Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nWhen Grammy winner Dave Alvin and Grammy nominee Jimmie Dale Gilmore made the album Downey To Lubbock together in 2018\, they wrote the title track as a sort of mission statement. “I know someday this old highway’s gonna come to an end\,” Alvin sings near the song’s conclusion. Gilmore answers: “But I know when it does you’re going to be my friend.” \nSix years later\, they’re serving notice that the old highway hasn’t ended yet. “We’re still standing\, no matter what you might hear\,” they sing on “We’re Still Here\,” the final track to their latest album TexiCali\, which continues to bridge the distance between the two troubadours’ respective home bases of California (Alvin) and Texas (Gilmore). \nThe geographic theme reflects Alvin’s repeated journeys to record in Central Texas with Gilmore and the Austin-based backing band that has toured with the duo for the past few years. As Alvin puts it in the liner notes\, those road trips informed the music they made on TexiCali: \nFrom one part of the borderland to another\, through concrete swaths of traffic\, tract homes and shopping malls\, across vast rocky deserts of Joshua trees\, saguaros and ocotillo\, speeding by forgotten battlefields\, remote mining towns\, corrido barrooms\, cinder block churches and abandoned houses filled with abandoned dreams\, past Mission San Xavier del Bac\, Cochise’s Stronghold and Apache Pass\, into the shimmering lights of El Paso/Juarez before the seemingly eternal emptiness of West Texas\, traveling those 1\,400 miles somewhere between Nothingness and Everything.

Tickets may be purchased with no included fees in person at The Ark during box office hours. \nAcoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child\, flirting with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine.  \nKottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri\, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina\, then to New London and into the Navy\, with his twelve string. “The trip was not something I enjoyed\,” he has said\, “I was broke and met too many interesting people.” Discharged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues\, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder\, for the Scholar’s tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.)  \nAfter sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Takoma label\, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.  \nKottke’s 1971 major-label debut\, “Mudlark\,” positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein\, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still\, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce\, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol\, as records like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s live “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.  \nHis collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, “Clone\,” caught audiences’ attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called “Sixty Six Steps\,” produced by Leo’s old friend and Prince producer David Z.  \nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

DESCRIPTION:Sixpence None the Richer began taking shape in New Braunfels\, Texas in the early ‘90s\, when guitarist Matt Slocum met vocalist Leigh Nash at a church retreat. The group recorded a demo before eventually signing with R.E.X. Records. Their debut LP\, The Fatherless & the Widow\, appeared in 1993 and their sophomore effort\, 1995’s This Beautiful Mess won a Dove Award and was followed by the Tickets for a Prayer Wheel EP.  \nIn 1997\, Sixpence None the Richer released their self-titled album and two years later exploded globally when the track “Kiss Me”\, from that album\, was released as a single. The song has been featured in countless movies and TV shows and catapulted Sixpence None the Richer’s starpower into the mainstream\, earning airplay in more than ten different countries. \nAccolades continued as the band’s rendition of the La’s “There She Goes” also became a major hit. In fall 2002\, Sixpence None the Richer returned to form with Divine Discontent. The band’s cover of the Crowded House classic “Don’t Dream It’s Over” pushed Sixpence None the Richer’s name back into the charts in early 2003. Although the group quietly disbanded in 2004\, they remained active as individuals and continued to release music periodically\, including the albums Dawn of Grace and Lost in Transition. \nFast forward to 2024 and all-original members (Leigh Nash\, Matt Slocum\, Dale Baker\, and Justin Cary) have reunited and are writing and recording new music and preparing for a world tour. To observe the manifestations of a younger you’s inner life. To be honest\, it’s often cringy and anxiety inducing. With the benefit of hindsight\, our shortsightedness and misplaced fears and hopes seem so obvious.  \nAs I look back\, ten years later\, to the person I was when I made Ledges\, I see a young man full of ambition and naivety\, desperate for validation and a sense of belonging. I see a boy with a singular vision and a hell of a lot to learn.  \nThey say you have your whole life to make your first record and 18 months to make your second. Although Ledges isn’t technically my first album\, for all intents and purposes\, it feels like it. It was the one I spent years writing. Some songs were written on a mattress on the floor of a rented room I shared with a friend\, in a run down old house I moved into when I left my folks place at 17. Some I wrote in my first apartment in Seattle. One was written in the early hours of the morning\, waking up on a friend’s couch to a simple\, beautiful piano arrangement Abby wrote. One\, after the unexpected heroin overdose that resulted in the death of a friend. Another\, after briefly reigniting an old flame\, only to watch it quickly burn out.  \nEverything was new back then. The colors were brighter\, the highs higher\, the lows lower. Falling in love felt like the first time. Heartbreak felt like the end of the world. Ideas felt important and the future was a big\, empty canvas. \nThere’s a lot of self importance in all of this and ultimately this is just some record that some kid made. But to that kid this record felt like his whole world. And like all records\, it’s a little snapshot in time. And how lucky we are to have snapshots\, photographs of moments and memories that ground us in the reality we’ve lived. \nI don’t want to live in the past. But I’m grateful for this marker of how it once was. A little simpler\, a little cleaner\, a whole lot of potential. And maybe that’s a reminder that I’m living in that potential\, right now. This is the future I imagined and hoped for. This is the person I am now. And it’s nice to be able to look back and see how far I’ve come. Mainly recorded at Sound Emporium Studios and featuring guest appearances from singer/songwriters Lukas Nelson and Nikki Lane\, Trail Of Flowers ultimately fulfills her longstanding mission of making music that transcends all barriers of time. “I wanted to create something that makes people feel nostalgic for the past\, but excited about the future of music\,” Ferrell points out. \nInstantly proving her extraordinary capacity to merge timeless musicianship with lyrics exploring modern concerns\, Trail Of Flowers opens on “American Dreaming”: a world-weary yet soul-stirring track that speaks to the struggle to build a good life in a culture consumed by capitalism. Another song informed by her singular outlook on the modern world\, “Fox Hunt” takes the form of a furiously stomping epic driven by galloping rhythms and some feverish fiddle work from Ferrell. On “Rosemary\,” she delves further into her old-time roots and delivers the album’s most haunting moment: a stark but spellbinding story-song graced with a few bars of soulful yodeling. A profoundly gifted vocalist\, Ferrell often captures an entire world of feeling in just a single line\, particularly on tracks like “Dollar Bill Bar”—a swinging but wistful number on which she cycles from longing to regret to devil-may-care attitude with impossible ease. DESCRIPTION:“There’s a lot of existential stuff in these songs\,” says Amos Lee. “If you really listen to what’s in between the lines\, there’s a lot of grappling with your place in the world\, grappling with loss.  There’s a lot of grappling with the balance between bailing out the boat and rowing at the same time—the experience of writing music and playing songs while trying\, as we all are right now\, to make sense of a world that feels like it’s changing really quickly.”   \nOn his eleventh studio album\, Transmissions\, singer-songwriter Lee continues to expand his sonic range while sharpening his closely observed lyrics that squarely address death\, aging\, and love. The force behind such acclaimed albums as Mission Bell and Mountains of Sorrow\, Rivers of Song\, ever since his gold-selling 2005 debut Lee has been known for his association with a long list of collaborators and touring partners\, from Paul Simon to Zac Brown Band.  \nFor the new project\, he craved a return to an old-school style of recording\, working with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro\, New York that was built by drummer Lee Falco and his dad out of reclaimed wood from an old church (“it’s exactly what you’d think a studio in upstate New York should be\,” notes Lee). Playing live on the floor for long hours\, in close quarters\, they were able to capture the album’s twelve songs in less than a week.  \n“I really wanted us to be all in the room\, making music together\, listening to each other and responding to each other\,” says Lee. “In this age where you can do everything at home and fly it in\, there’s something really beautiful about getting in a room and starting at the top\, the drummer counting in the song and everybody just playing. I would call it vulnerability.”  \nDespite the simplicity of the set-up\, though\, Lee also augmented the band’s soulful\, folk-funk sound with arrangements that extend the scope of some songs. “I’ve done a lot of shows over the past few years with orchestras\,” he says\, “and I wanted to find a way to have miniature moments that could represent those experiences. If you listen to the end of ‘Night Light\,’ or ‘Built to Fall\,’ there are moments that express those ideas of collaboration and orchestration.”  \nTransmissions marks only the second time that Lee has produced his own album (following 2016’s Spirit)\, a daunting challenge even for someone so familiar with the musicians. But he was determined not to overthink or over-complicate the task.  \n“As a producer\, I had to have a clean and clear vision of what I wanted before I went in\,” he says. “Especially now that I’ve done ten albums. I’m not lighting a bunch of candles and trying to conjure the spirit—it’s either there or it isn’t. And it was there from Day One. We were playing the song ‘Beautiful Day\,’ and I thought\, ‘Okay\, here’s a song I have a demo for\, but I don’t have a full version in mind. I’ve never played it with anyone\, I’ve never shown it to anybody\, and it’s a bit of a weird\, herky-jerky tune.’ And the bass and drums kicked ass\, the guitar playing is really cool—so yeah\, I felt it from note one. I was never in doubt.”  \nThe’ last few years have been wildly productive for Philadelphia native Lee. After 2022’s Dreamland album (which featured “Worry No More\,” a Top Ten AAA hit and his biggest single in over a decade)\, he followed up with two full-length projects paying homage to musical heroes—My Ideal: A Tribute to ‘Chet Baker Sings’ and Honeysuckle Switches: The Songs of Lucinda Williams. He expresses his awe for these two renegade artists; Williams for her incomparable language and Baker for his delivery. “I love songs that have the ability to expose a wide range of emotions in a short song\,” he says. “That’s what my favorite songs always do.”  \nThe Baker album in particular had a strong influence on Lee as a vocalist. “I didn’t grow up singing anything other than what was on the radio\,” he says\, “and when I started playing guitar\, it was John Prine and Dylan and Bill Withers and this classic songwriter stuff\, but also all this ‘90s R&B that I loved. I’d never approached what we’re calling jazz—the classics\, the songbook—and listening to Chet singing and singing along with him was like\, ‘Oh\, my God\, how is he doing this?’ It was like taking a master class in control and where to use your voice. That level of singing\, that level of musicianship\, was hugely inspirational—you don’t have to sing loud all the time. You can be really vulnerable\, and soft\, and really be at your best.”  \nTransmissions is Lee’s first release of original music on his own label\, Hoagiemouth Records. “It’s just a sign of the times\,” he says. “Things have really changed for someone like me\, and I’m going to adapt. I always wanted to have some kind of small label\, so it’s a cool opportunity.” (The imprint is distributed through the Thirty Tigers company\, which Lee is especially excited about since he and president David Macias are friends through fantasy baseball.)  \nFresh off of some dates with Willie Nelson and heading into a co-headlining tour with the Indigo Girls\, Amos Lee notes that his attitude about being embraced by his peers and his idols has transformed over the years\, and that his gratitude deeply informs the emotions throughout Transmissions.  \n“I just appreciate everything a lot more now\,” he says. “When you’re younger\, you get it\, but you don’t really get it because you’re like ‘Oh\, cool—my first tour ever and I’m opening for Bob Dylan? Cool.’ Or Norah Jones\, the biggest artist in the world\, bringing you out right off the street. How do you appreciate that? I was just sort of clueless\, honestly. Not out of malice\, but you have no context.  \n“So now I’m just grateful to have a career\,” he continues. “I’m grateful to be asked to share the stage with folks who I respect and admire and love and want to learn from and want to support. Now it’s about really being present while it’s happening and knowing that this is not promised\, none of this is destiny. It’s a lot of chance. So I’m making sure to really enjoy and appreciate all these opportunities.”

DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams’ lyrics contain bouquets of optimism\, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. Williams strongly believes that all of us possess our own power and ability to achieve\, and she rejects the exceptionalism that encourages us to “admire that yonder star\,” while making us feel small and insignificant; unworthy of shining on our own but hoping to catch enough distant light to inspire some tiny accomplishment. Williams has always been very interested in how to control our future and this album has to do with the fact that at some point\, you just can’t. \nLike everyone else\, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album\, her 12th studio recording\, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020\, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell\, who produced the track and played guitars\, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar. When told they had to postpone a mid-March mixing date\, Campbell said he wasn’t feeling well anyway. Turns out he’d contracted a serious case of COVID-19. That was a clear sign that at some point\, you have to meet life where it meets you …the common thread throughout that these songs\, the willingness to meet life as it arrives. \nDar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she’s had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90’s Boston scene\, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers\, Berklee jazz musicians\, slam poets\, and folk artists\, like Patty Griffith\, Melissa Ferrick\, the Throwing Muses\, Vance Gilbert\, and Jonatha Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album\, The Honesty Room\, in 1994\, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. \n“Good and bad things happen\, and it’s not necessarily a reward or indictment. I’ve just got to meet it.” Williams observes. “Like\, I’m bringing my whole life to this moment; it will surprise me\, challenge me\, show me where I was wrong\, even make a fool out of me\, but my job is to show up and not take adversity personally. Real happiness doesn’t have to feel like Snoopy dancing with Woodstock; it can just be knowing you have the resilience to meet whatever comes to you. I will call that a good life.”

DESCRIPTION:Comprised of Don Mitchell\, Auyon Mukharji\, Harris Paseltiner and David Senft\, four likeminded multi-instrumentalists who first met at Williams College in 2009\, Darlingside’s career has been defined by the elegance of their compositions and the unity of their four voices. Their talent for harmony and melodic world-building is part of what garnered praise from outlets like NPR\, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker\, and what has created demand worldwide for their extraordinary live performances. Becoming beautifully unindividualized has\, in other words\, worked very well for Darlingside in the past. With a vigor and discipline more common to graduate-level writing workshops than to indie rock\, Darlingside has\, over the years\, experimented with all manners of idiosyncratic methods for elevating and upholding a truly democratic process of songwriting—processes that include multiple rounds of group writing and recording exercises—all with the aim of escaping the trap that bands with multiple songwriters often fall into: ego-driven infighting and artistic incoherence. \nIt’s a rare thing and becoming rarer by the day: a group of musicians with that emulsifying magic to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. And to see Darlingside perform live is to confirm this special chemistry. With the release of Everything Is Alive (2023) the band will\, for the first time\, take to the road without Dave Senft. Instead of filling his spot directly\, the band has wisely chosen to honor the special chemistry of the foursome by letting those arrangements live on the recordings without obligation to faithfully recreate them onstage. While Dave remains a contributing member of the band\, on tour Darlingside will perform in a completely different configuration altogether—a configuration that will\, at times\, include the album’s drummer Ben Burns\, singer Molly Parden\, and others—proving again how the group can adroitly rearrange themselves for the breaking of a new and different day.
