SUMMARY:Max Gomez
DESCRIPTION:Singer/Songwriter Max Gomez grew up in Taos\, New Mexico\, where he fell under the influence of country blues early on and developed a songwriting style that was uniquely his. As a budding performer\, Max apprenticed in the rarefied musical micro-climate of northern New Mexico\, where troubadours like Michael Martin Murphey and Ray Wylie Hubbard helped foster a Western folk sound both cosmic and country. \nHe received critical acclaim upon the release of his debut album Rule The World (2013\, New West Records); and his subsequent EP\, Me and Joe (2017\, Brigadoon Records)\, contained a freshly minted classic\, “Make It Me.”  \nHe has shared billing on hundreds of stages with stalwarts of the genre like James McMurtry\, Buddy Miller\, John Hiatt\, Patty Griffin\, Tommy James & The Shondells\, Jeff Beck\, and Johnny Depp. Judging by the company he keeps\, Gomez is poised to emerge as a prominent voice of Americana’s next generation.  Max’s latest album Memory Mountain\, was released in August and is currently in the top 50 of the AMA / CDX Top 200 Album Chart.

SUMMARY:Emily Scott Robinson
DESCRIPTION:On her third album with Oh Boy Records\, and her fifth since beginning her career a decade ago\, Emily Scott Robinson once again unveils her mastery as a performer and storyteller. With her 2026 release Appalachia — recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios with Grammy-nominated producer Josh Kaufman — Robinson opens herself up to experimentation and sings in her crystal-clear voice about resilience\, love\, grief and hope. \nRobinson’s talent is no surprise to the music industry — she’s now a veteran touring artist\, both at home and abroad. Her records Traveling Mercies (2019) and American Siren (2021) each landed high on Rolling Stone’s “Best Country and Americana Albums” and Stereogum’s “10 Best Country Albums” year-end lists. She’s been lauded by the Washington Post\, Billboard\, American Songwriter and No Depression\, and earned the 19th spot on NPR’s “100 Best Songs of 2021” with her song “Let ‘Em Burn.” \nIt was her 2020 release “The Time for Flowers\,” an anthem of hope recorded at home in the midst of the global pandemic\, that caught the attention of Oh Boy Records\, the independent label founded by John Prine in 1981. Robinson jumped at the opportunity to join the free-spirited and beloved record label carrying on her hero’s legacy. \nRobinson believes the songs on Appalachia are the best she’s ever written — she sings about her grandmother slipping into dementia\, a cash-only saloon full of characters\, and gratitude for life\, despite its hardships. The album features a duet with Grammy winner John Paul White that celebrates the kind of  love that comes with scars and age\, and a hymn for anyone who’s ever failed or fallen short. \n“There’s this thing I do with every record I make\,” she says. “I knit a prayer into it\, and I ask for all these songs to find their way to everyone who needs them. I ask these songs to be of service\, to help people find and experience joy.” \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

With over 20 original albums and compositions featured on HBO\, NBC\, Showtime\, and more\, Julin’s music spans genres and generations. SUMMARY:Alice Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Here I Am\, Nashvillian songstress Alice Wallace declares on her new album\, released summer 2024\, via Mule Kick Records.  It’s a title that hints at her deeply personal\, confessional songwriting style\, one that invites the listener to gaze at her beating heart as each intimate secret pours out\, propelled by a powerful\, expressive delivery that marks her as one of the true vocal talents of her generation. \nAlice does not hide behind the microphone but uses it to amplify everything inside her champing to get out. She’s survived the highs and lows of life\, love\, and the music industry and finally produced the album she feels she was destined to make. Here I Am\, she says\, the real Alice Wallace. \nThis album marks a return to themes of self-examination after several collections that featured predominantly story songs. “I needed to make a record that was really true to myself\, both for me and for my fans who have encouraged me in ways I am so grateful for\,” Alice explains. “Songs are how I process. And writing this album helped me process so much of what has happened in the last few years.” \nCuttingly self-exploring\, delivered with emotionality\, and with just the right pop Americana sensibilities\, Here I Am is Alice Wallace’s most expansive album yet. For fans of songwriters who turn personal heartbreak into musical gold and for anyone who loves a powerful\, full ranged\, expressive voice\, Here I Am is not to be missed. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Palmyra
DESCRIPTION:Established in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley\, Palmyra captures the collective spirit of three Virginia natives: Teddy Chipouras\, Mānoa Bell\, and Sasha Landon. \nPalmyra straddles at least two musical worlds. They are\, on one hand\, a band from the South that plays traditional instruments and indeed once lived in the old-time locus of Floyd\, Virginia. Comparisons to and a kinship with The Avett Brothers and even Old Crow Medicine Show are inevitable. On the other hand\, Palmyra writes about grief\, gender dysphoria and identity\, and coming of age in songs that flirt with soul\, post-rock\, and even emo; the South\, too\, is the place of My Morning Jacket\, Band of Horses\, Cat Power\, and now\, Palmyra. \nThe band’s first full length LP\, Restless\, is out March 2025 on Oh Boy Records. Framed by moments of struggle\, solidarity\, and hard-won growth\, Restless is an unqualified ringer for anyone who loves the space where the roar of indie rock collides with raw folk. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. It is presented live\, and also livestreamed on The Ark’s Facebook page. \nTonight’s show is FREE (nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers).

