"Cutting edge Americana"
In her early 20s, Abigail Washburn lived in the Chinese city of Chengdu. After coming home she heard Doc Watson play "Shady Grove" and immersed herself in American traditional music. A member of the all-girl old-time group Uncle Earl (and doubtless the spark behind their notorious Kung Fu Clogging video), Abigail has made a real splash with her fusions of bluegrass and Chinese music. She's taken her music to a compelling new level with the Sparrow Quartet--clawhammer banjo, three-finger banjo, fiddle, and cello. It's an all-star group featuring fabulous instrumentalists Ben Sollee, Casey Driessen, and legendary newgrass innovator Bela Fleck! Among the Sparrow Quartet's dates this last summer were one at Bonnaroo and another at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Tennessean in Nashville calls Abigail Washburn the "artist who best embodies the notion of Americana as a worldwide musical language.”
