"A major new phenomenon in British folk music"
This band from North-East England includes sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, who have been going to and performing at folk clubs and festivals for as long as they can remember. They grew up around the impassioned, bawdy harmony singing of male North East bands, and they put the abandon of that music into a mix that's all their own, with elements of blues, jazz, burlesque cabaret, classical, and left-field contemporary music. Last year Rachel Unthank & The Winterset released their album "The Bairns," which the Observer Music Magazine called "music as tough as it is gentle, as ancient as it is modern, and as coldly desolate as it is achingly intimate." The album landed on folk best-of-the-year lists all over Britain--and also that of the website allaboutjazz.com. Rachel Unthank & The Winterset are a major new phenomenon in British folk, making music that's fearless, peerless, and wholeheartedly brave!
