Formed while its members were still students at the University of North Carolina, his Asheville, North Carolina quintet snagged Emerging Artist of the Year honors at the 2006 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards and has been bowling audiences over at top bluegrass venues ever since. They come to The Ark fresh from an appearance at the tastemaking Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The Steep Canyon Rangers are notable for their virtually all-original songs and albums--not since Jim Lauderdale (who has the same knack for distilling a variety of influences down to a basic bluegrass song) has anyone found room for fresh thinking in pure traditional sounds the way these young North Carolinians have. Put it all together with top-notch musicianship, and the result is an exciting new band that's already reached the top levels of American acoustic music.
