"A hip and hypnotic percussion sound"
A one-man band like no other you've ever heard, Vinx played his first gig with Taj Mahal. Since then, such artists as Sting, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, Branford Marsalis, Rickie Lee Jones, and Sheryl Crow have clamored to work with him. Vinx does it all with a single drum that in his hands transcends language, crosses borders, and encompasses a whole collection of African-derived rhythms. His silky voice rides atop contemporary urban beats, Afro-Brazilian pop, bluesy swing, and more, and he shapes unique original songs and sparse arrangements into a listening experience that's both focused and luxurious. Vinx promises the imminent appearance of a new CD, "50 memoirs of a hip old black man." Opening this evening is Yen. Born in Vietnam and raised in Michigan, Yen (pronounced Ian) was the youngest of ten children. He had to find his voice. And when he openend his mouth, no one could believe what came out. The local beat - Motown - had taken root inside his tiny frame. He's amazed crowds ever since.
