"A local treasure of African music"
Biza Sompa began his choreography career in 1970 with the Ballet Damar and the Congololese National Dance Company in Brazzaville, Congo. He toured extensively throughout France, Belgium and Germany with Ballet-Theatre Kodia and the Ballet Lemba, Congolese dance troupes based in Paris. Teaching African dance at the U-M and EMU, he formed the Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater, bringing vital, kaleidoscopic dance concerts and workshops to community and school events all over southeast Michigan and beyond. The members of Bichini Bia Congo are trained in the technical and aesthetic elements of Congolese dancing, singing, instrumentation, and drumming. If you think every town has a company like Bichini Bia Congo, think again!
