Enduring icons of alternative country rock
Rooted in country and blues styles, the world-famous Cowboy Junkies sound just like what the name suggests: you can identify the band that's playing their languid, darkly seductive music after hearing just a few notes. Cowboy Junkies are more than 20 years old and going strong, and they recently finished a cycle of four albums completed over just 18 months. The latest, "The Wilderness," sees the band taking the long view without losing their atmospheric bluesy sound. "These idle tales we need to keep us going, these tales are for our children," they sing. Writes Fred Thomas of AllMusic: "Topics like parenthood and getting older come up more than late-twenties existential ennui, but are addressed with the same lost, wandering uncertainty that characterized the band's earlier work."
