"'A lifelong searcher'--No Depression"
Singer-songwriter Matthew Ryan was born into an Irish family in Chester, Pennsylvania--"a city," he says, "of row homes, corner bars, refineries, government housing, and beautiful, almost gothic, stone churches." Now based in Nashville, he has released 11 albums. He has shared stages with and made fans of such figures as Lucinda Williams, Josh Rouse, Kasey Chambers, and Mark Knopfler. His new album (and band), "Matthew Ryan vs. the Silver State," or MRVSS, was recorded live with few embellishments and even fewer edits. Throughout the 11 songs on his new release, Ryan explores (even implores, he says) that universal but mysterious question: how do we become who we are? This working-class songwriting hero has drawn comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, and he can stand up to them, too.
