"No-cost new Michigan sounds"

Fox on a Hill is a Petoskey-based group of artists, musicians, filmmakers, and business leaders who work "to discover, support, and distribute works by community-minded and independent artists" in Northwest Lower Michigan and beyond--a sign that the vigorous grassroots musical activity in the region is growing into something bigger. Take this no-cost opportunity to check out some of their new musical offerings! Cadillac-born singer-songwriter Luke Winslow-King has had a musical education ranging from Interlochen to the streets of New Orleans, a stint at the Charles University in Prague, and studies with local avant-garde composer "Blue Gene" Tyranny. His simultaneously rustic and elegant sound draws on ragtime, impressionism, Delta blues, and folk influences. Rising Lansing singer-songwriter Jen Sygit (rhymes with "dig it") has gained airplay on Ann Arbor's 107.1 FM with a pleasantly bluesy sound that carries forward influences from Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, and Lucinda Williams. East Jordan, Michigan's Breathe Owl Breathe is a trio (sometimes a duo) with roots in indie, classical, and traditional music. They play original songs that combine vocals, guitar, banjo, and classical-styled cello from Colombian-born, Ann Arbor-educated Andrea Moreno-Beals. "At last, some music in the folk tradition that is new and refreshing, something an old music critic like me is always looking to find," says All Music Guide founder Michael Erlewine.
