"In search of the African banjo"
Canadian-born, Boulder-based banjoist Jayme Stone has studied with Bela Fleck and Tony Trischka. He's been hailed for his fresh fusions of jazz and bluegrass, but he recently advanced to a new stage of musical fusion: he traveled to Bamako, Mali, sat in with Toumani Diabate's fabled Symmetric Orchestra, explored the banjo's African roots, and began an incredible collaboration with Malian griot and kora player Mansa Sissoko. One result of the collaboration has been their new album, "Africa to Appalachia," featuring top guest stars on both the African (ngoni lute wizard Bassekou Kouyate, Guinean griot Katenen Dioubate) and Appalachian (fiddler Casey Driessen) sides. Now the two musicians are on tour, exploring the deep resonances of the banjo in our collective psyche. It's a new musical experience not to be missed!
