"Legends of country-folk-rock"
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came together as a jug band in 1966, say the members, because they were trying to figure out a way not to have to work for a living. Almost 45 years later, with original members John McEuen, Jeff Hanna, and Jimmie Fadden still on board, they remain one of the hardest-working bands in show business. They had an evergreen hit with Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" in 1970, moved to Nashville, and reunited several generations of country musicians on the classic three-LP set "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." They went on to mainstream country success with a series of albums in the 1970s and 1980s that were wonderfully songwriter-oriented (request their version of Steve Goodman's "Don't Get Sand in It" if you get a chance), and took home a Country Music Association Album of the Year award for "Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume Two" in 1989. They've remained one of country's great attractions in concert ever since, and they're making a rare Michigan appearance in support of their new release, "Speed of Life," featuring 11 original songs plus covers of "Going Up the Country" and "Stuck in the Middle with You."
