"Up close and personal!"
Sam Phillips arrives at The Ark hot on the heels of her brand new album, "Don't Do Anything." Phillips is a wonder! Her Beatlesque songcraft and the integrity of her artistic vision are matched by her understated but compelling live performances. "Don't Do Anything" is Phillips's first self-produced album after years of collaboration with ex-husband T-Bone Burnett. Full of sparse, dark electric textures it's her "breakup album," to an extent, but, in the words of Mark Deming of the All Music Guide, "nearly all the songs on 'Don't Do Anything' work on two levels, as they express misgivings of affairs of the heart as well as the uncertain navigation of the soul." The rock concert of the season in Ann Arbor, this evening with Sam Phillips is a rare up-close opportunity to experience the restless spirituality of one of the great songwriters of our time.
