Sound Tech Volunteer
The Ark takes pride in its reputation for consistently great-sounding performances. We achieve these results with a largely volunteer sound production staff, using a JBL sound system that is compliments of Harman International.
If you have completed The Ark’s advanced sound course, or have extensive sound experience, you are eligible to volunteer as a sound tech at Ark performances. Tech volunteers arrive at an arranged time to meet the artist and load in the artists' equipment, help set-up the stage, run sound and are expected to stay until the end of the show for stage breakdown and performer equipment packing. Punctuality and a commitment to the entire performance are necessary.
To become an Ark sound tech volunteer, you must first be able to commit to at least 3 shows a month, however, to really learn the board, we recommend making yourself available much more in the beginning.
First we will ask that you volunteer as a club volunteer working with the concessions and ushering so that you are familiar with how a typical show operates at The Ark. This time commitment will be 4-5 hours in one night.
After participating as a club volunteer, you will be asked to sign up as an assistant sound tech for at least 2 shows. This time commitment will be more like 6-8 hours depending on when the performers arrive and when they leave. We will also introduce you to our email group, a forum for discussion on tech issues and scheduling, and our tech website for selecting and signing up to work at shows. At this time, you will be asked to send out an introduction to the entire email group so that they can “meet” you and learn about your interest in sound and The Ark, as well as find out about your technical experience.
We look forward to your participation, however, if the club manager should decide that you have acted inappropriately towards any staff, performers, volunteers or patrons, you may be terminated as a volunteer.
Ready to volunteer? Please fill out and return the portion below, or email Emily Ross, Club Manager, directly at1955 Pauline Blvd, Ste. 200, Ann Arbor, MI 48104, c/o Emily.
