NIGHT MANAGER (Part-time)

The Ark is seeking an enthusiastic, capable Night Manager to work 1-3 nights per week (5-20 hours).  The Night Manager represents Ark management at the venue during performances by providing excellent customer service to our audience and performers and creating a great work environment for our volunteers.  Responsibilities include supervising volunteers and managing all “front of house” activities during Ark shows, including concessions, merchandise, membership, ticket scanning, and ushering.  This position reports to the House Manager and works closely with the Operations Director, Tech Manager, Sound Tech Volunteers, and Box Office Staff.  Specific duties include:

MANAGE NIGHTLY OPERATIONS

  • Serve as an agent of The Ark and a representative of Ark management to patrons, performers, and Volunteers

  • Communicate effectively with Ark patrons, performers, and Volunteers

  • Complete regular nightly Manager tasks

  • Supervise bar and food service operations

  • Supervise all concession and merchandise cash handling operations

  • Complete cash register and merchandise reporting

  • Effectively manage emergency or crisis situations

  • Effectively communicate nightly details or challenges requiring follow-up attention

SUPERVISE CLUB VOLUNTEERS

  • Assign and coordinate Volunteer staffing for nightly front-of-house operations

  • Train Volunteers and introduce new tasks and roles night of show

  • Understand, implement and effectively communicate Ark policies and procedures

  • Assist in facilitating clear and positive communication between Volunteers and Ark management

  • Understand those areas that need to be handled by other Ark staff and appropriately defer to Ark management as necessary

  • Maintain effective communication with the House Manager and other Ark management staff

 MANAGE NIGHTLY SHOW DETAILS & ARTIST COMMUNICATION

  • Interact with artists and touring personnel the night of the performance

  • Provide hospitality items to artists as reflected in performer contracts

  • Complete artist settlement sheet and provide artist payment after the show

  • Communicate with Tech Manager and/or Sound Tech Volunteer

  • Collect and share show details with Volunteers, Sound Tech, and Box Office Staff

  • Coordinate sponsorship announcements and special arrangements

  • Coordinate special event details on an as-needed basis

OTHER

  • Fill staffing needs for special events and offsite events as required and available

  • Complete certification or training requirements as needed in relation to house operations

  • Some lifting required

  • Related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required availability of 1-3 nights per week from approximately 6:00 pm-midnight; some weekend hours required

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to effectively manage and interact with a variety of people in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment

  • Ability to train, supervise, motivate, and delegate tasks to a diverse and always changing Volunteer staff

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work well under pressure with minimal supervision

  • Must be comfortable with cash handling, cash register operation, and merchandise sales

  • Strong math skills and attention to detail

  • Prior experience managing volunteers in a high-energy public setting preferred

  • Prior experience in a theater, food service or retail environment a plus

  • Must be able to complete and maintain related certification and training requirements

TECHNICAL MANAGER (Part-time)

The Ark is seeking an experienced sound technician to serve as our part-time Technical Manager.  The Technical Manager assists the Operations Director in managing The Ark’s production and technical operations and is responsible for running sound for 10-15 shows per month.  This 15-20 hour/week position is responsible for advancing technical requirements with artists and tour managers; serving as lead sound tech on identified shows; managing and mentoring The Ark’s technical crew; and maintaining The Ark’s technical equipment.

Duties Include:

PRE-SHOW

  • Advance technical requirements with the artist/tour manager as identified by the Operations Director

    • Review show advance information, add show information to the tech webpage

    • Check that there are capable sound technicians, lighting techs, and/or broadcasting staff scheduled for every show

    • Schedule volunteer loaders as needed

SHOW

  • Sound Engineer for 10-15 shows/month:

    • Greet artists and touring crew, assist artists with load in and load out (including heavy lifting), set the stage and operate a sound check to the artist’s satisfaction, mix the live concert and/or assist a traveling sound technician, tear down the stage following the performance and restoring equipment to pre-performance settings

  • Supervise artist load-ins as identified by the Operations Director

LIVESTREAM BROADCAST

  • Provide or delegate sound, lighting, video and/or broadcasting staffing for livestreams from The Ark

  • Provide or delegate broadcasting staffing for livestreams with artists streaming remotely

TECH CREW MANAGEMENT

  • Participate in bi-monthly sound tech meetings

  • Communicate with sound techs via email group

  • Help research and implement improvements and changes to the production set up

TECH CREW MENTORING

  • Mentor tech volunteers and have constructive conversations about what they need to learn to get to where they want to be (including hands on club training or informational sessions)

  • Provide phone support to tech crew

  • Orient new sound techs

  • Track the progress of volunteer techs and make sure they are capable of the shows they are working in various capacities (sound, lights, video, broadcast)

  • Analyze the existing process of the transition from assistant tech to lead tech and recommend improvements

  • Help implement improvements to the existing process of the transition from assistant tech to lead tech

  • Assist Operations Director in hosting a quarterly tech recruitment information session

TECH EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

  • Maintain club sound equipment and stage lights

  • Request production supplies (gaff tape, CDs, bulbs, etc)

  • Analyze and recommend new equipment and repair needs for annual budget

  • Inventory equipment quarterly

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven expertise in live sound reinforcement

  • Ample and recent experience running a digital sound board, such as the Yamaha CL3 used at The Ark, in live performance settings.

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment

  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work well with artists, touring crews, and others

  • Confidence under pressure

  • Ability to test and repair broken equipment preferred

  • Experience training and mentoring other technicians a plus
