"Country and Eastern!"

The Ann Arbor band Orpheum Bell fell together as its members were combing through country and folk rhythms, instrumental waltzes, and Gypsy melodies. The mixture they came up with The band's sound is focused on the intoxicating vocals of Merrill Hodnefeld, accordion, guitar, and double bass, with additional texture and luster spreading from violins (including the addictively weird Stroh violin), clarinet, percussion, and an autoharp. Orpheum Bell has been called "some sort of eclectic von Trapp Family pounding out raw country and gypsy waltzes at the last bar on the outskirts of town." With more than a bit of Tom Waits's instinct for turning half-forgotten music into something absolutely modern, Orpheum Bell something new and different in Michigan music--and American music. They come to The Ark during the process of working on their eagerly awaited second CD.
