Chris Bathgate is southeast Michigan’s answer to Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. NPR has called him “a skilled purveyor of lovely gloom”—but, they add, “the Michigan native invests his songs with warm, rustic beauty, which makes everything too pretty to function as a true downer.” The Ark was one of the places Chris got his start as a songwriter, and we’ve watched as each of his albums has grown in depth and ambition. Chris’s songs have literary influences ranging from Kurt Vonnegut to John Steinbeck, and his live shows are unusually inventive, including poetry, loop pedals, electronic bows, and … well, we’ll see! Chris has broken out of the Michigan scene in the past few years and was featured on an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Ypsilanti songwriter Misty Lyn is special guest. Join us as Chris Bathgate releases his album “The Significance of Peaches.”