SUMMARY:Caleb Caudle & The Sweet Critters
DESCRIPTION:Sweet Critters\, the new album from Caleb Caudle was produced by Ben Tanner and John Paul White\, recorded at Sun Drop Sound in Florence\, AL\, and mastered by Kim Rosen at Knack Mastering. The album features Allison Russell\, Aoife OʼDonovan\, John Paul White\, and Caudleʼs own touring band. \nJust as the marbled salamanders emerge from under damp logs and leaves\, the mushrooms—smooth\, pearlescent ones and spongy morels—turn on like night lights glowing in the dark\, and the long-horned beetles and regal moths begin buzzing. The fiddlehead ferns and trout lilies curl inward\, a copperhead slowly swerves\, and a fox steps into the moonlight looking for prey. It is here\, in that restless middle of the night\, under cover of darkness\, where Caleb Caudle’s sixth studio LP Sweet Critters is nestled. \nThrough sometimes shadowy arrangements that creep and lurk\, Caudle continues to mine both the brightest and murkiest corners of his imagination\, finding that purest of points where tenderness and grit collide\, inspired by musical heroes like Buddy Miller and Guy Clark\, and mentors like Elizabeth Cook and John Paul White. It was White who Caudle tapped to produce Sweet Critters\, along with Ben Tanner\, at the duo’s Florence\, Alabama studio Sun Drop Sound. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Half Gringa
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of her first two full-length releases as Half Gringa\, Chicago-based singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and songwriter Isabel Olive has demonstrated stunning emotional intelligence and songwriting elegance. And it has not gone unnoticed. The Chicago Reader named Half Gringa’s debut\, Gruñona as among Chicago’s Best Albums of the Decade while VICE named her sophomore full-length\, Force to Reckon as one of 22 Essential Albums of 2020\, saying that Half Gringa specializes in “empathic and twangy songs about grief and getting stuck in your own thoughts.” \nTrue as that may be\, her third and latest album Cosmovisión represents a shift. Recorded in Chicago by veteran Califone and Iron & Wine producer Brian Deck\, Cosmovisión captures Olive at her most self-possessed\, addressing “mythology\, mortality\, and everything in between\,” ideas that Olive says are “too hot to touch\, too huge to hold.” Indeed\, Half Gringa seems to revel in addressing what cannot be grasped or expressed so easily. Olive commonly switches between English and Spanish in her songs. It’s a tribute –– as is the band name –– to her upbringing by a Venezuelan mother and an American father in a Midwestern town. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Heather Mae
DESCRIPTION:Heather Mae\, the acclaimed social justice singer-songwriter\, fearlessly bares her soul in her music\, creating an intimate space of shared vulnerability for her listeners. Her unbridled honesty\, both on and off stage\, has cultivated a devoted fanbase and garnered recognition\, including accolades like the winner of the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Songwriter Showcase and Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Artist-Activist of the Year award. \nIn her 2019 release\, “Glimmer\,” Heather Mae crafts a luminescent masterpiece\, drawing parallels to vocal powerhouses Adele and Sara Bareilles. With storytelling depth reminiscent of Florence Welch\, the record uniquely centers on mental health\, with each lyric unveiling a portrait of resilience and self-discovery. \nPositioned on the cusp of unveiling her upcoming post-pandemic double record\, Mae embarked on a mission to address the stark gender disparity for music producers—a mere 4% representation by women. In 2023\, Heather Mae rallied a dynamic collective of women and non-binary talents in Nashville\, assembling luminaries like producer ZDAN and Lollies\, alongside guest artists such as Grammy award-winning musician Allison Russell and the extraordinary duo Sistastrings. Together\, they crafted two electrifying albums in two distinct genres\, showcasing the unparalleled talent and versatility of women and non-binary music makers. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Pete Muller
DESCRIPTION:Pete Muller has spent much of his adult life walking a tightrope between two vastly different worlds.  \n“One part of me is a very practical\, analytical thinker\,” says the gifted singer/songwriter and innovative business leader\, “and the other is this creative artist who can’t help but express what’s going on in his soul. For a long time\, I thought I had to choose between the two\, but I’ve realized that I can love both sides of myself\, that it’s AND\, not OR.”  \nMore Time\, Muller’s captivating new album\, is proof of that. Recorded in Memphis with producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell\, Margo Price) and featuring a duet with Lisa Loeb\, the collection marks a dramatic leap forward for Muller\, who finds himself exploring the push and pull of responsibility and desire\, predictability and adventure\, commitment\, and temptation. Where Muller’s previous work leaned more towards carefully arranged folk and roots\, More Time is a freewheeling slice of rock and soul captured with an all-star band including celebrated bassist Dave Smith (Al Green\, Wilson Pickett)\, famed Texas guitarist Will Sexton (Joe Ely\, Roky Erickson)\, Memphis organist Rick Steff (Lucero\, Cat Power)\, and longtime Wilco drummer Ken Coomer. The result is an ecstatic exploration of what it means to be human in all its messy\, mixed-up contradictions\, a sometimes-exultant\, sometimes-pensive meditation that embraces AND over OR as it revels in the joy of discovering—and becoming—the people we’re meant to be. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Humbird
