“One of the best collections of traditional songs I‘ve ever heard”--Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2
The Vermont songwriter Anais Mitchell keeps coming up with something new! In the past she's written a folk opera based on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, released a unique concept album, and more. Now she comes to The Ark with a new album, "Child Ballads," which she recorded with friend and collaborator Jefferson Hamer. She appears with him at tonight's show. It’s a collection of traditional songs from the British Isles, named after their collector, Francis James Child. These new versions versions have been carefully re-imagined to reflect an American sensibility as well as a deep respect for the tradition. With old-time music coming on strong these days, you can count on Anais Mitchell to put a distinctive personal stamp on the trend. Acoustic Americana duo Mike & Ruthy (Ruth Ungar & Mike Merenda) open the concert.
