"Legends of folk rock"

The 2009 incarnation of the great folk-rock band Steeleye Span finds Maddy Prior -- the rich contralto voice of Steeleye Span for 34 years, and a recent inductee of the Order of the British Empire -- back at the helm of a lineup featuring band stalwart and fiddler extraordinaire Peter Knight, Maddy's husband Rick Kemp on bass, Ken Nicol (the Albion Band) on guitar and vocals, and Liam Genockey on the drum stool. Steeleye Span is coming to Michigan with a new album, "Live in the Distance," marking their 40th anniversary as a band. A traditional English ballad about a fight between John "Steeleye" Span and John Bowlin gave its name to the band, that, along with Fairport Convention, invented folk rock as we know it today. Four decades and various lineup changes later, Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior remain folk-rock favorites. Opening this evening's show is Cara Dillon.
