Kiltro is the brainchild of Chilean-American singer songwriter Chris Bowers Castillo. Conceived in the lively, bohemian port city of Valparaiso, Chile, Kiltro draws much of its thematic energy from Latin American folk artists, making for an emotive and stylistically unique merging of older genres with contemporary ones. There are lots of terms people have used for Kiltro. Zapatos-gaze. Indie experimental. Chilean-gringo. Latin folk porteño. But this is a case, even more than most, where labels don’t tell you much—you really have to experience Kiltro for yourself. The word “kiltro” or “quiltro” is Chilean slang for a mixed-breed dog. The Kiltro trio recently released its debut album, “Creatures of Habit.”
