"The quintessence of soul!"
Virginia-born brothers Wendell and Sherman Holmes, along with drummer and master falsettist Popsy Dixon, distill modern African American music down to its essentials of blues, soul, and gospel. The current Holmes Brothers album, "State of Grace," features unique versions of songs by John Fogerty ("Bad Moon Rising"), Hank Williams Sr. ("I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You"), Nick Lowe ("What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love And Understanding?"), and Lyle Lovett ("God Will"), but the brothers are all fabulous original songwriters as well. There's a lot of gospel in the soaring harmonies and heartfelt idealism of the Holmes Brothers--but a lot of the roadhouse as well. As Wendell says about their blend of the secular and the sacred, “Jesus turned water into wine, not wine into water.”
