and “Black Mozart” projects scan the genres of classical\, jazz\, soul\, gospel\, and spoken word.  \nRegi Wooten’s signature guitar style of chording\, slapping\, tapping and frenzied strumming has earned him world-wide notoriety and comparisons to Jimi Hendrix\, Frank Zappa and Chuck Berry. In recent years\, Regi has performed with many artists including the legendary Ginger Baker. Regi\, known worldwide as “The Teacher”\, currently teaches music in Nashville\, TN and has taught many notable musicians. He was teaching his little brothers Joseph and Victor when he himself was only 9 years old.  \nTogether The Wooten Brothers bring an uncanny level of experience\, originality\, and musical expertise to the stage. DESCRIPTION:Kristian Matsson has never remained in one place for very long. Having spent much of the last decade touring around the world as The Tallest Man on Earth\, Matsson has captivated audiences using\, as The New York Times describes\, “every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around\, crouching\, stretching\, hip-twitching\, perching briefly and jittering away…Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk\, and his songs are troubadour ballads at heart.” \nThen came 2020\, when Matsson left New York City and returned to his farm in Sweden. There\, during that quiet\, dreary time of isolation\, he drowned out his thoughts by manically growing vegetables in his garden. When he tried writing again\, during those many months of collective forced solitude\, “I just found myself commenting on the darkness\,” Matsson says. “I lost my imagination.” Playing live\, music and inspiration returned near the end of 2021\, and his produce became less of a priority. “When I’m in motion\, I can focus on my instinct\, have my daydreams again. When I was finally able to tour again\, I started writing like a madman.” He eventually had twenty songs he wanted to record in ten days.  \nNow\, Matsson returns as The Tallest Man on Earth with Henry St.\, his sixth studio album following 2012’s There’s No Leaving Now\, full of “vivid imagery\, clever turns-of-phrase\, and devastating\, world-weary observations” (Under The Radar) and 2015’s Dark Bird Is A Home\, his “most personal record… surreal and dreamlike” (Pitchfork).

Though rooted in the language of an earlier age\, their songs transcend nostalgia with wit and a flair for the theatrical. On their third album West of Broadway\, vocalist Rachael Price (also of Lake Street Dive) and guitarist/singer/songwriter Vilray evolve their music’s previous dreaminess to achieve a refreshing angularity built on left-of-center instrumentation (e.g.\, vibraphone and alto saxophone coasting above the moody strains of baritone sax and trombone). Produced by Dan Knobler (Allison Russell\, Bahamas)\, West of Broadway unfolds in a series of sharply drawn vignettes inspired by a recent fascination with classic musicals—bringing their luminous vocals to offbeat tales of love and heartache along city streets. \n Recorded at the legendary Sear Sound in Manhattan\, West of Broadway took shape with the help of renowned musicians like saxophonist Steve Wilson (a former member of Chick Corea’s Origin sextet) and drummer John Riley (Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie). After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals. \nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio. \nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. Each December\, this event is a warm hearted lift-off to the holidays that has become an indispensable tradition for families in the greater Ann Arbor area and far beyond. Zindle\, The Ragbirds’ songwriter\, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist\, produces this gala event with the intention of joyfully interconnecting the performers and audiences of the Michigan music community.