DESCRIPTION:Humbird (Siri Undlin) is a Minneapolis based singer-songwriter\, poet\, and storyteller inspired by the crystalline chill of her home state’s northern winters. Undlin twines experimental indie folk rock\, environmental Americana\, and orchestral compositions into lush landscapes of mesmerizing sound. \nReleased in September 2019\, her debut full length album\, Pharmakon\, was received with remarkable critical acclaim and has amassed over 20 million streams since its release. After the release of her sophomore album Still Life (2021) she was chosen as the winner of the 2021 Kerrville Folk Festival’s song-writing competition and went on to teach songwriting at both Sisters Folk Festival and Rocky Mountain Folks Fest. 2023’s tour highlights included her First Avenue main stage debut\, appearances at Sisters Folks Festival\, Mile of Music & Rocky Mountain Folks as well as direct tour support for Watchhouse\, Mipso and Indigo De Souza\, collectively covering most of the country. Her third third full length album ‘Right On’ was released on April 12 and has been her loudest\, most notable record to date. \nA Humbird live performance is intimate and earthy\, literal and metaphorical.  The band nimbly prances around the lilt of Undlin’s unfaltering fervent and haunting voice – the focal point.  Although the songs and stories hold their own\, the embellishments the band supply add the perfect splash of timbre and color to deliver a dynamic and engaging performance. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:Fantastic Cat
DESCRIPTION:They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY\, The Beatles\, The Traveling Wilburys\, The Highwaymen\, Monsters of Folk\, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway\, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated 2022 debut\, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a wildly satisfying collection of folk-rock\, country\, Americana\, and good old rock & roll” that offers “equal doses of Dylan and Springsteen\,” the album earned the vocal-trading\, instrument-swapping collective their national TV debut\, sold-out headline dates around the US and Europe\, festival performances everywhere from Sundance to Take Root\, and a song in the Showtime series Tulsa King. In 2023\, the unlikely four-piece teamed up with all-star producer Butch Walker for a 50th anniversary take on Wings’ “Band On The Run\,” which prompted even more love from Rolling Stone\, who dubbed them “the Harlem Globetrotters of Americana.”  \nIndividually\, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. Paste declared Don DiLego’s latest album a “stunner.” NPR said Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter.” Rolling Stone called Brian Dunne’s new record “the sleeper album of the year” and praised Mike Montali’s band\, Hollis Brown\, as “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland.” Collectively\, though\, the four transcend their respective roots\, emerging as velvet-clad rock and roll cooperative far greater than the sum of its parts.  \nThey say some cats are born fantastic; others have fantasy thrust upon them. These guys are somewhere in the middle. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:The Wellermen
DESCRIPTION:Bass singing folk group The Wellermen were discovered during the viral Sea Shanty trend of early 2021. The four had only met in person once with members Bobby Waters & Luke Taylor based in the US and Jonny Stewart & Sam Pope based in the UK. The four members’ lives were to change when they dueted with a seemingly innocuous ‘Sea Shanty’ (Wellerman) on TikTok. Since the release of the now ubiquitous TikTok\, it’s been viewed 100m+ times across multiple platforms and continents\, and has seen The Wellermen appear at events like The Brits\, shows like Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Take Away\, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and The Colbert Show & ABC News Australia. The Wellermen used their moment of unexpected virality for lasting good\, raising money via proceeds from ‘Wellerman’ for the Marine Conservation Society\, giving back to the seas.  \nSince then the group have gone on to release their debut album containing even more viral hits\, from ‘Misty Mountains’ and ‘Nancy Mulligan’ to the North Sea Trend phenomenon ‘Hoist The Colours’ which reached #3 on the global TikTok sound chart in February 2024. The group have achieved 150m streams to date and amassed a global audience of millions in the process. \nThe Wellermen embark on their debut USA tour in June 2024\, with their hotly anticipated follow up album due for release Winter 2024. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from Ford Philanthropy. SUMMARY:David Wilcox
DESCRIPTION:David Wilcox is a penetrating storyteller. The revered folk musician has an effortless talent for spinning lyrics that quietly cut deep\, and crafting melodies that seamlessly ride the plot twists and turns. Wilcox handily exemplifies the power of lyrical and musical catharsis \nThe Ohio native with the warm baritone found his artistic muse in North Carolina during the mid-1980s. In 1987 he released his debut album\, “The Nightshift Watchman\,” which led to winning the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1988.Thirty-plus years and twenty-plus albums later\, Wilcox won top honors in the 23rd annual USA Songwriting Competition in 2018 for his effervescent “We Make the Way by Walking.” Wilcox has deservedly earned praise over the years in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, and Rolling Stone\, to name a few. Today\, Wilcox is still earning his admirers with storytelling that cuts deep into the soul and observes the human condition from both the nerve center and the outside looking in. That kind of storytelling is certain to become a good friend. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. SUMMARY:Rachael Kilgour
DESCRIPTION:We first heard this songwriter as one half of the duo Sound an Echo\, and then we had her in the Family Room during the pandemic. Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere\, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest\, Rachael has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center\, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties\, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014\, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath\, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rachael was awarded a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to focus on a songwriting project about the life and recent death of her father\, and the album\, “My Father Loved Me\,” is out now\, and it’s terrific. \nThe Ark’s Artist Spotlight Series is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund. SUMMARY:Aleksi Campagne
DESCRIPTION:Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary\, indie-folk take on the time-honored fiddle-singing tradition. When playing live\, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and leading his four-piece band. His original music blends folk song writing with an edgy\, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice\, violin and looping-effect pedals. He’s not just a folksinger with a guitar! Although he’s coming to The Ark with his first full-length album\, “For the Giving\,” Aleksi Campagne is not new to the stage. At five years old\, he began performing alongside his mother\, Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor. At 19 he moved  to Paris to study under jazz violin legend Didier Lockwood. At 21\, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin\, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And\, by 25\, Aleksi had graced the lineups of some of Canada’ most beloved folk festivals—including the Mariposa Folk Festival\, the Regina Folk Festival\, and the Northern Lights Festival\, among others.

The Nashville-based indie pop singer/songwriter\, originally from Rhode Island\, displays craftsmanship beyond her years\, evident through her use of salient detail\, raw emotion\, and poignant word choice to describe moments “exactly as they feel.” \nIn spring 2018\, she was crowned Grand Champion of the Mid-Atlantic Singer-Songwriter Competition\, and the following June she delivered a Tedx Talk at Firefly 2018\, discussing the importance of honesty rooted in her songwriting process. \nMarielle Kraft’s debut studio EP\, “The Deep End” officially released on July 12th\, 2019\, is described by The Music Mermaid as “song after song of mini pop addictions.” In February 2020\, Marielle Kraft co-released an “anthemic” and “heart-filled” single with Joshua Howard entitled “In It Together”\, which quickly gained traction across platforms. \nHer October 23rd single\, “Portland\,” breathtakingly captures the moment we find ourselves in\, and speaks volumes of the young artist’s songwriting abilities. \nMarielle Kraft has shared stages with names as big as Jon McLaughlin\, Ava Max\, and Betty Who. Her “winning personality\,” “genuine connection\,” and “gift for story telling” on stage have fueled the ever-growing crowds at each of her shows\, with no signs of slowing down. \nWithout missing a beat\, Marielle Kraft released back to back singles to kick off 2021\, both of which found major traction on Tiktok before becoming fully studio produced releases. “Everyone But Me” (February 19th) and “We Were Never Friends” (March 24th) feature a more developed sound than seen from Marielle before\, and have cultivated her biggest streaming debuts to date. With more new releases on the way\, Kraft is on track for an even bigger 2021. \nSince leaving her full-time teaching career to pursue a life committed to creating music\, Marielle Kraft has promise to follow suit to artists like Julia Michaels and Maisie Peters as the young songwriter makes a growing impact in the indie pop scene. \nThis is a FREE show. Nonperishables accepted for Food Gatherers.
